Woke change to England flag.

Surely flags are flags but no Nike did a 'playful update' adding trans colours to the England football kit.

Imagine changing the flag of others countries!

What is it with companies like Nike that they have to push trans down everyone's throats.

Whatever it is, an attempt "to unite and inspire" has turned into "to divide and alienate". That's a fail.

It’s a very peculiar way to approach a ‘unify around a national sports team’ design brief, that’s for sure.

oneinamillieon · 22/03/2024 12:29

@oldwhyno i don't know or care?? it's the tiniest redesign, get over it. sound like you guys are the "woke" ones

Brefugee · 22/03/2024 12:30

tbh I'd be VERY interested to see what happened if Nike mucked around with the colours of the USA flag.

Am patiently waiting to see what they do to the German one if the deal over kid goes ahead.

Brefugee · 22/03/2024 12:27

but the English flag is a red cross on a white background. A sportswear company doesn't have the right to change the colours and then tell us that's our flag. They can put a multicoloured cross in there if they want, but they can't call it the England flag.

It has to do with "Trans" because the company, Nike, told us it has.

I haven't seen any statement from Nike saying it's trans related. Please could you link to it?

If you don’t care about a topic, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to step aside and leave it to those who do care to discuss it?

I don’t care about loads of topics posted on mumsnet, but it would be a terrible waste of my time to post my lack of interest on all the threads I’m not interested in

Unless when you say ‘I don’t care’ you mean ‘so you stop caring and shut up’?

Which seems a bit… authoritarian?

you care enough to be commenting on a post about it. get over it.

It's not the "tiniest redesign" at all, it retains only a vague suggestion of the England Flag. And the reason they bothered is to make a political statement. With flags it's ALWAYS a political statement.

TathingScinsel · 22/03/2024 12:39

Actually, I retract my previous comment. It turns out Nike are indeed promoting unity, Left and Right party leaders are unified against Nike’s crappy design.

Where has Nike said it’s to do with trans? I have tried to find this online and can’t find a single legitimate quote.

feellikeanalien · 22/03/2024 12:42

At the end of the day if people who like wearing football shirts buy it then Nike don't care . They like controversy. However I feel that your average football fan is not going to be impressed so they may well have shot themselves in the foot commercially. If it doesn't sell then I think you might see the "old traditional" design being reintroduced. This is a typical Nike move but I do agree that they would be unlikely to even consider it in other countries.

Nike directly. Not keen on ‘mixing reds and blues of the past’ to make purple (very UKIP! 😆) but it’s good to read that after athlete feedback they have changed the shape of the women’s kit (more room at bust, hip and bicep): https://www.englandfootball.com/articles/2024/Mar/18/england-mens-womens-para-new-nike-kits-revealed-for-2024-20241803

England get fresh look for 2024

The new England shirts to be worn by our men's, women's and para teams from March have been revealed

Brefugee · 22/03/2024 12:46

ok hands up - seems Nike haven't explicitly said anything about the colours.

But it is utter guf and the choice of colours is batshit. The England flag already unifies England fans. Because it is recognisable.

I hope Nike go bust. Because i really hate the idea that they are going to supply the German team when there is a perfectly good sports clothing supplier in Germany.

Again: would like to see them change the colours of the US Flag in the name of unity. That will be entertaining to watch

TathingScinsel · 22/03/2024 12:49

I’ve just done a ‘search on page’ of the England press release and nowhere does it mention ‘flag’ ‘cross’ or ‘St George’. It seems odd that it’s been omitted, especially as changing a national flag is actually a big deal (but not totally off limits if you have a reason for it).

I’d say it’s because no such comment exists linking the flag to any community- it has been made up by the right. Why does everything have to have a meaning? Why can’t they just say purple looked aesthetically pleasing? Haha. I like the kits! They’re extortionate prices though. Also pleased they listened to the female players.

TathingScinsel · 22/03/2024 12:54

My eyes!

’So team, we’re looking for an innovative way to combine maroon, olive, off white and turquoise to use up the fabric dye overstock of unpopular shades, inexplicably bought in bulk by Sebastian when we were all working from home in 2020, what have you got for me?’

Woke change to England flag.
crunchermuncher · 22/03/2024 12:54

"Why does everything have to have meaning"

Because nobody spunks thousands on design for 'no reason'.

Flags have meaning. They are political by their very nature.

If it literally was just a bit of old fabric, no one would care.

Also, there are some very rude posters out today, I feel like I've wandered onto AIBU.

Combattingthemoaners · 22/03/2024 12:54

I have found this lovely quote by Joey Barton though: “Trying to sneak that Woke, Gay communist nonsense onto the England national team jersey. It’ll be to appease all of the lesbians who play for the @Lionesses.”

It sounds like the start of a terrible right wing joke….a woke, a gay and a communist walk into a bar. What an idiot that man is!

The out LGBTQ+ England Lionesses playing in the 2023 Women's World Cup final

Several England Lionesses will still be scoring one for LGBTQ visibility in football during the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

I quite like the colour of the shirts but don’t like the side panels at all…

https://www.footyheadlines.com/2023/08/nike-england-euro-2024-away-kit-prediction-based-on-colors.html

the colour is awful. purple is the quintessential "blended" colour in graphic design, which is why they've used it. and the side panels are horribly bad. like a bad 80's sofa.

it's all blatantly rainbow flag inspired DEI rubbish, and we all know whose the single biggest voice in that movement is.

I’d love to be a fly on the wall if Barton is ever in the same room as the England Women.

I like to imagine a collective Paddington Stare with the energy of a furious sun.

It looks absolutely nothing like the rainbow flag.

Brefugee · 22/03/2024 12:59

IDK. I only have one England shirt and it has a red cross embroidered on it. That seems sensible for a shirt for a team representing the country?
The German shirt i have also has the Black, Red, Gold colours on. And the German Eagle which is their emblem - a quick look tells me the eagle (same design every time) is used on all shirts, but not always the colours especially the away shirts.

What about Scotland - do they put their colours on the shirts? The USA? tbh I'm only really interested in club football so i don't really care (the new England ones are ugly tho)

People on Twitter saying "but the 2012 Olympic gear was different shades of a blue Union Flag and nobody complained about that." except that Stella McCartney got absolutely ROASTED for it.

Haha he is pathetic. Like a teenage boy with a bruised ego whose only default criticism is “lesbian!!” Every time he sees a woman playing football.

JSMill · 22/03/2024 13:02

It's interesting that the German national team is using Nike. I'd read a lot of players are ditching Nike for other brands.

Dontcallmescarface · 22/03/2024 13:03

All this drama over a teeny tiny bit of cloth positioned where no-body will be able to see it, is ridiculous. It's not as if's not as if that "flag" has been hoisted above Buckingham Palace, it's on the back of a football shirt ffs. Some people really need to get a grip.
