Lost trust in the media

I feel the transgender issue has had a big effect on how i feel about the media.

Like the Guardian reporting on Wi-Spa. I used to like the Guardian but dont look at it anymore.

And every newspaper, TV channel using female pronouns for male rapists etc.

There’s an agenda being rammed down people’s throats.

It also makes me question other issues that are reported. I used to be more trusting.

Oh I must have used a word 😆

Online money words clearly banned!

MN auto-hides words that are often associated with scams, but posts that reference them in good faith go through once they have been checked.

And yes, I think people underestimate how popular online money is - something like 30% of US citizens hold it now.

On Women's Hour right now: Lambrini Girls (a punk duo) supposedly feminist "what do you do to make sure that space is safe for women, don't just talk the talk, make this a safe space, being Woman's Hour, by showing solidarity to any transwomen listening because they may not FEEL SAFE to be in this space"

Only slightly paraphrased, could not catch exact wording obviously. FFS

CorruptedCauldron · 19/02/2025 11:13

They can’t advocate for women. Look up the lyrics to their Terf Wars song. Don’t bother looking on YouTube as they don’t deserve the clicks. But those lyrics? Misogyny in its rawest, purest form.

Edited as I meant to quote you @HesSoBadHesGood

Yes, I listened to that....a total logical disconnect between everything they were saying about being women, and on the otherhand feeling the need to prioritise men in women's spaces - in order to feel they're really radical and progressive.
Really strange!

Of course, Nuala would never dream of unpicking this contradiction in their thinking or confronting them with it.

Oh dear!

You think you can get away
With shitting on other women
In upcale cafes
Justify your hate
With an Oxford education
Gender neutral toilets
are not the problem
This is not your space
Because this space belongs to all women
You're not a femmenist
Your a stain on this earth
Shut your stupid fucking mouth
You stupid fucking terf
With a head so far up your arse
You can escape the blame
Because you're upper class
Screaming your savourism
In marks and Spencer's
Appropriating femmenism
At your own volition
This is not your space
Because this space belongs to all women
You're not a femmenist
Your a stain on this earth
Shut your stupid fucking mouth
You stupid fucking terf
Absolving yourself
of guilt
As a self appointed martyr
You fucking narcissist
Harbouring resentment
With your warped tunnel vision
Gaslight girlboss gatekeeping
Their whole existence
It's not your space, this space belongs to all women
Shut your stupid fucking mouth you stupid fucking terf
Shut your stupid fucking mouth you stupid fucking terf
Shut your stupid fucking mouth you stupid fucking terf
Shut your stupid fucking mouth you stupid fucking terf
There's a reason your kids
aren't returning your calls carol
It's because you're being transphobic on Facebook again
Just have a fucking day off

I used to be an admirer of both BBC and Channel 4 news, but these days I just see how utterly captured and biased they are. Everything is slanted in order to manipulate public opinion in one way or another; usually in the direction of a 'progressive' left wing take on most issues. I don't trust BBC verify, either. I find myself turning off after a few minutes, and never watch Channel 4 news at all anymore.

OMG, I didn't know of them and I thought they were just guilty of not thinking things through...

Your a stain on this earth
Shut your stupid fucking mouth
You stupid fucking terf

This is who BBC Women's Hour happily platforms.

ExtraordinaryMachine1 · 19/02/2025 11:51

Totally agree, OP. For me, I started to lose faith around the time of the Brexit referendum. I used to listen to a lot of Radio 4, but I just got so cross that they were getting on speakers on either side of the political divide "for balance" but journalists were then failing to ask proper questions! And then, a couple of years ago when my friend told me about what was happening in women's rights, I started to think the same - why are the journalists just not asking questions??
You had one job!
It's not that I wanted to see my point of view reflected in the media. I just wanted to hear the questions asked, to find out what I think. Asking questions isn't a value judgement, it's a healthy part of democratic society.

Sorry, was writing while the Woman's Hour lyrics were being posted. My goodness, that is horrible stuff. Wherever are we going, I don't understand the modern world any more.

They talk about hate and anger.........and wanting to feel 'safe' and then create lyrics like that.

HesSoBadHesGood · 19/02/2025 11:56

Of course, Nuala would never dream of unpicking this contradiction in their thinking or confronting them with it.

