Just as the title says really! Is that your only thought about who you'll vote for, or will you look at wider policies? Been getting lots of information through my letter box recently, and none mention it.

I don't think any country has the responsibility, or the ability, to stop migrants in other countries trying to get to some other third place. That's just not realistic. It would be like trying to stop crime in some totally separate nation.

Polishedshoesalways · 12/05/2024 02:52

First point to make is that 95% are ECONOMIC migrants not refugees. There is a world of difference between the two. I wish you would stop conflating them for political point scoring. It’s an insult to real refugees genuinely fleeing persecution.

Secondly - yes the third country option most definitely works, and has a proven track record for years in other countries.

Labours plan is do nothing. Allow the traffickers to continue. In fact I’m hearing they plan to reintroduce FOM via the back door. So actually Labour are going to make this situation a million times worse.

Why is not going to happen? The French have already offered facilities for asylum checks to be made there. If it doesn't, then the answer has to be to offer safe passage combined with an efficient asylum checking system on our side of the channel.

The point which you are not answering is that it is utterly hypocritical to claim that refugees going to Ireland is any sort of vindication. If Sunak and his mates were even slightly genuine in being motivated by the risk to life, they would not claim this, because manifestly refugees trying to get to Ireland will still be risking their lives.

I think people need to be realistic about what is possible, especially with law as it is

The French processing idea is not going to happen, no major party is suggesting it. The main reason why is likely due to the sheer volume of people moving to the processing location and trying. We’re also not going to offer safe passage, it’s really not in the picture for any country.

Also it helps to look at the direction of other comparable countries - the EU, US, Aus. As the borders there get more hardline it re routes the flow of people.

Aus has been tough for a while but others will start to follow.

Currently people are leaving U.K. to Ireland on their own accord, of course not great for Ireland but that’s the impact

No one can take out trafficking networks, they are funded, huge and likely state backed originating in countries such as Iraq, it’s a mistake to propose it as a possibility.

So your options are limited, with international law as it is. It’d be good if we could get some weight and discussion on all this for people to get more of an understanding. This trafficking issue plus climate crisis is the biggest incoming thing we’ll face. If you look at projections you’ll see why.

Bululu · 12/05/2024 08:29

No, I would be also be voting against private school taxes, the masses of low education low income immigration. I would vote to prevent the hard die lefties getting in.

Bululu · 12/05/2024 08:41

Why people keep ignoring the state of Wales?

Why people keep ignoring the state of Wales?

And Scotland under a non-Tory Govt. English-centric thinking presumably - no other part of the UK features on their radars.

For a moment I thought trans identified men were coming over the channel or I'd joined the wrong thread

axolotlfloof · 19/05/2024 07:57

I am going to vote Tory. It will be the first time.
I normally vote lib dem or green.
Their policies on this issue are far too ridiculous.
I don't know what the Labour candidate's view is but he lives outside the constituency which seems ridiculous.
Our local lib dem I know and like (and I know he doesn't think TWAW).
However he won't win.
The Tory is a sitting MP and also doesn't think TWAW.
I will vote for him over Labour.
Incidentally all candidates announced are Men.

I agree.
Im a floating voter and I won’t be voting for any party that erodes woman's rights

CurlewKate · 19/05/2024 13:05

No. Because life's not that simple.

Nellieinthebarn · 19/05/2024 13:15

I don't think I can bring myself to vote Tory, so I think I will write 'none of the above are fit to govern' or just draw a massive cock and balls on the ballot paper. This is the first time I have even considered not voting, and its making me very depressed at the state of politics of this country.

My position exactly. Can't vote for the Tories but also can't vote for anyone who can't answer the simplest of questions which has the simplest of answers. What is a woman. An adult human female.

If they can't answer that then I have no confidence in their competence in ANY other issue.

AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen · 19/05/2024 15:14

I have read many posters on MN saying they will deface their vote as they
can’t vote for Labour
and won't vote for the Conservatives.

That simply means so many voters, women particularly it seems, will lose their voice and loose their chance to speak up.
No one is interested in a spoiled vote, no one will see your outrage.

That’s right. It’s tough to know what to do. Labour don’t seem to realise lots of women are taking this seriously. They think they are so ‘bullet proof’ at the moment, that it doesn’t matter. Old fashioned women don’t matter. Only the ones with penises.

I wonder if Labour might get a nasty surprise at the polls.

Probably not if all those outraged women spoil their vote.
Its less than a hundred years since we got the vote, why throw that away.

Ive counted votes for nearly 20years and the spoiled ones just get counted ( as spoiled ) then thrown in the bin. It’s pointless !

Exactly. Either go and vote or don’t bother. It’s a choice.

One problem is that if Labour don't get a majority they will have to go into coalition with the Lib Dems and/or greens who are gender woo fruit loops at the moment. I am so hoping Labour commit to single sex spaces in their manifesto and continue to accept the Cass Report. Given the horrors that might come with a coalition that would be enough for them to get my vote tbh. We're in a Red Wall area which is likely to go labour then I can have an MP to work on.

The spoiled votes are counted. This tells us something. It tells us that a certain number of people are politically engaged enough to come out to vote but disenchanted enough to spoil their ballot. I don’t see this as pointless.

If they don’t get a majority it won’t necessarily mean a coalition.
I appreciate it could.

However I wouldn’t vote for any party in the hope they might change their mind. They would have to do that before or during their campaign and absolutely guarantee they will stick to it.
I can’t see Labour doing that. Not that they haven’t changed their minds and policies so much before ( oops we can’t take charitable status away from Ini schools, dear me we ll do something else then to get that lovely popular vote 🤯🤪🤣)

As an aside - Maybe someone should send Starmer a gcse biology book with diagrams and hope he’s capable of simple comprehension.

Most spoiled votes in the past ( only my own experience when counting in North London and SouthEast ) are people drawing weird images, we ve had religious symbols, far right symbols, people asking for more trees, more coffee shops, the right to walk around nude. You name it people have probably said it. They all get put in a pile, counted and dumped.

No one takes any notice.

Lots of votes could be seen as 'pointless' for various reasons.

Doesn't really matter. It's our vote to do with as we see fit. Beauty of democracy.

We have to count them. All votes have to be counted
Otherwise
We just make sure there’s bin space.

Watch out though a flaccid penis drawing next to all candidates bar one could mean a vote for the candidate without the artwork.😊

Signalbox · 19/05/2024 21:38

I’ll still be spoiling my vote. Fact is it’s counted. Someone’s taking notice.
