Woke change to England flag.

Surely flags are flags but no Nike did a 'playful update' adding trans colours to the England football kit.

Imagine changing the flag of others countries!

What is it with companies like Nike that they have to push trans down everyone's throats.

the colour is awful. purple is the quintessential "blended" colour in graphic design, which is why they've used it. and the side panels are horribly bad. like a bad 80's sofa.

it's all blatantly rainbow flag inspired DEI rubbish, and we all know whose the single biggest voice in that movement is.

Those side panels my goodness and the purple

It looks like a DEI briefing to me

It looks absolutely nothing like the rainbow flag.

Not the classic Rainbow, no, but it does have a whiff of the newer Progress flag about it.

The 🏳️‍🌈 is much more aesthetic (as the kids are wont to say) than the progress flag, which is an ugly mishmash of a variety of other concepts and flags.

Woke change to England flag.
Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/03/2024 13:05

The "progress pride" flag has been in use about 5 minutes! Not "since the 1990s".

TathingScinsel · 22/03/2024 13:06

Blame the BBC for that corker! The addition of the purple circle seems about a week old but then time IS speeding up as I age.

Is it Xmas again already?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/03/2024 13:07

There was no widespread use of the term LGBT either. It was "the gay community" "gay rights". Sometimes LGB. My red brick university had recently changed to have an "LGBsoc" when I started there in the late 90s.

TathingScinsel · 22/03/2024 13:08

Actually, TBF the BBC were probs referring to the 🏳️‍🌈 and Google condensed the text for the old flag with the illustration for the new flag. I’ll go find the whole article.

Isitovernow123 · 22/03/2024 13:10

Imagine the outrage if smoke had changed the colours of the Stars and Stripe!

I also don’t think it’s a woke thing, just someone who is either thick as shit or done deliberately against the flag of St George.

Brefugee · 22/03/2024 13:10

for all the "it doesn't matter, it's only a piece of cloth" are you England football fans? do you buy the kits? Are you interested at all in football?

Colours for sports people who follow a team are really important. Hence the absolute howls of outrage at the new German away strip for the Euros (which is magenta, like their sponsor)

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/03/2024 13:11

I imagine that the whole article documents the history of the "progress pride flag" and what they are talking about there is the rainbow flag, but that clipped bit of text that describes the article falsely (by design or otherwise) suggests that the "progress pride flag" is something with a long history rather than an ugly makeover of a classic civil rights symbol. Which doesn't grasp the point of the rainbow as including everyone.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/03/2024 13:12

Yes @TathingScinsel I've cross posted with you as took me longer to compose my post!

Sylver75 · 22/03/2024 13:13

That's not a flag. Where's the white part? Is it rectangular? It's a motif, not a flag. They'd make a headline out of anything to get people going.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/03/2024 13:13

In the U.K. I think a large part of why it was adopted was because people adopted a rainbow as a symbol of hope and the NHS during the Covid pandemic.

Why didn’t they just say that the St George flag would no longer be printed on the shirts? At least then they would have been honest about it. Instead, we have a multi coloured design of a cross.

As for the side panels…. 🙄

TathingScinsel · 22/03/2024 13:17

To be charitable if your main interaction with flags has been all the various tumblr-origin flags of the last few years, which are constantly tinkered with to cater to smaller and smaller subgroups, you might well feel a bit baffled when a bunch of people outside of your social ingroup kick off about a tiny recoloured flag on a football shirt?

Whereas in football culture, colours and badges have fixed meanings, to the point where a colour name is used a a personal descriptor, eg Manchester United fans are Reds and City fans are Blues.

hayless · 22/03/2024 13:19

Hate it. Pretty basic tenet of national football is a kit with your flag on it.

No other country would stand for a 'playful update' of its national symbols.

I also find it nasty that a large brand is so keen to provoke and exploit national divisions. There's something incredibly mean and low about that.

I also find the endless whinging about Britain extremely tiresome. No, it's not perfect. But tell me, where is this perfect place you'd like to live?

Fixerupper77 · 22/03/2024 13:22

YABU to link GB News.

I cant see anywhere online that states this is a trans issue.

oldwhyno · 22/03/2024 13:22

Combattingthemoaners · 22/03/2024 12:59

It looks absolutely nothing like the rainbow flag.

it's literally multicolour parallel stripes with angle breaks.

Oneofthesurvivors · 22/03/2024 13:24

I'd give more of a shit if it was going to be affordable for most football fans

TathingScinsel · 22/03/2024 13:30

The price is definitely controversial!

EasternStandard · 22/03/2024 13:31

It still looks like a DEI mess even if you don’t buy one

Wonder if they can drop the whole design

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 22/03/2024 13:33

Why is this causing such a problem?

This was the team GB Olympic strip for London 2012. I don't remember such a fuss about the colours then.

Woke change to England flag.
TathingScinsel · 22/03/2024 13:33

Doubt it, Nike probably have multiple thousands being made in foreign sweatshops already.

Because we didn't blame everything we didn't like on woke people back then.
