FFS disability is now on the pride flag

I'm livid. I'm disabled and I do not want to be represented on the LGBTQ+ flag.

Also this quote: Dayna Halliwell (she/her), Content and Engagement Manager at Evenbreak, led the collaboration and organised the Pride visit. She said: “It was very moving and amazing to see the reaction of disabled people in the audience. You could see the joy on their faces of being represented in the parade.”

Yanbu. I am disabled too and disability should not be on the pride flag.

Why not?

LaLoba · 16/07/2024 09:04

Likewise. I want no part of the competitive victimhood that Pride has become.

WaitingForMojo · 16/07/2024 09:05

It’s a celebration of diversity, is it not?

Unless you’re incredibly homophobic and don’t want to be associated, I don’t see why you’d have a problem with it.

PriOn1 · 16/07/2024 09:06

Forced teaming. It’s a pointless branding exercise to make their cause look better.

UpThePankhurst · 16/07/2024 09:07

Likewise. I'm gay AND disabled and don't want to be involved in that mess on either count.

Fgs it's now just an 'everybody' flag, and a cynical mind would say it's the TQ political lobby dominated charities hoovering up briefs, funding and every other equality movement to control it the way they've consumed the LGB ones. There'll be save the whales on there any minute.

QAOPspaceman · 16/07/2024 09:08

At least this takes it one step closer to collapsing under the weight of its own bullshit

Nellieinthebarn · 16/07/2024 09:08

Likewise disabled, and do not want to be associated with this batshittery.

WaitingForMojo · 16/07/2024 09:09

Disabled and gay, and personally think it’s fab.

Then I'm afraid you have missed out on a whole lot of relevant information.

I'd suggest starting with articles from the Gay Mens Network, they're well written and good explanations of why many LGB people are very unhappy about this, and why the dominating movement under the rainbow is actually quite fantastically homophobic.

Singleandproud · 16/07/2024 09:09

I think I would be pretty pissed off if I was same sex attracted. They should leave the original rainbow flag as it was to represent what it always has. If other causes want a flag then use their own and raise awareness. All of these progressions just dilute the original meaning, soon it's just going to be a thin rainbow band or border with everything else taking centre stage

It's also hard to miss who has the power to include and exclude, and doesn't bother consulting any other group they 'represent'.

Power. Power and money.

Rainbowsponge · 16/07/2024 09:11

I’m disabled and very unhappy about this.

YourNimblePeachTraybake · 16/07/2024 09:12

Disabled and gay here.
Don't want to be on any flag.

GrimDamnFanjo · 16/07/2024 09:12

Is everything a sexuality now?

Justme56 · 16/07/2024 09:12

I thought the initial rainbow flag was meant to represent everyone - regardless of any other characteristics. Obviously some people think that it didn’t.

Quote if the day. Eventually we will all be ' othered' there will be no others.

Shall we include race? Language? Minority language groups should be considered too.

The pride flag was about sexual orientation. When you stick disability in to whitewash having included fetish, then you're doubling down on the mistake.

Hoardasurass · 16/07/2024 09:16

Well I'm disappointed but not surprised as they've had an autism pride flag for a while, having effectively made it a condition that anyone can self-id into, in the same way that they have with being a woman. It was only a matter of time before they came for all disabilities, especially when you consider that scot gov and several other woke bodies have been asking people if they identify as disabled rather than if they are for quite some time now.

Signalbox · 16/07/2024 09:17

I don’t understand why the rainbow doesn’t already include disabled gay people. Does adding disabled people mean they weren’t included before?

CatMumSlave · 16/07/2024 09:17

The original LBGT flag was fine but now it's just too confusing and baking a mockery out of it all.

elliejjtiny · 16/07/2024 09:18

JohnnyAndTheDead · 16/07/2024 09:03

Why not?

Because disability and LGBTQ are completely different things. It would be like having a flag for disabled people and vegetarians.

Also I don't feel like celebrating my disability most of the time.

Waitingfordoggo · 16/07/2024 09:18

Justme56 · 16/07/2024 09:12

I thought this when they added the black and brown stripes to include people of colour. Surely the original flag would have included all LGBT people? Weird if it didn’t!
