The slogan on the window

"Save Sodomy from Ulster"
It celebrates inclusivity apparently and is the Lord Mayor's proudest moment as the city's Mayor.

@TooBigForMyBoots
it was discussed in bbc radio Ulster yesterday and there was a heated argument between Mal O’hara and a Dup counsellor (Sammy someone).

Some DUPers still believe that homosexuality is an abomination and like to attach it to paedophilia.Hmm They are the homophobic bigots who wanted to keep homosexuality a crime. They lost.

The gay people of NI won their legal rights and protections. That's what this window is celebrating.

Oh we discuss other things too, like Dr Who and the history of tarpaulin and supporting each other through family tragedies - and expressing opinions 😱 on pieces of public art like this one.

But when it comes to stuff like sex and gender, we stick to the facts, the scientifically-based, properly-reference, provable kind, and no amount of American Right Wing Christian millions will shift us from that.

And god knows they've tried - we all live in huge mansions with uterus-shaped swimming pools and have more $$$$s than we know what to do with, in Swiss bank accounts and/or cryptocurrency, but nope, when it comes to the important stuff, we still stubbornly believe in facts Smile

What, like the fact that 2 of the biggest indices in the world examining women's equality with men and wellbeing show that 8 out of top ten countries in each have policies of gender self ID and apparently "don't know what a woman is"?

Didn't think FWR liked that fact very much.

I think it's quite fitting. A stained glass window for the new civic religion.

Is equal rights for gay people a new civic religion now?

It's not about gay people. As we see on this thread, it's about those who adhere to the correct catechism.

The new LGBTQ+ religion. Nothing to do with gay rights.

Nope, I don't remember any valid explanations in the face of this overwhelming big picture.

Yes the 'phobia word will be dragged out yet again, as if anybody cared. Imagine a.different slogan - an explicit heterosexual one being put in the window instead. It would be condemned as gross and offensive. People would.definitely not take children to see it or have it explained to them. Why does a.child have to know what sodomy is?

I will have no problem explaining this to my 7yo DC. Context is everything. Save Ulster from Sodomy was a despicable campaign that demonised and terrorised our gay community. There are still people today who demonise and terrorise our gay community. Who brand them "unnatural", "unhealthy" and "deviant" because they have a very natural attraction to those of the same sex.

The fight for gay rights should be celebrated. From decriminalisation to same sex marriage. These rights were not simply given, they were hard fought and won.

And yes I do consider those who'd wish to damage it, homophobic. Because they are. They were homophobes before this window existed.

It's about a stained glass window, documenting a part of our history (often overlooked) in Belfast City Hall.

Force teaming it with today's TRA nonsense is offensive and ignorant.

Looked on Nitter but i couldnt find much. 1 post saying the mayor is responsible for the window. He isn't. Another saying the window is in a church. It isn't. And a third complaining about Sorcha Eastwood.

Nothing about FOI requests from NI rate payers.

X is not real life.

Edited

X isn’t real life you say? Thank you for pointing out that pearl of wisdom.

suggestionsplease1 · 24/05/2025 12:03

Why don't you go back and read my posts properly and you will see I am giving examples of how these tactics are practised.

Scold, scold, scold 😂

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/05/2025 13:45

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 23/05/2025 22:14

You might want to take a look at what the good rate paying people of Belfast are saying, and it’s not a ringing endorsement. He seems to have form for spending large sums on things that people don’t believe are necessary, the FOI requests are piling up!

Can you show me where the FOI requests are piling up?

Yet that's exactly what the Mayor has done. When he shut down replies his automatic response was to chant the mantra of TWAW.
It is forced teamed with it whether you like it or not.

The thing is I am not outraged.
Just sad.
Because this will lead to a rise in homophobia.
And yes, it is Paisley in another guise but you just can't see it.

Why do you think it will lead to increased homophobia?

I think most people who understand the origin will laugh.

Unfortunately your man has protected his tweets, which is laughable for a Mayor of a major city.

MimiGC · 24/05/2025 13:55

I know people are picking up on the sodomy slogan, but what does U=U mean? And why does it say No.4 at the top? Or JustBooks further down? Do these mean something in NI that others don’t recognise?

My personal favourite was the one about anal sex being disgusting and people might associate it with gay men and then understandably be prejudiced against them 😂

U=U means undetectable and untransmittable.. No idea about the others.

Just Books was the anarchist bookshop where people would meet back in the day. I've a feeling it still exists today as a nebulous "collective" that pops up from time to time in the absence of a steady premises.

I always remember it as being a bit of a dump, but some folks are sentimental about its memory.
