I have never felt a punch like this’ – Carini

Words fail I'm so angry, but by god she is brave.
Personally I feel sick and 'triggered' it reminds me of the first time an ex punched me on the thigh, I couldnt get over how much it hurt or the enormous bruise from knee to hip. I know there is a general thread on this but its so important it deserves multiple threads. I hope Carinis decision to stop the fight so very publicly makes a difference.
Meanwhile Khelif crows “I am here for gold,” “I will fight anybody, I will fight them all.”
Not the REMOTEST hint of sportsmanlike conduct.
I vote we write to VIiner en masse and lay some responsibility at her feet.
Actually EVERY editor, The Indy NYT WAPO etc
I am incandescent

@sadabouti - i would say that males have the SRY gene on the Y chromosome and the receptors to respond to the androgens that are created in response to that.

And you would be wrong. You're basically like a flat earther.

ChildlessCatLadiesRuleOK · 01/08/2024 17:59

I haven't seen the fight, but nobody has to participate in a 'sport' that basically consists of people hitting each other.

You could say the same, that no one has to participate, about rugby or any other contact sport.

When people do participate, they have a reasonable expectation of sporting fairness and safety within the parameters of the sport. Setting women to compete against men in full-contact sports is neither fair nor safe.

In a world where women do sport a lot less than men, endorsing unfairness that will discourage female participation is misogyny.

Grammarnut · 01/08/2024 22:57

ChildlessCatLadiesRuleOK · 01/08/2024 18:04

I'm a woman who finds boxing barbaric. I don't think the participants are best placed to complain if it turns out to be more barbaric than they expected.

It's a sport. Indeed they choose to participate. But they do so on the understanding that the rules are followed. One of the rules is that people with XY chromosomes don't fight people with XX chromosomes because that is too dangerous - and this has not only happened in boxing, but also rugby (which is a contact sport where people get stomped on).

I completely agree that they are male.

I can’t seem to find where the information is that says they have XY chromosomes ?

I’ve seen multiple sources say they were born female with XX chromosomes though so I’m genuinely confused.

Male = XY.
Here is the statement from the IBA saying that they tested both boxers and found they had XY chromosomes, ie they were male.

And here is the explanation from the media outlet that broke the story initially.

Statement made by the International Boxing Association regarding Athletes Disqualifications in World Boxing Championships 2023

Lets cut to the chase. Man knows that he is a man and is enabled by the IOC to give a woman a good smacking. So he gives that woman a good smacking and walks away feeling good about himself.

The IOC. International enablers of VAWG.

sadabouti · 01/08/2024 23:00

@TempestTost You are now saying that intersex conditions are equivalent to disabilities. If that's the case, then it's a category for male competition in the Paralympics isn't it, to provide a fair competition between people with these disabilities. It wouldn't be a basis to ruin the woman's category to give them a winning edge would it.

1apenny2apenny · 01/08/2024 23:01

Carinis is a brave woman, I am so angry and upset for her and the other female competitors.

I am disgusted by the IOC and today's press conference with Mark Adams showed their lack of respect for women and women's sports.

He made a point of saying that this is not about trans individuals. This was a message imo. It's obvious that they know that if they accept the tests that show these 2 boxers are male they will have to do the same for transwomen. His comment about passports indicates that we will start to see more transwoman competing next time, passport I hand no doubt. Unless something is done this is the end of women's sport.

UpThePankhurst · 01/08/2024 18:39

I watched that woman collapse to her knees and cry, and I cried too.

And there's still people more concerned about the man's feelings and needs than about the woman whose nose he broke, and who as world class, highly experienced Olympic standard woman boxer had to make the decision to throw the match in under a minute because he was so dangerous.

there's still people more concerned about the man's feelings and needs

These aren't needs. They are wants.

similarminimer · 01/08/2024 23:02

@sadabouti 'You're basically like a flat earther.' 😂. That's a first for me - how so?

Because you believe something demonstrably false, because it suits your world view, rejecting observable scientific facts. People with XY chromosomes are men and never women.

In a nutshell right here.

TempestTost · 01/08/2024 22:52

No, not at all.

Would you think it was fair to put a guy in a wheelchair in the mend 1000m?

No one with CAIS could compete in elite male sport. In a boxing match it would be as unfair and dangerous as what we just saw.

Then it's male Paralympic sport if they want to campaign for it and the numbers make it worthwhile.

MumblesParty · 01/08/2024 23:14

There are 2 male boxers in the women’s Olympic boxing, so hopefully in the end they’ll come up against each other, and each will finally have to fight a man. I hope they have a horrible time.

TempestTost · 01/08/2024 23:14

Pipinnn · 01/08/2024 19:39

This ends the confusion surely??

That could be a pelvic guard/groin guard. It can look kind of wonky under shorts.

Snowypeaks · 01/08/2024 23:11

Sure, it could be potentially.

But the post I responded to suggested people with CAIS should box in the men's division which would be completely inappropriate, and shows a lack of understanding about that particular DSD.

BlondiBleach · 01/08/2024 23:18

TempestTost · 01/08/2024 22:17

CAIS individuals wouldn't be able to compete against males on a fair basis.

They are unable to compete against females on a fair basis. Or a safe basis.

similarminimer · 01/08/2024 23:18

@sadabouti - what's my world view? I have been really clear on this thread that people with androgen advantage should not compete with women.

I raised a concern that karyotyping people may not be the only/best way to assess fairness in sport. And people have responded WILDLY, and used a horribly oudated term, generally considered offensive, to describe people with DSDs. I get called a 'flat-earther'. I think the Dunning-Kruger effect is in play here.

I'd really like to know wtf you are being such a dick about.

It was stated that a person with CAIS should box men, and a picture posted of a person who clearly does not have CAIS.

I dis not say one thing about whether they should box against women. I believe that at the moment it's considered much less clear that they have an advantage over women, but there is some indication they might - and there are other arguments you might bring into it. I didn't say anything about those.

It's not like I'm a new poster here either.

CAIS clearly makes it impossible for anyone who has it to compete in the male category . I suppose it could suggest a paralympic category could make sense.

They're male.
They have other advantages which is why they do so well in female competition.

Women's competitions are for women. Where are the women and girls who are pushed out supposed to go?

protectourchildren · 01/08/2024 23:24

Khelif looks 100% male in every single photo of him. Not like a woman in the slightest. I thought CAIS DSD males were supposed to look less masculine? Khelif has an atheletic masculine shape and build.

Why does everyone think this is the DSD he has? I haven't seen any official comment, is it just made up by people wanting to justify his inclusion?

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 01/08/2024 23:25

How many people who actually have DSD are likely to end up in the Olympics? Not many I bet

nzborn · 01/08/2024 23:26

I'm currently in my gym in NZ and I am discussing it with everyone, they are saying are they transgender and I am saying no it's a man, they are all shocked saying things like won't they be disqualified.

I dont think anyone on this thread has suggested that he has CAIS.

CAIS males were dragged in. We don't know for sure about Khelif but some think it is likely that he has the same one as Caster Semenya - 46XY, 5-ARD.
