The slogan on the window

"Save Sodomy from Ulster"
It celebrates inclusivity apparently and is the Lord Mayor's proudest moment as the city's Mayor.

Is that a Belfast organisation?

The argument over Proposition 8 was almost 20 years ago, and on the other side of the world, but apparently powerful enough to bend the space-time continuum and make people in present day Belfast speak hateful fascist dogwhistles like "yon window is a bit garish".

ArabellaScott · 24/05/2025 10:38

I can't see the actual window, the X post has gone

suggestionsplease1 · 24/05/2025 10:40

NOM are based in the States.

Not that it really matters; apparently people on the other side of the world now can post on UK sites and forums too, who knew, eh?!! 🤔

And of course money can travel outside its country of origin too:

That's about funding religious conservatism, which is about as far from our commitment to women's and lesbian rights as you can get!

Honestly, I think you're worrying too much about us, we 'know our own know', and it would take more than a bunch of US Far Right Conservatives to divert us from the kind of well-researched, fact-based, carefully-thought-through objective opinions we favour on FWR.

There's a guy who sits on the Washington DC city council who firmly believes that the Jews are controlling the weather. He's a black Democrat, so the media don't cover him much.

Andrew Copson has been flogging this story about shady American money creating a powerful Christian far right network of influence in the UK for many years.

I rate Copson's credibility on this about as highly as the weather guy - he doesn't really have anything except speculation, insinuation and stereotypes, and even it if were true, they aren't doing a very good job of it.

But I suppose Copson has to raise alarms to keep the donations coming.

PriOn1 · 24/05/2025 10:58

He also said you were trying to make gay people invisible when you quite clearly stated that you felt people’s sexuality should be irrelevant.

Irrelevant is very different from invisible. One implies lack of prejudice, the other implies the exact opposite.

Twisting words and pretending people said things they didn’t, in order to bully them, has always been a transactivist tactic as well as a narcissistic behaviour pattern.

Okay?! What are you actually on about?

Have you any idea how weird you are coming across?

NotDavidTennant · 24/05/2025 11:27

I think it's quite fitting. A stained glass window for the new civic religion.

Which is exactly what Jolyon Maugham does, increases the hyperbole and hysteria in order to keep his grift going. I can’t believe that the gullible people who donate to him can’t see that he almost always loses.

One minute we're American Christofascists engaged in a deadly holy war against all the gays, the next it's just some wee wimmin moaning about a window.

Pick a lane.

(I still haven't seen the fecking window. Or had my promised funding from the dark right web. )

Once you’re as far as this down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories there’s no reason to be found.

You asked if NOM were Belfast based and my response was no plus...it doesn't really matter where an organisation is based geographically, as influence can extend internationally.

🤷‍♀️ What's weird about acknowledging that people who are very motivated on matters will try to influence on these areas abroad as they do at home?

How strange and naive of you not to be aware of this.

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/05/2025 11:40

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 24/05/2025 06:56

It’s all over X, he said he’s had to close the comments due to the homophobia. I just saw people saying it’s awful or a waste of money, no homophobia.

I’m not on X but you can find it all on nitter.net.

Looked on Nitter but i couldnt find much. 1 post saying the mayor is responsible for the window. He isn't. Another saying the window is in a church. It isn't. And a third complaining about Sorcha Eastwood.

Nothing about FOI requests from NI rate payers.

X is not real life.

ArabellaScott · 24/05/2025 11:52

So you're saying this NOM organisation is agitating against this window?

Why don't you go back and read my posts properly and you will see I am giving examples of how these tactics are practised.

hedgerunner · 24/05/2025 12:19

@TooBigForMyBoots
it was discussed in bbc radio Ulster yesterday and there was a heated argument between Mal O’hara and a Dup counsellor (Sammy someone).

Oh we discuss other things too, like Dr Who and the history of tarpaulin and supporting each other through family tragedies - and expressing opinions 😱 on pieces of public art like this one.

But when it comes to stuff like sex and gender, we stick to the facts, the scientifically-based, properly-reference, provable kind, and no amount of American Right Wing Christian millions will shift us from that.

And god knows they've tried - we all live in huge mansions with uterus-shaped swimming pools and have more $$$$s than we know what to do with, in Swiss bank accounts and/or cryptocurrency, but nope, when it comes to the important stuff, we still stubbornly believe in facts Smile

ArabellaScott · 24/05/2025 12:42

History of tarpaulin?! I missed that!

SionnachRuadh · 24/05/2025 12:44

I very clearly remember the murder of David Templeton in 1997. It happened not far from me.

I mention this for the benefit of anyone who's indulging in now more than ever finger-wagging.

We know who killed David. It was members of the UVF. Nothing whatsoever to do with women here, or JKR, or American Christians, or Putin, or whoever this week's bogeyman is.

Nobody has ever been brought to justice for David's murder. That's not unknown in NI.

I'd really like to see a memorial to David. People should remember him. I'd be very happy to contribute.

But I don't think that's the sort of thing that Belfast's rainbow dildo community and their representatives on the council are interested in.

elgreco · 24/05/2025 12:49

That article is completely irrelevant. I mean good luck finding Hispanics to aggitate against the gay community in NI.
