NHS challenged by women forced to share changing room with transwoman

MrsOvertonsWindow · 26/05/2024 07:02

The Daily Mail reporting on a group of 36 nurses complaining that they're forced to share an open plan changing room with a man who claims to be a woman, behaves inappropriately, is sexually active (trying for a baby with his partner) yet is given access to women undressing as he claims to be trans.
Following two formal written complaints where the response was that they needed to be be "more inclusive', 'broaden their mindset' and 'be educated and attend training" six of the nurses are now going to an employment tribunal claiming sexual harassment and sexual discrimination.
Note the article uses he pronouns.

Nurses made to share changing room with trans colleague to sue NHS

In a formal complaint, the nurses say they were stunned after the 'sexually active' trans nurse admitted to trying for a baby with a female partner and had stopped taking female hormones.

Chario, yes I was referring the they daughter of translationers.

Jimmy Saville and all those like him will be having an absolute field day with all of this.

Chariothorses · 30/06/2024 11:47

@JaneVtwaddle
Yes one of the dads in this Cots article influenced Green party policy. A lot of sex offending men appear to have friends in high places, just like Jimmy Saville. https://childrenoftransitioners.org/2021/09/25/not-shutting-up/

(Sorry don't want derail thread)

Not Shutting Up

The site received a lot of attention last week, when Maya Forstater kindly linked to one of our articles on Twitter. There were some lovely and positive and supportive comments from readers. Thank …

Thanks for posting the link @Chariothorses . I don't think it's a derail as those replies to those articles show the bullying, dominating and attempts to shame by the TRA/MRAs towards anyone who speaks up. They refuse to listen even to the children of transitioners and their very real experience. This is also how these nurses are being treated and I admire their bravery. It is going to take a mass movement to stop this ideology from progressing. The NHS is a UK Employer with one of the largest female workforce. I do believe standing together these important rights and Safeguarding can be protected.

I live in Darlington and have written to all of the candidates asking them to confirm their parties policies on the provision of single sex places to preserve the privacy and dignity of women. I also asked them what they would do, as the Darlington MP, to support these women.

So far I have had a reply from Reform:
Thank you for your email. I, and Reform UK, are committed to maintaining single-sex spaces. I have given unwavering support for the nurses and have been contacted by their media agent, who has asked if I will meet them to discuss what I can do for them, which I have accepted. I have also contacted our leader, Nigel Farage, asking for him to publicly support the nurses in their battle.

Please allow me to send you the links of the support I gave to the nurses on my facebook page (7,000 followers) and the questions I have asked Darlington Borough councillors about the Council's policy on single-sex spaces. Myself and my friend Leigh Thomas have been proactive in confronting the council in fighting to keep single-sex spaces. I will be asking a question to the councillors at the next council meeting re: single-sex spaces. If you would like to join our fight my number is 07415077137, I can put you in touch with Leigh who is very active in this area.

I also have received the following reply from the Labour candidate:
Thank you for your email regarding recent developments at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
Labour is proud of our record of championing equal rights in government, especially the Equality Act 2010 and the balance it strikes between protecting people based on gender reassignment and protecting spaces for biological women in certain circumstances.
If elected on July 4th, Labour will modernise the law on gender recognition while protecting spaces for biological women.
As we are the party of equality, Labour will also treat all LGBT+ people fairly, with respect and equality. Labour will stand up for LGBT+ rights in government and oppose any attempts by the Conservatives to roll them back while in opposition.
Labour will strengthen and equalise the law so that every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offence, accepting the Law Commission’s recommendation that the aggravated offences regime be extended to all five protected characteristics (race, religion, sexual identity, transgender identity and disability).
This will ensure that everyone who falls victim to hate crime is treated equally under the law, and that the perpetrators of anti-LGBT+ and disability hate can no longer dodge longer sentences.
If Lola is privileged to be elected to serve as the next Labour MP for Darlington, and you would like to discuss this matter further, then she suggests you come and see her in her office.
If you want to read more about Labour’s plan for Government, the please click on the following link Change – The Labour Party
Lola hopes she can count on your vote on July 4th and let’s get our country back on its feet.
If you want change, you need to vote for it.
Best Wishes
Nick

Peter Gibson (the current Conservative MP) appears to not be contactable anymore and I've not received a response from him. I have however contacted him about women's single sex spaces previously and he has spoken common sense.

I have not heard from the Green candidate (Matthew Snedker) or the Liberal Democrat candidate (Simon Thorley).

I am most frustrated by the Labour candidates response because the previous longstanding Labour MP Jenny Chapman was very sensible about this issue.