Quite right Shortshrift instead she faltered out a statement about 'strong feelings, both sides, er airing opinions. And then moved swiftly on.

ExtraordinaryMachine1 · 19/02/2025 11:57

Yes @Shortshriftandlethal language is all up for grabs, isn't it? "Safe" doesn't mean what I thought it did. I feel like a permanent Inigo Montoya: "You keep using that word. I do not think that it means what you think it means."

HesSoBadHesGood · 19/02/2025 11:59

And how do you not feel safe on Women's Hour for crying out loud??

Our opinion is violence. And their hate and anger is simply being reasonable and OTRSOH, of course.

CorruptedCauldron · 19/02/2025 12:00

Meanwhile as far as I can see, the Guardian has still not reported on the Fife / Peggie case! There was the excellent Sonia Sodha Observer comment piece but why wouldn’t the Guardian cover the actual story? It’s unusual to publish commentary on something that hasn’t been done as a news story. It reminds me of the little one-paragraph review they did of the Tortoise podcast on Neil Gaiman. It was just sneaked in there without any previous stories having been published about the sexual assault allegations. They sat on it for months until there was no longer any way of hiding from the story.

Having kept a close eye on the Peggie forums here and the live Tribunal Tweets, I have been staggered by some of the headlines that have emerged. Probably the most shocking was the Independent, putting “nurse admits harassment” in their headline! So dishonest and misleading. Court reporting needs to be fair, balanced and accurate. This case served up killer headlines on a plate. Male doctor insists he’s a biological woman, for starters. I put on my big girl pants. These headlines are gifts. Yet while some papers used them, the BBC went with bland headlines like the very reasonable “I’m only asking for basic respect” quote, or “Trans doctor had the ‘right’ to use women’s room”. If made me think, have we been following the same case? That was your takeaway from it, Beeb?

I don’t trust the media anymore, and I used to love both the BBC and the Guardian.

ExtraordinaryMachine1 · 19/02/2025 12:06

Quite. What happened to reporting facts?

Back to the Woman's Hour lyrics: what happened to doing even the tiniest bit of research on guests? I mean, it surely must not have come as a shock to everyone on the production team.

These are basic journalistic standards: ask questions, research your guests before you invite them on. It's not rocket science.

CorruptedCauldron · 19/02/2025 12:10

Indeed - it’s not hard to find those lyrics. Interesting how their imagined terf is an upper class Oxford-educated M&S-loving mum called Carol.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/02/2025 12:11

The entire song is basically "waaaaah I hate mummy".

'Safe' seems to mean being protected or shielded from views that you are not supposed to approve of; or even from material reality itself.

SernieBanders · 19/02/2025 12:23

I’ve personally stopped reading MSM. I can’t trust the left where I naturally sit and I’m mostly not right wing, where they are more honest about trans issues.

I end up on the critic, unherd, places like that instead

Adamante · 19/02/2025 12:35

There’s a very leftist political ideology/project that has been hanging around in the fringes since the Second World War, but which really took off for the UK at around the time of the Blair government. Blair sent all the kids to uni, remember that relentless push to send 50% of all school leavers to uni? And Paxman asked him straight out to explain the symbolic figure of 50%, because he knew why. So they all got indoctrinated as was the plan, and now they’re all out there disseminating the results and many of them work in media. That’s the base of it. However then the Tories got in and they also had a fair few members who had been taught The Right Way To Think at uni, and also generally saw that those ideas/values were popular and would be a way to stay in power for a really long time - Boris was by far the worst imvho. So they stopped being conservative and embraced the same political stance and in fact went even further and so here we are. The media are fully on board because they were all indoctrinated early on. All the working class journos died out and the middle class graduates remain in charge and all hold the same general political views around how society should look, apart from a few outliers, who usually get sacked or “go freelance”. Therefore every single thing they publish is influenced by pushing the agenda rather than telling the truth.

You cannot believe one thing they write, it’s all at the least slanted/biased, at the most completely ignored but you’ll be shamed, sneered at and called a conspiracy theorist for saying so. And we can also see the results of Blair’s indoctrination project right here on MN every day, which as a platform has a very high proportion of middle class women, of the right age, who went through uni as a result of Blair’s big push.
