This is massive - and long overdue

Anyone know if this (if they really mean it this time) will have an impact on the new more local gender identity clinics that are replacing GIDs?

From what I remember there’s been difficulty with those because all the clinicians from GIDs who were so hung ho about pushing kids down the pathway to irreversible changes were still wanting to do the same despite the Cass interim report. If the NHS is saying “No.” that presumably undermines their clinical position?

So what about young children under say age 5 that start puberty early - surely they should still be able to access the drugs until they reach puberty age?
There are cases of very early puberty where children need to be helped.

Always a bit of whataboutery...

God, that was fantastic. David Bell made ALL the points and wouldn't be talked over by Evan Davies. I recommend anyone who missed it to find it on catch up.

Any link? I am not UK based but I would love to hear what Dr Bell had to say.

ArabellaScott · 12/03/2024 17:29

NHS England is #1 trending on X. And still nothing on bbc.com

@ArabellaScott Unfortunately, I don't think between last year's announcement and now they have decided that there's no evidence. From what I read at the time, the lack of evidence was already there, but prescriptions continued just because there was infight between practitioners. Can anyone confirm?

PotteringPondering · 12/03/2024 17:25

Just to confirm: this was the lead story on BBC Radio 4's PM programme presented by Evan Davies. He had Hannah Barnes explaining the background, then Dr David Bell (ex Tavistock) explaining why the whole GIDS thing was a shitshow and why this new development to ban puberty blockers is a good thing.

The programme will go on BBC Sounds within about an hour of it ending at 6pm. If you didn't hear it go out live, you must listen this evening on catch-up. David Bell was on fire.

Yes - kudos to the BBC for their honest reporting about this. Now maybe they'll take a look at the WPATH emerging scandal?

Re the BBC it's not even tucked away under their Health stories ie down a corridor, in an old filing cabinet, behind a door marked 'leopard' etc etc.

So it's with the lost episodes of Dr. Who then

Presumably if NHS England says no puberty blockers for the under 18's then they must comply.
If they're gender zealots, maybe they'll leave? (what a pity, never mind)

I can imagine all the trans activists will be losing their shit right now because Helen Webberley wasn’t invited on for balance.

DrBlackbird · 12/03/2024 17:35

Though ED really quite irritating. Kept bloody going on yes, but….

Thank god for David Bell. He was brilliant.

I've always wondered how anyone can undertake a clinical trial for drugs that serve to sterilise children, may affect their brain & bone development plus a host of other potential harmful impacts on young healthy bodies.
How on earth can you begin to argue for that?

From what I’ve read so far, it seems to be a combination of pushy parent groups like GIRES and Mermaids who claimed the NHS was killing their children by refusing blockers (and threatening to go private if NHS refused blockers), activists organising international conferences and meetings in the 2000s that kept harping on about the NHS being an outlier in not automatically starting children on blockers, and from 2010 onwards certain doctors finding treating children with blockers fascinating and thinking it good for their career to be involved with an internationally recognised 'best practice' clinic.

You can go to BBC sounds now and rewind to catch Dr Bell’s interview as PM is still running. As you say he was on🔥

Just happened to put on R4 in the car and was utterly astounded to hear this as the top story at 5pm! So pleased. David Bell and Hannah Barnes were excellent. Do we think Evan Davis is starting to get it? The piece was pretty good I thought. Any chance NHS Scotland are paying attention?

I guess that’s what I’m kind of hoping, MrsOverton! Just wondered if anyone has a more knowledgable opinion on whether that’s likely.

NHS Scotland had a meeting with Dr Cass late last year. I'm hopeful. The meeting was packed full of ideologues, though.

"children will receive an “holistic approach to care” from clinical experts in neurodiversity, paediatrics and mental health."

A much more sensible approach.

But...if "conversion therapy" includes trans, how can it be fully holistic?! But glad it's being stated as a goal

After the Cass interim report there was an interim policy that barred the routine use of puberty blockers for gender dysphoria in young people. There was still provision, outside of research, in “exceptional” cases.

This, I believe, is a permanent policy, partly informed by the consultation last autumn, and may go further than simply banning it as a routine treatment, though I can’t find the actual wording or any NHS source for the information in the news articles.

Poinsettiasarevile · 12/03/2024 17:53

Right ladies, dont get too excited. What will happen to lots of kids is they will wait until they are 17, when they can move to the adult service, where there will be no clinical trials, no follow up and way fewer assessments.

This is why it is so important to gig for the up coming high court case which is specifically about these 17 y.os.

Please, if you have any pennies to spare, go to crowd justice and search for Anna Castle.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 12/03/2024 17:54

I just caught the very end of the Dr Bell interview as I got in the car. I’d not seen the news. Amazing stuff.

Boiledbeetle · 12/03/2024 17:57

There's going to be uproar! (Wonders if the uproar will have happened before i get to the end of the posts??)
