Several other sportsmen have withdrawn from women's competitions on discovering the truth.

And handed back their medals (voluntarily). And their records were cancelled.

Some people live the values of Rita Mae Brown's observation.

Sport strips away personality, letting the white bone of character shine through. Sport gives players an opportunity to know and test themselves.

Fantastic quote.

Sadly nothing as exciting as unicorns! Usually it's the foal's declared father (sire) coming back as not matching the DNA - so the wrong stallion has been used either deliberately or in error.

I also remember a case where the foal's mother came back as incorrect! When you return the foal DNA you also have to send a hair sample from the mother. What happened in this case was that 2 foals were born on the same night, the following day they and their mother's were turned out in a small nursery paddock together and the foals swapped mums! The two foals looked fairly alike, and were less than 24 hours old so the staff hadn't realised.

Since 2000 all Thoroughbreds in Britain/Ireland also get microchipped in the first week after birth so that when they go to the sales and the races they can be positively ID'd. You still get several cases every year where the wrong horse has been taken to the races and only identified when they are scanned in on arrival!

You mean the foals suckled the teats of a mare who was not their mother?

They swapped mums completely - went into the field with their birth mother and left the field with the other mare! By the time the error came to light the mares and foals were fully bonded so couldn't be separated until weaning.

Normally when a foal is born they spend the first few days alone with their mum to bond, but on this occasion the stud decided to put the two foals and their mums out together for a bit of company. It's the only case I've ever heard of, mares are normally very protective in the first few days so these two must just have been very chilled out!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/08/2024 13:52

I wondered if the Algeria NOC had been tipped off that all the IOC would require for Olympic eligibility was an F in the passport, hence withdrawing the CAS appeal?

Yes, all speculation of course, but very interesting.

I heard a trailer for Radio 4 Inside Science earlier (to be broadcast this afternoon). There will be a section on “the genetics of gold”. I bet it won’t be about genetic males getting gold in women’s boxing, though. If it’s not, I will email them to tell them they’ve missed a trick.

Poor things 😔

That's the first article I've seen in the Guardian.

This article was amended on 8 August 2024. Eleven members of the Israeli Olympic team (athletes and coaches) were killed in the Munich massacre, not two as an earlier version said.

Oh dear, that's a bit of a boo boo on the Guardian's part.

That Guardian piece is awful. Real 'back to square one' stuff.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/08/2024 16:11

on the basis of gender-based tests that the IOC has described as lacking credibilityy^.

This links to another article where the Guardian faithfully reports that the IOC say the tests are lacking in credibility. No actual elaboration, because of course the IOC haven't done any.

Repulsive lack of care over the details of the Munich massacre.

And an article chock full of spin. It makes me very cynical about the writer's background and motives.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/aug/08/paris-olympics-culture-wars-russia-west

I'm so depressed about this article which dismisses the idea that the two boxers are male as 'disinformation' which they attribute to a culture war spread by Russia. It is so clear what has happened in Olympic boxing yet so few people seem to be able to recognise it.

They've invited contributions to the Letters page, so let's hope readers take them up on it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/08/2024 16:17

It's a very lazy, by the numbers piece.

The Guardian is nothing more than an activist rag these days. It doesn't deserve the name of journalism.

RoyalCorgi · 08/08/2024 16:22

Look at this bit:

"I’m no expert on boxing regulations [NO SHIT], nor on the rules of the IOC [DITTO], but, as a martial artist myself, this much is clear [AH YES, THE WORD POLITICIANS USE WHEN THEY KNOW THEY'RE TALKING BOLLOCKS]: once both athletes had entered the ring, the time for contesting gender was over. [REALLY? WHAT ABOUT WHEN ONE OF THE ATHLETES IS INJURED? OR KILLED? ARE WE ALLOWED TO CONTEST 'GENDER' THEN OR ARE WE STILL EXPECTED TO SHUT UP ABOUT IT?]"

Still, knowing jack shit about fuck all has never been a barrier to writing an opinion piece on women's sports in the Guardian, as we saw just the other day when Barney Ronay demonstrated he couldn't count the number of male chromosomes (yes, that's one if anyone's interested).

lcakethereforeIam · 08/08/2024 16:24

They do, at least, mention DSDs. Even if it's just to breeze past them.

Is it just me or are crumbs getting really small these days? You have to hunt for them and they're rarely very comforting.

ChateauMargaux · 08/08/2024 16:24

I haven't seen any media report Kellie Harrington's XX gesture.... has anyone else?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/08/2024 16:24

Oh yes, sorry I'd blocked Ronay's idiotic piece from my mind.

But this is what the Guardian, bastion of journalistic integrity is up against....

'This is what we're up against
Bad actors spreading disinformation online to fuel intolerance.
Teams of lawyers from the rich and powerful trying to stop us publishing stories they don’t want you to see.
Lobby groups with opaque funding who are determined to undermine facts about the climate emergency and other established science.
Authoritarian states with no regard for the freedom of the press.'

They're the good guys peops😂

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/08/2024 16:26

It's weird that they take it as read that Khelif has a DSD, when I thought that was all just part of the "viral disinformation campaign" and the IBAs tests were "lacking in credibility". Can it be that they can see there is an issue by sight? Naughty!

When was that? I haven't seen it in any footage and can't find it reported either

lcakethereforeIam · 08/08/2024 16:31

On the now rare occasions that I go on the Guardian and that plea for money pops up I always wonder if the Foxphobe wrote it. It's very reminiscent of his hyperbole.
