Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why do all trans discussions end in a bun fight?

Name5 · 27/09/2024 18:53

I have a natal daughter who is a young adult. I try to keep an open dialogue with her as her thoughts are changing as she gets older.
She is not causing any discord to anyone. I try to help when desparate parents ask simple questions about their LGBTQ DC ( this week it was about getting a job). Within a few hours there are big fights re toilets and rape crisis centres. Yes these things are horrifying but every bloody thread gets high jacked with these points of law. There should be a subject category for parents of adult trans people. This would allow issues to be discussed without the OP being subjected to accusations of ideology or affirmation. I don't believe my DD is better as a male persona but I can't and won't bully her to accept my feelings override hers. She's still my DC and all subjects are open to reasonable and lawful discussion. MNHQ can you please list a new category so people don't feel attacked and bullied?

@pleatspleats so she's been told.
Cobblers to that. Ditto her interest in cars.

As a Japanese person that’s pretty insulting. I’m assuming it’s because Japan has been reduced to anime and video games in these people’s eyes. Which is also sexist obviously that only males could like such things…ugh my annoyance knows no bounds.

Au contraire. They make a lovely pet.

Absolutely cobblers to that. I did Japanese at school. It was a co-ed school but most of the class was female. How bizarre is that to think a language is considered a sexed interest?

Or is it an anime stereotype? Ie people perceive others learn it for anime? Seems very far fetched though.

Oops. Just saw pleats post and saw pleats’ question it too

Name5 · 28/09/2024 19:49

@Helleofabore sadly it is linked with anime in most people's minds. However my daughter had many different nationalities at her school and she made friends who she has kept in contact with.
She's more interested in the movie culture.

There is a subculture, perhaps you are already aware of it, called weeaboo (or weeb for short, weeb is used as an insult for people in this subculture), who are very into anime and manga etc, and who are very often male. It seems this subculture has claimed Japanese language learning as their own. No girls allowed. They do love their waifus though 🙄

PS - I have nothing against people who enjoy anime and manga in case it sounds like I’m slating that. It’s not all harem and improbably sized breasts.

Yes. I know it. Sadly…

What a world, eh?

Does a chicken have a gender identity? Does a chicken cry?

@Helleofabore its interesting that some view hobbies as male or female. My DD likes marvel, speaks Japanese and loves film. She is also a computer wizz. At boarding school she caused a rumpus for refusing basic cookery classes (my dad taught her to cook as a three year old, she didn't see the need to make scones! ) and she was sanctioned for wearing trousers. She quoted the equality act. She won on that one.
My DD has been lucky to have a large group of friends. All types. She speaks many languages and is intetested in people. She answers to both her birth name and her preferred name. Not everyone is a 'dick'.

That's not male traits though!

I was madly into SEGA games as an early teen. We used to go out riding our bikes, building rope swings and wooden bridges across ditches. Then I was football when I was 16/17. Then it was Indie bands. And anime and Pokémon. I travelled across the country going to gigs on my own, bumping into people I met online. (From the late 90s!). Then I travelled to the other side of the world for a year by myself. I wanted to play guitar but thought that girls playing guitars looked all wrong. Then it was online gaming. Even now I do thinks that other women just wouldn't. I have never fitted into that box. The idea of a girls spa weekend makes me shudder.

Did this make me male? No but my mother did a lot of psychological damage to me saying I should have been a boy. Seriously, stop reinforcing the idea that her interests are 'male interests'.

It's really really sad that girls today think that because they do things stereotypically gendered male think they have to assume their identity as male. Just how regressive is that? We've gone massively backwards not forward in 30 years.

It's thoroughly depressing that people think it's bigoted to say 'thats a load of bollocks' and to challenge gender stereotypes.

RedToothBrush · 28/09/2024 22:09

Just to add DH and I went to Japan before we married because we both desperately wanted to go due to a love of gaming and anime.

I find some of these comments about it being male actually really offensive tbh.

Why am I not supposed to like them?

Of course learning Japanese and living Anime and Manga is ridiculous and absurd to be considered a stereotype for either sex. However I have heard it said on a thread a long time ago, so sadly it is out there that some people think this.

It is all just bonkers!

Yep, I was a football obsessed teen in the 80s (oh and rugby and cricket and F1), a rock/indie music fan, a maths geek. I'm not a man, I've not got men's interests, I've got my interests and because I am woman they a woman's interests even if they aren't stereotypically women's interests.

WandsOut · 28/09/2024 22:19

>She is not causing any discord to anyone.

Actually for girls who have to share classes with gender distressed girls who are obsessed with discussing their pronouns, strapping their breasts down, fixating on themselves constantly and how they hate their bodies... it can be harmful.

Very harmful.

Name5 · 29/09/2024 07:44

@WandsOut my DD is not at school. She is in her twenties.
I don't disagree herd mentality can seep into schools but you haven't read the thread.

If I am going to employ a bird to lay eggs for me I am most definitely going to assume its sex, and if she starts assuming a gender identity and doing that crowing nonsense linked to upthread, steps will be taken. No affirmative actions. None. At all.

Helleofabore · 29/09/2024 08:11

My mum could accurately sex baby birds. Maybe she would be useful in your search for Dean

CocoapuffPuff · 29/09/2024 08:16

I'm so tired of the sexist crap about "this is for girls" and "this is for boys".
Are we fucking Victorians???

I remember the 70s when my mother could not withdraw cash from a joint bank account without my father's permission.

Are all the kids now really that stupid that they think going back to shit like that is desirable? Never has a generation put so much effort into achieving so little. I despair.

LongtailedTitmouse · 29/09/2024 09:04

Is she into Manga? There does seem to be a link between transactivists and the hypersexualised presentation of women and girls in manga. (Without even needing to consider Hentai)

I'd put money on it.

I have already answered the question. My DD was at boarding school with a Japanese girl.
My daughter also speaks French, Italian and a little Russian.
Please don't make assumptions based on your stereotypes.

Like I say you started this thread to start a fight.

Please can ask that posters stop trying to paint my DC as some sort of template trans person. It is hurtful and you don't know her or me.
PPs have tried to hint she is some sort of diviant.
The only two things she does is use a male name and wear mens clothes. Hardly a transactivist. She doesn't use sex based loos or push her thoughts on others.
