Jess Phillips has been appointed to the Labour government as a minister, focusing on tackling violence against women and girls and domestic violence.

The Labour MP has been a vocal campaigner on the subject, and has become known for reading out a list of all the women killed by men in the UK every year on International Women's Day in parliament.

Ms Phillips had the role of shadow domestic violence and safeguarding minister from 2020 to 2023 under Sir Keir Starmer but resigned over the party's stance on the Middle East conflict in November.

She was one of 56 Labour MPs - including eight frontbenchers - to vote in favour of an SNP motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East.

This defied the Labour whip, and so Ms Phillips had to step aside.

Jess Phillips made minister following frontbench resignation over Middle East

The Birmingham Yardley MP has been appointed to the Home Office team, working under Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. She previously held a shadow role for domestic violence and safeguarding but stood down last year.

Excellent.

IwantToRetire · 09/07/2024 23:51

Well irrespective of anything else, she has made it clear that women who are survivors of male violence need support services that are ONLY by and for biological women.

Though I believe she has said that there can be other types of women.

But hopefully this appointment shows that there will be a Minister who will stand up for the right of biological women to have service provision only from other biological women.

Excellent choice. It's the perfect role for her and I hope she makes the best of it.

ThePure · 10/07/2024 00:12

I am so pleased that it looks as though many members of the new cabinet are people who actually care about and have proven track records in the areas they are in charge of. I really hope she can make a difference

Imagine them appointing anyone else to this role honestly. It would be a HUGE slight.

IwantToRetire · 10/07/2024 00:17

Is this a new position?

I mean has there ever been a Minister to focus on tackling Violence Against Women and Girls and Domestic Violence.

I am glad they have made the title clearly about women not only being at risk from strangers but also from men in their own homes.

She's been a bit of a disappointment because she either doesn't know what a woman is or does know but won't state it publicly.

But she has a very strong record of campaigning against male violence to women and girls so is an excellent choice in that respect.

After 14 years of Austerity under the Tories, the derision of experts and the buffoonery if the Johnson era, it really does seem as though the grown ups are back in charge.

You can't have women's rights without knowing who/what women are.

She knows. But if she wants to get anywhere in government where she can have impact, she needs to toe the line a bit.

Hiphopopotamonster · 10/07/2024 00:29

The phrase is just so utterly cliche at this point. According to your description, Putin ‘knows what a woman is’. Hitler ‘knew what a woman was’. The fucking Taliban ‘know what a woman is’. Have you not noticed that those who subscribe to your narrow definition are also the ones most likely to rape and degrade women, keep them barefoot and pregnant and earning less? I’ll take feminism that recognises trans women and also looks closely at domestic violence, childcare prices and parental leave.

Andthereitis · 10/07/2024 00:30

domestic violence and safeguarding... ?

So is she the real womens minister?

So I suspect this is as good as were getting and should be happy.

It all feels a bit odd that this is actually such a difficult subject for our Government.

It's very basic - women's rights, by definition, exclude men, including the ones that pretend to be women.

I'm glad Jess Phillips'' work and expertise in VAWG has been recognised by this appointment.
i look forward to all the Labour women being able to speak freely.

Oh the irony.

Yes. Yes we have noticed. Charging the definition of woman to include some men isn't going to address those issues that affect biological women, its it?

Saying that sexism is caused by knowing what a woman is, is the most arse about face argument I've ever heard!

IwantToRetire · 10/07/2024 00:34

So is she the real womens minister?

Good question. Maybe the other 2 are just a smoke screen! Grin

It’s not ironic at all. Check who’s in your camp. Those who hold to a very narrow view of what a woman is, tend to also be those who subscribe to a very narrow definition of what a woman can do.

Hitler was a vegetarian, therefore Linda McCartney was a Nazi. Same reasoning as your nonsense.

Time for this again.

Jess Phillips appointed a minister to focus on tackling violence against women and girls and domestic violence.

Oh what a lovely little Venn diagram. It’s rubbish but the colours are very pretty.

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/07/2024 00:42

This is a brilliant step by the Labour government. Jess will be class and I wish her all the best in her new role.❤️

I'm so happy to have a government that recognises poison that is male violence against women and children. It infects everyone and every section of society. Tackling it will be a huge undertaking but I'm hopeful because the benefits will be huge.🤞

Hiphopopotamonster · 10/07/2024 00:42

I’m guessing you all came up through the feminism of the 80s, read a lot of Germaine Greer and refuse to believe the world has moved on without you

I don't have a 'camp'.

The bad company argument isn't very useful.

You might as well argue that vegetarianism is bad because Hitler was vegetarian (you might also want to look up Godwin's law).

Women are discriminated against because of their sex.

I'm glad the issue of VAWG appears to be being given the gravity it's due by having a specific minister. Hopefully some real progress can be made.

I'm an old school, left wing feminist.

Women are oppressed and discriminated against because of our sex and need to be protected on the basis of our sex.

Most crimes of sexual violence are committed by males and most victims of sexual violence are female. Ditto domestic violence.

I think that Jess Philips is an excellent choice to lead the government strategies to tackle these issues.

Men who call themselves transwomen are still men
If they wish they weren't men, that is not women's problem to solve. If they feel uncomfortable with other men, that is not women's problem to solve.

They can campaign for 3rd spaces or they can campaign for men to become more accepting of gender nonconforming men.

I don't care which. I'm not interested in "transwomen". I'm interested in women.

Yes I think this is it. She is the real women's minister. She will stand up for women and girls against violence and for safeguarding. She'll work alongside Wes as Minister for Health & Social Care. The other two are stooges and will take the flack from the TRA's before being ousted.
