Woke change to England flag.

Surely flags are flags but no Nike did a 'playful update' adding trans colours to the England football kit.

Imagine changing the flag of others countries!

What is it with companies like Nike that they have to push trans down everyone's throats.

I don't see trans colours. I see navy, light blue and purple, and on the vertical line, red and pink.

Trans colours are pale pink, pale blue and white I believe.

They said they playfully mixed the colours in. So not a complete change but a blurring with the pink and pale blue to 'unite and inspire'.

It's strange changing colours on a country flag though especially when worn to represent the country at a sport. Not aware of any other flags not used as they are.

Purple is actually the colour of The Suffragettes I believe so a nod to Feminism

What's this got to do with FWR?

OP made a (tenuous) connection with transgenderisim.

I heard about it on the radio before seeing the picture. I actually like the logo but let's face it, it's so far removed from what the St George's flag looks like, it can't be said to be an updated version of it.

Let's walk this through:

St George's flag: single-colour red vertical/horizontal cross on a white rectangular background.

Nike's logo for England shirt: no rectangular or coloured background at all; a cross made up of three stripes on each, spur with a total of 6 different colours; the four spurs meeting in the middle in a triangular junction.

If you saw it anywhere other than an England-themed article, you wouldn't associate with the St George's Cross. The real issue is that it isn't the St George's flag at all, although according to the radio item it hasn't always been the case that the flag was included on the football strip - that's a fairly recent introduction.

Zodfa · 22/03/2024 09:37

It looks vaguely reminiscent of the trans flag to those of us who are overexposed to such things, but in reality it's just some colours in stripes and it's probably too much to assign it some kind of covert political meaning.

Changing the colour of the flag as part of the kit design, whilst odd in my opinion, is not a new thing: see https://twitter.com/AgainstLeague3/status/1771076773691703414, https://twitter.com/tbolt87/status/1771077464426475887.

Its a piece of material thats all. Lets not get hysterical about a piece of material or we will end up saluting it every morning in school like soem places is The US do.
I dislike DM and everything they stand for but I really dont get the drama over a flag

Dislike DM? What's DM?

We don't salute it. It's a flag that represents a team at a sporting competition, in this case football. No one's getting hysterical, people have views and can express them.

Good for you. My dcs always like to buy the England shirts for the big tournaments ie they are actual potential customers and they don't want a shirt with that stupid flag. They aren't even English btw!

Perhaps because it was Nike who said its to 'unite and inspire'. Unite and inspire whom.

I’ve no idea why the colours are as they are beyond ‘unite and inspire’ but they’ve got it wrong

Some won’t care at all, but people who care about football probably will hence the backlash

Underthinker · 22/03/2024 09:43

BestZebbie · 22/03/2024 09:28

Tbf, the England flag is about as unwoke an item as you can get in the modern age, given it derives directly from the flags of the Crusaders at Acre. I'd be fine with the whole thing changing to another colour (though I'd probably select colours that represented something about the country as a whole, like blue for the sea around it etc)

The Finnish may have something to say about that :)

MagpiePi · 22/03/2024 09:43

Is DM Dylan Mulvaney?

I don't understand how changing a flag is supposed to unite and inspire. Surely the flag as it is already does the uniting and inspiring?

Hoppinggreen · 22/03/2024 09:44

If they dont like the shirt then they can not buy it, they will survive. Its not a shirt that makes football enjoyable (although to be fair I am not sure what does)
DM is a very high profile and very annoying Trans person who makes awful videos about "being a girl" and was referenced upthread.
And I never said anyone here salutes the flag, I said lets not get to the stage where we do that like they do in The US.

makeanddo · 22/03/2024 09:45

I really don't understand why everyone is saying 'arghhh look what Nine did'. Surely Nike just did what they are told by the people designing and ordering the kit or do Nike require no sign off before kits are produced?

Surely it's the FA that would have signed it off, you know that group that can't seem to decide if they should ban men from playing in women's teams? That bunch of self serving old white men?

Wonder how long before the finger pointing starts ......

yetanotherusernameAgain · 22/03/2024 09:46

I don't understand how changing a flag is supposed to unite and inspire.

Well it's united a lot of people in their outrage and inspired them to post on social media. So in a way it's working, but probably not in a way Nike intended.

I predict people who buy shirts won't give a fiddly fuck. This happens regularly with national & team shirts. Complaints that they've moved from traditional designs, they're using rival teams' colours, designs don't make sense, there's pink on the men's shirts (that's a favourite) etc, etc. Never seems to make much difference to sales..

I'd forgotten his name so didn't get the DM but, I do now.

Well lots of people like football around the world so if they get upset about nike adding pink and blue to the original red to unite and inspire then a few more people talk about it.

Ha yes

CroftonWillow · 22/03/2024 09:59

It's no longer the England flag once the colours are changed. Does seem they're trying to make some sort of point.

TathingScinsel · 22/03/2024 09:59

Looks more like the Bisexual flag than the Trans flag.

Woke change to England flag.
CrispEater2000 · 22/03/2024 10:00

Nike have said it's inspired by the colours of the 1966 training kit. But that was woke as well.

Also, while most nations play in the colours of their country's flag England play in the FA's colours of white and blue. The flag on the kit is neither here nor there.

Sorry Op. I was attempting to quote another poster. DM refers to the daily mail. Apparently if you don't think a country's flag should be changed you are a raving mad daily mail reader.
