Jess Phillips has been appointed to the Labour government as a minister, focusing on tackling violence against women and girls and domestic violence.

The Labour MP has been a vocal campaigner on the subject, and has become known for reading out a list of all the women killed by men in the UK every year on International Women's Day in parliament.

Ms Phillips had the role of shadow domestic violence and safeguarding minister from 2020 to 2023 under Sir Keir Starmer but resigned over the party's stance on the Middle East conflict in November.

She was one of 56 Labour MPs - including eight frontbenchers - to vote in favour of an SNP motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East.

This defied the Labour whip, and so Ms Phillips had to step aside.

Jess Phillips made minister following frontbench resignation over Middle East

The Birmingham Yardley MP has been appointed to the Home Office team, working under Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. She previously held a shadow role for domestic violence and safeguarding but stood down last year.

Blimey. You don't often get an almost full house of TRA bingo in just one post.
Impressive. 😂

No 'genitals' though.

😂 yeah I’m angry that your ridiculous narrative has taken over mumsnet and that no subject can be talked about without first saying ‘well X doesn’t know what a woman is’.

I’m angry that you’re hijacking feminism and women’s rights by punching down to another more marginalised community.

I’m angry that you’re using exactly the same rhetoric that was used against gay rights 50 years ago.

And I’m definitely angry that you all seem to be too ignorant and in trenched to recognise all of this.

Hey - that Stalin. Mostly bad ey? But at least he knew what a woman was.

There is one sub forum on the entire board in which those who want to discuss the issue of women's sex based rights and protections and the conflict with trans ideology can do so.

If you cannot think clearly or differentiate adequately you are never going to be able to discuss why your statement about gay rights simply isn't true.
You have to be able to clearly identify the different elements of something if you want to effectively analyse it.

“You’re all utterly insane” - from a clearly very angry poster

CurlewKate · 10/07/2024 07:42

@Hiphopopotamonster "I’m guessing you all came up through the feminism of the 80s, read a lot of Germaine Greer and refuse to believe the world has moved on without you"

I am perfectly prepared to accept that the world has moved on without me. What really pisses me off is young women trying to destroy the ladder they climbed up to get to where they are today.

FrancescaContini · 10/07/2024 07:42

Laughing at “ignorant”

possibly even “frothing” 😉

The word “angry” used four times in one post. Woah.

The phrase is just so utterly cliche at this point. According to your description, Putin ‘knows what a woman is’. Hitler ‘knew what a woman was’. The fucking Taliban ‘know what a woman is’. Have you not noticed that those who subscribe to your narrow definition are also the ones most likely to rape and degrade women, keep them barefoot and pregnant and earning less? I’ll take feminism that recognises trans women and also looks closely at domestic violence, childcare prices and parental leave.

Excellent points 👌

KateDelRick · 10/07/2024 07:46

Jess Phillips will do a good job. Let's just see what is put in place.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 10/07/2024 07:49

Why are they excellent points when TW are men?

feminism is about women, not supporting men who perform gender stereotypes the very gender stereotypes feminists want to get away from

society - women need to look pretty, have long hair and wear make up, dresses and heals
TW - I’m a woman because I wear heals, dresses and have long hair

GC feminists - women can dress however they want, only thing that makes someone a women is being born an adult human female

Hepwo · 10/07/2024 07:50

Hiphopopotamonster · 10/07/2024 00:55

Yep. You’re right. So what about infertile women. What about women who have had a hysterectomy. Are they still women? Do they still experience discrimination based on still looking like they could get pregnant. What about trans women who look like they could also get pregnant? Trans women who can be raped. What about very masculine presenting women? Are they still women? Even if they don’t look like women?

Its nuanced. The whole thing. But you all reduce it down to how female presenting you are.

That's not nuance, it's just stupidity.
You think we are insane but you rely on this tired old whataboutary.

Childish rubbish. I thought you wanted to talk about politics and you roll out this garbage.

