TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes”

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men?

”Two athletes competing at the Paris Olympics as “women” were previously disqualified from a women’s world championship for having “XY chromosomes.” Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan are scheduled to compete in Olympic women’s boxing next week despite past questions surrounding their biological sex.”

Excellent article, thanks for the share token. I am absolutely horrified at the pure contempt the IOC shows for women. It’s a disgrace.

CriticalCondition · 02/08/2024 21:55

That is an absolutely stonking article from Janice Turner. Thank you for sharing.

Statement from the IBA - the last 2 paragraphs are the chefs kiss
""As stated, the International Boxing Association (IBA) feels it appropriate at this prevalent time, to address recent media statements regarding those athletes Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif, particularly regarding their participation in the Paris Olympic Games 2024.

We wish to make the following points in these regards:
On 24 March 2023, IBA disqualified athletes Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif from the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships New Delhi 2023. This disqualification was a result of their failure to meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the women’s competition, as set and laid out in the IBA Regulations. This decision, made after a meticulous review, was extremely important and necessary to uphold the level of fairness and utmost integrity of the competition.

Point to note, the athletes did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognized test, whereby the specifics remain confidential. This test conclusively indicated that both athletes did not meet the required necessary eligibility criteria and were found to have competitive advantages over other female competitors.

The decision made by IBA on 24 March 2023, was subsequently ratified by the IBA Board of Directors on 25 March 2023. The official record of this decision can be accessed on the IBA website here IBA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes.
The disqualification was based on two tests conducted on both athletes as follows:

  • Test performed during the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul 2022.
  • Test performed during the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi 2023.

For clarification

  • Lin Yu-ting did not appeal the IBA’s decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), thus rendering the decision legally binding.
  • Imane Khelif initially appealed the decision to CAS but withdrew the appeal during the process, also making the IBA decision legally binding.

Our Committees have rigorously reviewed and endorsed the decision made during the World Championships. While IBA remains committed to ensuring competitive fairness in all of our events, we express concern over the inconsistent application of eligibility criteria by other sporting organizations, including those overseeing the Olympic Games. The IOC’s differing regulations on these matters, in which IBA is not involved, raise serious questions about both competitive fairness and athletes’ safety.

For clarification on why the IOC permits athletes with competitive advantages to compete in their events, we urge interested parties to seek answers directly from the IOC.
Yours sincerely,
International Boxing Association 😂

Don't know why I bother going on Reddit. The threads about this on the Olympic sub are misinfo central, and so proudly confident of it they are too. Seen lots of thirsting for the Algerian's next competitor being beaten in a "that'll show her" way. Disturbing.

Datun · 02/08/2024 22:09

Excellent article.

How come Janice Turner and the times aren't bound by the reporting restriction?

Igneococcus · 02/08/2024 22:10

There are some shockers in the comments under Janice's article as well @Herawouldntstandforthis

The pressure ion the IOC needs to continue. They are trying to get everyone to move on, those that have some power need to keep questioning and expose their lies such as tests being invasive.

SabrinaThwaite · 02/08/2024 22:21

This is a scandal assuming dimensions that the International Olympic Committee can no longer control, with each crushing victory by a biologically male fighter over a female confirming the impression that it has abandoned its fundamental duty of care.

Oliver Brown in the Telegraph - he’s not pulling any punches, is he?

murasaki · 02/08/2024 22:21

Agree, they are hoping it will all go 'nothing to see here '. The sunlight on this has been like being in the Sahara, they really don't like it.

SabrinaThwaite · 02/08/2024 22:22

Turdibekova’s distress was the worst possible look for the IOC, the day after a sobbing Carini had claimed she feared for her life during the mismatch with Khelif. Both these women needed the global governing body to act decisively to ensure their safety. And both have been abysmally let down.

ScrollingLeaves · 02/08/2024 22:25

Thank you very much. What a clear article. At least Times readers will be less confused than those relying on the BBC. Let’s hope they spread what they learn from it.

Great article in The Telegraph by Oliver Brown too. It’s behind a paywall, but y’know - there are ways 😜

An us-against-the-world mentality is forming in the two countries, and it could yet grow more pronounced. Khelif is a realistic contender to take the Olympic welterweight title, having already reached one gold-medal bout at world level, while Lin is a No 1 seed. The further they advance, the greater the heat on the IOC becomes. In this febrile atmosphere, the very essence of fair sport is at stake.

fucks sake. all this anger and division could be so easily avoided if the IOC had just kept the cheek swab test. utter twerps

Elsewhere in the city, the mood was tense. A group of women’s rights protesters had travelled from London to gather in Place de la Republique, where they chanted: “The IOC, the world can see, champions of misogyny.” A “Save Women’s Sports” banner was draped at the foot of the iconic statue of Marianne.

Does anyone know who the women are? Is it Fair Play for Women?

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/08/2024 20:52

@Christinapple a couple of questions:

Do you believe that XY people typically have an advantage in most sports over XX people? Yes or No.

Do you believe that identity trumps biology in sports? If an XY person says they are female, they should get to compete with XX people? Yes or No please.

If the answer to the above are Yes and No, do you believe that in women's sport a simple cheek swab should be used to stop cheating?

Because you're doing a lot of chatting about 'facts' that the athletes are this and that. But the above would sort everything out very quickly and easily. There will always be people who want a medal enough they will cause themselves irreparable damage physically. Simply stating they are female is a lot easier and safer than doping. Men will definitely do it to win. If allowed.

I'm not an expert, and neither is JK Rowling or Forstarter (which I heard was confirmed by a judge recently).

As mentioned, Imane has lost to 9 women in boxing before, one of whom has spoken out in support of her. She wasn't a newcomer out of nowhere, they knew who she was and used all the info to make the decision to allow her to compete. I have more trust and faith in them than what a children's author or a non-expert Maya Forstarter or ex comdey-writer (who I hear is in a little spot of hot soup) thinks.

NotBadConsidering · 02/08/2024 23:28

“Mediocre man isn’t good enough to win all the time” is such a dumb defence 🤣.

Let’s just ignore all the expert sports scientists condemning this and focus on the women you hate, shall we?

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/08/2024 23:39

I'm not an expert

I didn't ask for your credentials, I asked for your beliefs. Yes, or no.

Slippery cobblers isn't that. Just yes or no for your own beliefs.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/08/2024 23:45

Imane has lost to 9 women in boxing before

Oscar Pistorus beat atheletes with legs. That doesn't mean we should scrap the Paralympics or that he doesn't have a disability.

Plasmodesmata · 02/08/2024 23:49

Oscar Pistorius had to really fight to be allowed into the non-paralympic races as they were worried that his blades gave an advantage, as I recall.
Men might have been in danger of facing an unfair advantage. Obviously couldn't have that.
