TWO “Female Boxers” Set To Compete At Paris 2024 Were Previously Disqualified From Women’s World Championship For Having “XY Chromosomes”

Surely this cannot be true. In boxing of all sports. I thought boxing had told men they needed to compete with other men?

”Two athletes competing at the Paris Olympics as “women” were previously disqualified from a women’s world championship for having “XY chromosomes.” Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan are scheduled to compete in Olympic women’s boxing next week despite past questions surrounding their biological sex.”

I’m quite emotional about all of this, as the realisation that it is really going to take a woman to be seriously hurt, which she will then be victim blamed before anything will happen. I’m horrified by the people I know and the whataboutery absolutely horrified and ashamed of so many women who don’t give a shit of consequences

Women have already been hurt. Both in MMA with a cracked skull and volleyball with being permanently paralysed.

Nothing is going to stop them.

It horrifies me.

The lengths that people will go to.

FWR has had numerous testimonies about injuries sustained in women's rugby.

It's never going to be enough. There is no 'n' that will make some people or organisations reconsider their stance.

Someone was after the blue suit photo earlier, don't know if it got posted but the tweet below had these four photos attached

So the big issue here is that Lisa Nandy was made to feel uncomfortable? It's all so awkward and difficult, isn't it? 🙄

But baby steps, I suppose.

Fucks sake. As if it couldn't get more enraging! Boxing is a closed door to any self-respecting female athlete now.

Uncomfortable is the first step on the path to disbelieving, appalled, angry, furious then incandescent. This is an encouraging sign. Next stop Mont Blanc.

BBC reporting that the Hungarians are raising concerns with the IOC ahead of Khelif’s next bout tomorrow.

Have just read that Kehleif was born female and has lived her life as a female. Why are people saying she’s a man?

Go Luca! She is sharing other similar stuff too on her instagram. Though it seems various Algerian accounts are demanding she is forced to take them down.

There's several huge threads including this one where people have patiently explained in detail, over and over again if you want to find that information.

Because of Russian disinformation. A report from TASS is literally the only source for the rumour that either is XY, which emerged after one of them had beaten a Russian fighter. Which happened with interesting timing from a federation that was disaffiliated from the IOC because of blatant corruption (amongst other things) and basically run as an arm of the Russian government.

All that's happening here is that people are policing what womanhood can look like. Sometimes being a woman includes being strongly built - especially when a sportswoman - or having what may be termed "mannish" features. That it is being aimed at two women of colour is extremely concerning and (even if not intended so) has a whiff of racism around it.

Read up about Caster Semenya and consider whether Khelif is the same situation.

So does this mean there were no tests in 2022 & 2023? Or there were tests but they were done by a dodgy lab? When they were both banned from boxing in the female category at that point - apparently on the basis of these dodgy tests - they had the chance to appeal to the CAS in Lausanne which is independent but neither did. Why would you not appeal? And what's the Russians end game here? Making sure their boxers win by getting rid of the opposition?
I am not saying the IBA is a shining example of good governance but I don't get why they would do this.

greengreyblue · 02/08/2024 18:25

It’s current news. I’m not going to read up pages of threads. What were they born as?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 02/08/2024 18:26

This is what developmental biologist Emma Hilton has to say about Khelif.

"If it is, as suspected, 5ARD, this means: The baby starts developing as a healthy male (XY, testes, testosterone, all the internal plumbing). But the baby lacks a protein needed to make a penis grow. This means that baby’s external genitals can develop as female-looking. Hence, baby might be registered at birth as female. During puberty, the male internal bits start kicking out huge amounts of testosterone (as per male) and their external genitals start to become more masculine. It’s a kind of “catch up”. Not only that, but testosterone at puberty - produced by all that internal male biology - does all the regular stuff it does to muscles blah blah. So their body - the thing they run, jump and punch with - has developed like any other male. That’s why they shouldn’t be in female categories. It’s got precisely nothing to do with their external genitalia and what their paperwork says."

Read the IBA's second statement.

I see the gaslighting has started again.

To be clear. Sex is not defined by how masculine or feminine someone is, how much melanin they have in their skin or what race they are. It is defined by gametes.

I think that was 'creatively edited' by the BBC - Carini wants to apologise for refusing to shake her opponent's proffered hand, not for the whole thing.

There is a sort of noblesse oblige thing about shaking hands at the end of a bout, regardless..
It fits in with Carini calling herself 'a warrior', she obviously regrets not doing what she sees as the honourable thing.
We might thing she's crazy for wanting to shake Khelif's hand, but... she feels she should.

The BBC report is misinterpreting her gesture.

yourhairiswinterfire · 02/08/2024 18:37

Bit strange that Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif didn't dispute the findings that led to their disqualification last year then, don't you think?

Vespanest · 02/08/2024 18:38

Apologies in advance as I’m sure this has already been asked, how is drug testing working? are high level acceptable or are some boxers given a pass with testosterone because they have a passport? It would be interesting to know just how many boxers would be illegible if there was the same scrutiny as middle distance runners.