Edited to correct safe to single sex

maltravers · 03/07/2024 21:10

So Labour’s position is “suck it up nurses” or have I misunderstood the waffle?

Darlingtonvoter · 03/07/2024 21:13

Sounds like it, bloody awful isn't it. It's a 2 horse race in Darlington between the conservatives and labour and labour looks set to regain the seat.

DuesToTheDirt · 03/07/2024 21:27

@Darlingtonvoter so you ask the Labour Party about women's rights and they give you a load of waffle about trans rights. Par for the course. "Biological women" Hmm are mentioned twice, and LGBT 3 times, transgender once and gender identity once. "As we are the party of equality, Labour will also treat all LGBT+ people fairly, with respect and equality. Labour will stand up for LGBT+ rights in government and oppose any attempts by the Conservatives to roll them back while in opposition." Totally not what you asked!

Women, know your place in the hierarchy of rights.

Omlettes · 03/07/2024 21:27

Does anyone know if the nurses are crowdfunding?

JanesLittleGirl · 03/07/2024 21:40

So the Labour position is "What the fuck is their problem and will you get me another cup of tea love?"

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 03/07/2024 21:51

I live in Darlington and have written to all of the candidates asking them to confirm their parties policies on the provision of single sex places to preserve the privacy and dignity of women. I also asked them what they would do, as the Darlington MP, to support these women.

Well, Labour did answer your question. That's Q1 "Other people first" and Q2 "Pretend it didn't happen". With waffle.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 03/07/2024 23:08

Reform it is then….

ifIwerenotanandroid · 03/07/2024 23:18

Labour will strengthen and equalise the law so that every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offence, accepting the Law Commission’s recommendation that the aggravated offences regime be extended to all five protected characteristics (race, religion, sexual identity, transgender identity and disability).

Hang on, aren't there nine? From the Local Government Association:

The characteristics that are protected by the Equality Act 2010 are:

  1. age
  2. disability
  3. gender reassignment
  4. marriage or civil partnership (in employment only)
  5. pregnancy and maternity
  6. race
  7. religion or belief
  8. sex
  9. sexual orientation.

'sexual identity, transgender identity' aren't in that list. What's sexual identity?

Hepwo · 03/07/2024 23:29

This man is reassigning his gender and using the women's changing room IS HOW HE DOES THAT.

With full support from Labour.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 03/07/2024 23:33

"Hate Crimes" are not not the same as the Equality Act. The Law Commission does say that the law only recognises the five characteristics listed by the Labour party for "Hate Crimes".

https://lawcom.gov.uk/project/hate-crime/

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 03/07/2024 23:49

So, thinking about what the Law Commission says on their website in the section Tackling sex and gender abuse... they say the Hate Crimes act is no use to women and can't be made to help women.

Which means in turn - the Hate Crimes act isn't what the Labour Party should focus on when they are asked about women. They should stick to tidying up the Equality Act 2010 which does make a big difference to women.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 03/07/2024 23:53

Interesting:

Protecting freedom of expression
Whilst the Commission has recommended some extensions to hate crime legislation, we have coupled these with reforms to hate speech laws and new protections for freedom of expression to ensure that only the most egregious hate speech is criminalised.
In relation to the stirring up hatred offences, the Commission has recommended:

  1. Replacing the dwelling exemption with protection for private conversations to ensure they are exempted regardless of where they take place
  2. Explicit protection for “gender critical” views...

But I thought Labour said they ARE going to introduce misogyny into hate crime legislation? (Depends how.)

And I haven't heard them pushing this much in the run-up to the election - have they been?

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 03/07/2024 23:57

Though having said that - under Freedom of expression they propose:

  1. Explicit protection for “gender critical” views, criticism of foreign governments, and discussion of cultural practices, and immigration, asylum and citizenship policy

So if Labour are on board with the Law Commission we could try to hold them to that.

Does bracketing “gender critical” views with "criticism of foreign governments" for protection make this Labour-ish, or does bracketing “gender critical” views with "discussion of ... immigration, asylum and citizenship policy" make it rightwing?

Maybe Labour will pick and choose and protect free expression for the views it likes.

The Law Commission disagrees with Labour about misogyny, so Labour are picking and choosing from its conclusions.

Reform it is then….

As I told my DD (16) last night when she was reading through the manifestos they include some apparently sensible policies to seem more reasonable but you shouldn't ignore the hatred behind their top two policies which are about stopping immigration.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 04/07/2024 16:53

I know, don’t worry!
