Welcome all. The booze here is minimally intoxicating, the food is calorie free and the staff are warm and cuddly. And if the thread title sounds nonsensical, blame the guy Myrtle was listening to this evening!

Thanks @MarieDeGournay . I do feel like I’ve been a bit of a killjoy now. I didn’t mean to be.

Happily, I didn’t get the sense that there had been any human harm in the woods. More that they were deeply examining the vehicle by removing its parts. Maybe looking for a stash of something. If I hear anything I’ll be sure to let you know. (A quick search of the village FB page has revealed nothing yet.)

I am having my first glass of wine of the week, as have been abstaining. Feeling an odd mix of virtuous and sinful 🤣.

That dormouse is so sweet. Although I'm not sure anyone who knows me would see me as mouse like 😂

I’ve just checked….dormice aren’t, it seems, actually mice.

Bugger! I've just realised I posted on a new thread as Boiledmuppet!

I'm literally a fucking muppet!!!

FlowerUser · 16/05/2025 22:12

And flower, I'm so sorry your job hunting is being so shit. The endless deflation gets so wearing. Should we send Rosy over?

Yes, please Edith. Thank you xx

It’s been over six months with just a first interview for one job and one final interview and down to the last two (out of 400) for another.

I will out in another two applications next week, then I’m on holiday. Then I’m likely to have my surgery. I’m not too bothered by that any more as 6-8 weeks in a cast and then the same in a boot is like giving three months notice. I just hope I can get there in person if a I get an interview.

Things move fast here! I didn't get a change to express my envy at Errol seeing not one but three of those strange aircraft!
And to extend a warm welcome to MrsO, I too have seen and appreciated your posts elsewhere, and it's great to have you here.

MarieDeGournay · 16/05/2025 23:00

I googled the Bell V-22 Osprey - it looks very oldfashioned so I was surprised to read that it's very recent, so recent in fact that they haven't got the gearbox working properly yet and it hasn't been able to fly without restrictions since one of them crashed because of a gear problem.

What an obscure piece of info, but obscure is good in the Bluestocking, n'est-ce pas?

lcakethereforeIam · 16/05/2025 23:30

I thought they'd been grounded. Perhaps they've been fixed. Or my recollection is faulty.

No, you're right, and you're right - they were faulty, they were grounded, and they're not 100% sure they've fixed them yet

FlowerUser · 17/05/2025 00:01

There has been a problem with a particular helicopter that when it crashes it completely breaks the landing runners. Shears them off. It’s really expensive and it’s a design flaw. So they trained the pilots not to crash them.

At least that’s what my friend who works in air accidents (she is awesome), told me about 10 years ago and I’ve never followed up.

I suspect she was being facetious.

DeanElderberry · 17/05/2025 07:55

Good morning!

That link to the Overton dormouse held unexpected trauma because the picture of nuts nibbled by different beasts included an image of the depradations wreaked by dear little VOLES. The shady side of the vegetable bed I've been clearing is carpeted with cherry stones the cute little furry blighters have perforated. Maybe I need a wol.

That said, it's delightful that Mrs Overton has arrived. I'm sure she wouldn't eat anyone's tulip bulbs.

Dormice have had the Irish ecologists in a bit of a tizz - they aren't native, but some arrived a few years ago and settled in comfortably. Non-native, but endangered elsewhere, don't seem to be displacing anything already here, and so cute. So nobody seems to be making any alarmist noises about them. Which really, since the white-toothed shrews and those bloody voles seem unstoppable, is just as well.

I'm hungry. Omelette for breakfast I think.

Boiledbeetle · 17/05/2025 09:23

Look into my eyes... look into my eyes... you are feeling sleepy... you haven't just fed me... you want to replace the Felix with Gourmet... you haven't just fed me

Wouldn't want to support the suggestion that the Bluestocking is where people come while they neglect their cats but

ps, what is this 'making the bed' that I've read about?

<preens> I managed to make mine this morning! I beat the cat back up the stairs, so he sat waiting for me (with a hurry up wench look on his face) to finish straightening the duvet and plumping the pillows before he sat on it to wash his arse!

Good job I love the furry buggers!

DeanElderberry · 17/05/2025 09:41

Right, I'm off to the cat food shop.

I briefly read this as you were preening because you had managed to train your lovely cat to make the bed, unlike Deano's!Confused
Instead, it looks like you've just managed to fit in some essential housework without inconveniencing the Lord and Master of the house toooo much, so he'll graciously tolerate you for another whileGrin

Your black cats with otherworldly green eyes are so beautiful, I love seeing photos of them thank you.

But of course everybody's cats are all beautiful, whatever their colour [quick piece of Fr Ted diplomacy there!]

MarieDeGournay · 17/05/2025 11:16

Because I can't hear properly, it took me ages to work out what the cats were saying in this TV ad - even with my hearing aids, a combination of background sound and accents made it difficult, but I eventually worked it out and I think it's very funny
'Nice hat!'.
Don't. Just don't'😄

FuzzyPuffling · 17/05/2025 11:20

I love that advert. I want it on my telly!

Does anyone remember the " cats with opposable thumbs" ad? No idea what it was for, but very memorable for the cats!

I don't remember the opposable thumbs one - it would be great if you could find it.

Irish TV ads tend to be very very funny, and well scripted and acted, some of them are little gems of ensemble acting - that said, I often remember the acting and not the product or the brand, so they are complete failures as ads.
I managed to find this though I couldn't remember if it was for Aldi or Lidl!

Just the 'Aoife!' 'Saoirse!' exchange is enough to make me laugh, and I love the woman in the background with the popcorn and eyeroll😄
