Are you voting in the next general election purely on the transgender issue?

Just as the title says really! Is that your only thought about who you'll vote for, or will you look at wider policies? Been getting lots of information through my letter box recently, and none mention it.

It’s SNP vs Labour where I am. I checked the labour candidate out and saw that they support Cass review and also retweeted criticism of the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre so I’ll vote them. I’m not voting solely on this issue but I might have been put off voting if they supported the crazy ideologies.

Oh, wow, that is good to hear! I wish that was my Labour candidate. I wonder if it is?!

It's not. 😔

It's a consideration. I'm one of those 'traditional Labour' voters. I have no time for the Tories and I think they've fucked up the country. However, Labour aren't just bad on 'the transgender issue'. The Newsnight report on Diane Abbott (who I have very little time for politically) together with their treatment of Rosie Duffield points to a much wider problem with women in particular. And the video of Angela Rayner basically pleading for votes in a room full of men has just about put the tin hat on it.

Signalbox · 05/06/2024 08:49

Interesting that Labour are now promoting themselves as the party of low taxation.

I just emailed all the candidates in my area (other than greens and reform as I won’t vote for them, and not my SDP candidate as she doesn’t have an email) asking them 5 questions that are important to me! Only the conservative has replied so far.

Dandel10n · 30/04/2024 13:01

No. The Labour Party have hugely pissed me off on this issue, but overall I feel that the Conservatives are just so bad for the country and I disagree with them on so many other things that my priority is to vote against them.

Sadly, I agree. I think another 5 years of Tory government would probably wreck the NHS beyond repair. And there would be other problems if the Tories get back in. But I am worried about what Labour will do on the gender issue, especially if they have a massive majority.

To me what would be more of a worry would be a hung parliament with Labour propped up by the Lib Dems. That would be the worst case scenario on the gender front. Although you're probably right too re the massive majority.

Oh don't even think it 🫣

I emailed our Labour candidate and she doesn't want to discuss the issues surrounding the meaning of sex in the Equality Act or the impact of the GRC on the ability of men to be legal women and enter women's spaces.

She doesn't care that she has lost my vote as a result of her lack of interest in women's issues.

Very disappointing.

I wonder how many other issues it's acceptable to tell constituents that they can't be arsed to think about the issue raised/?

I know. I replied to that email with a similar response with some specific questions, she didn't even bother to reply.

YesHesAPlonker · 05/06/2024 12:25

my dilemma is my seat is a lib dem / Tory swing seat.

Tory woman who is a bit wet, sound on women's rights vs Lib Dem new candidate who looks to be OK, but very silent on women's issues so far.

no matter how good this new candidate is - I really don't want the Lib dems to have any balance of power in the new parliament. They are totally captured.

Up until now it's been an easy choice to lend the lib dems my vote to try and keep the Tories out.

I wonder if someone like sex matters could do a freedom of information request to find out how many people are being ignored like this?

I got zero response from the police crime commissioner in the last election. It's beyond a joke.

HelenaTranscart · 05/06/2024 12:35

The Women's Rights Network are tweeting where candidates stand on the gender issue so useful to see what yours are saying. But it's great to ask them the questions as it'll let them know it's important and can't be dismissed.

In general, Reform and Tory are gender critical, while Labour, Lib Dems, SNP and Greens are captured, but there are outliers and independents.

I'm not right leaning but cannot vote for the captured parties, so guess I'll hold my nose and vote strategically to hopefully keep the Scottish Nasty Party out.

Wow
A Labour candidate who doesn’t care about 51% of her voters !

Eugh for you

They won’t discuss it as women don’t matter

DuesToTheDirt · 05/06/2024 18:38

I emailed my SNP MP around the time of Westminster proposing to quash the GRR bill. Didn't get any reply.

He was on my doorstep the other day, and when he asked if I'd consider voting for him, I said no, because I valued women's rights. He said he did too (though of course "trans people are vulnerable" Hmm), but I pointed out he'd never replied to my email on the subject... Well, it might have been him that ignored it, or it might have been some gender-obsessed intern, but he knows why he and the SNP have lost my vote.

Interesting that Labour are now promoting themselves as the party of low taxation.

Sometimes it seems like they are completely reversing their policy approaches.

But I suppose, they aren't likely to have enough money to spend on things like the NHS anyway, so they are limited as far as financial relief they could offer people. So low taxes it is.

I'm not sure they're promoting themselves as the party of LOW taxation. Just the party of no higher than the massively HIGH taxation we have now.

Labour won’t be low taxes. There’s a mismatch between what they are offering and the funding available to do it.

Taxation is already really high. They don't need to up taxes as much as they need to sort out what is being done with current taxes.

Desecratedcoconut · 06/06/2024 07:11

Rachel Reeves has refused to say that she won't raise taxes. I think she has committed to no increases in ni, income tax or vat. But the rest is up for grabs, I suppose.

I think the narrative around benefit cheats and pip clampdowns is going to do some heavy lifting in creating theoretical fresh money to achieve new things but I'm not confident that will materialise in practice.