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 10/07/2024 07:51

I think Labour are going to find out that the issue they say never comes up on the doorstep is about to burst out of their red boxes

You were alive in the 70s? You seem pretty nasty about older women so I'm surprised you were around in the 70s to discuss gay rights.

If you recall there was never any requests from gay men to take part in women's sports and use women's hospital wards.

Gay men did cross dress and pretend to be women though due to homophobia then and this is the origin of trans rights now as we know, gay men so ashamed of it they pretend they are women and wanting to be married as women.

I love Jess Phillips and her podcast (Electoral Dysfunction) is a lot of fun and very informative, but in a different way to The Rest is Politics. Much more personal.

Thanks for recommending that podcast - I hadn't heard of it before. I'm always looking for new politics podcasts.

When I read responses like this it reminds me that “argument” in the pure definition of the word, is a reasoned exchange of dialogue with the aim of altering the opposing view.
This isn’t it. This is dismissive ageism and condescension.
The “world” has very much moved on since trans activism’s weasel words became accepted as “being kind”.
Examine the arguments and then look at reality. The argument is simple - sex matters in the everyday world where women have a right to the following:
single sex rape and DV shelters
single sex sport
same sex relationships
single sex short lists and initiatives

Persuade me why the above aren’t justifiable from an ethical and moral point of view. Preferably using a reasoned argument and not reaching for dismissive “not with us, therefore against us”

Fidelius · 10/07/2024 08:20

I’m chuffed to bits with Jess’s appointment. She’s driven, fearless and a strong advocate for women.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 10/07/2024 08:21

I'm not sure I'd have picked Phillips. Her main talent is self-promotion - she doesn't really have any concrete achievements but I can't deny she's brilliant at making everything about herself no matter how tenuous the connection. Hobbies: threatening to leave Labour and grabbing earning gigs.

Yes. Jess Phillips cares about Jess Phillips. Hence why she resigned the frontbench in opposition.

Well irrespective of anything else, she has made it clear that women who are survivors of male violence need support services that are ONLY by and for biological women.

Though I believe she has said that there can be other types of women.

But hopefully this appointment shows that there will be a Minister who will stand up for the right of biological women to have service provision only from other biological women.

Edited

Why is that your first takeaway from this, rather than focussing on addressing male violence so that there is no need for support services anyway?

What is the relevance of your statement that these men who hate women on a collective level know what a woman is?

It is overly simplistic and extreme ‘guilt by association’ to use them as a reason to not fully support the prioritisation of sex over gender when sex matters.

If those people didn’t know who was a women, they wouldn’t be able to identify who to discriminate against or murder for non-compliance. So, of course they know.

Saying “I won’t support single sex spaces because some hateful men can accurately define which humans are female” isn’t clever. It is a sign that you as a person will only adopt points of view that a group of people you deem as acceptable hold. It doesn’t show you have shown independent thought at all.

Using that line of thinking, do you also reject vegetarianism because allegedly Hilter was one and you wouldn’t want to be associated with Hilter having the same beliefs?

Chariothorses · 10/07/2024 08:29

I am reserving judgement - actions speak louder than words. In Bristol, under the Labour council, all abuse support has been made mixed sex- domestic abuse, Freedom Programme, rape, sexual assault etc. Women who need female only abuse support are excluded, and are not being counted. It is cruel, and local well known Labour MPs who supposedly care for women, like Thangam Debonnaire (now out) said nothing.

childrenoftransitioners.org/2024/04/13/the-trans-lobby-has-destroyed-provision-for-female-abuse-victims-in-bristol-and-elsewhere-and-will-do-the-same-for-the-victims-bill/

In Brighton 'Sarah' is going to court for just a single female only rape support group.

Sausagenbacon · 10/07/2024 08:33

So, now we have Annaliese Dodds as women and Equalities and Development . Bridget Phillipson as Women and Equalities and Education. And Jess Phillips as VAWG.
Why doesn't VAWG come within the remit of W&e?
Why is W&E spread between to ministers, who already have posts?
Sounds like a job creation scheme for Civil Servants.
