Woke change to England flag.

Surely flags are flags but no Nike did a 'playful update' adding trans colours to the England football kit.

Imagine changing the flag of others countries!

What is it with companies like Nike that they have to push trans down everyone's throats.

The England flag you say? Meh I'm Scottish I don't give a fuck about the English flag!

<Turns and runs>

<stops to catch breath and say>

But if they come for Scotland's flag I won't be happy.

KnickerlessParsons · 22/03/2024 17:55

found it! It’s the collar on the 2011 away kit and it’s also an ugly design that is unrecognisable as a St George’s cross (but at least it’s still in the recognisable England colour palette of red/white/blue)

Aren't England's colours red and white?

Red, white and blue are the colours of the U.K. flag, not England's.

Flag yes, kit no.

Home kit is red and away kit is blue but for some unfathomable reason they’ve mixed the two colours into an ugly purple for this new away kit.

Here’s a quote re: the 2011 kit, from an interview with the designer:

PurpleBugz · 22/03/2024 18:03

I don't really care why they changed it. You just can't change another countries flag.

Boiledbeetle · 22/03/2024 18:05

I will say the way they've done it it reminds me of the signs you see outside pharmacies more than the England flag

TathingScinsel · 22/03/2024 18:06

Saville’s multiple little coloured crosses were ‘exclusively available at Harvey Nichols’, rather than part of a national team kit:

https://hypebeast.com/2011/2/umbro-modern-england-collection-by-peter-saville

They were supposed to piss people off, and they did (which is fine, British fashion has a rich history of being provacative)

Bit weird for 2024 commentators to rewrite history, declaring no one was bothered in 2011 (nor for the 2012 Olympics) because clearly they were bothered.

To quote Saville himself, ‘They fucking hated it’.

But the designs were on the national team kit too, around the shoulder area.

You keep posting the 2012-13 strip. This one is 2011-12, which the multi-coloured crosses around the shoulder area

The flag is always being messed with. Adding text and symbols
Its a design

I really can't get worked up about it.

You sound triggered 🤣

I posted a link to the 2011 football kits archive.

However, I do admit that even using the official archive link I was unable to identify these tiny blobs as coloured crosses!

They were definitely controversial in 2011 tho, ‘They fucking hated it’

And just to confirm it was an actual kit that England played in, here:

(You probably need to zoom a little but the multi coloured crosses are visible).

Jux · 22/03/2024 18:27

If it's not red cross on white background then it's nothing to do with St George or England. It's just a cross; whoopdidoo, nothing to see here.

FictionalCharacter · 22/03/2024 18:30

If it isn’t red on white it isn’t the cross of St George, so it isn’t the England flag.

I have no doubt that some hated it in 2011, but it certainly wasn’t a big news story.

Guess it’s an election year this time, and sometimes these things catch fire on social media and other times they don’t.

2011/12 was probably before the days of anti-woke hand-wringing too.

ScholesPanda · 22/03/2024 18:47

I guess the proof of the pudding will be in the eating- if people don't like it, they won't buy it. I assume Nike exist to make money, so if they're hit in the pocket they won't be happy.

AzureNewt · 22/03/2024 18:51

I see Jason Manford; who has apparently been leading this charge, thinks England should ditch Nike and go back to Umbro….who were the ones that did the 2011 kit with the multi coloured crosses.

PurpleBugz · 22/03/2024 18:03

Well I bring good news - no-one is changing the country's flag. England's flag remains St George's Cross as it has been for some time.

How it's coloured in on sports kit makes no difference.

Do I? I havent given it a second thought. It was just in active threads?

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 22/03/2024 19:10

The English Football Association are the customer, Nike are the designers and manufacturers.

Nike gave them lots of options based on the brief they were given and the FA chose which design and message they wanted.

This came from a former Nike European branding manager on the radio earlier. Nike don't unilaterally put out national team uniforms.

It makes sense when you think about it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 23/03/2024 01:29

What's your definition of "woke" @Careforcarers?

OnlyLoveCanBreakYourHeart · 22/03/2024 09:30

Your average footie lad is not going to like this!

Exactly and not £ 125 .

Combattingthemoaners · 23/03/2024 06:35

Northernsouloldies · 23/03/2024 04:35

Exactly and not £ 125 .

You are saying exactly to the quote “the average footie lad will not like this.” There is so many issues with that statement:

  1. What is an average “footie lad?”
  2. Is that who we want football to be purely aimed at?
  3. What would an average “footie lad” not like? The flag colour? the fact it’s apparently for the gays or trans? (It isn’t) The fact the away kit is purple? What exactly?
Northernsouloldies · 23/03/2024 06:38

Have you ever been to a football match, much of the chants are of an enlightened nature to say the least and that's as much explanation as I can be bothered with.
