In most of the places that celebrate, the idea is that women take over everything for the day. So usually in those places, at 11.11am on the Thursday before Shrove Tuesday (it is all related to Easter and Karneval) women dressed as old crones, storm the town hall, cut off the Mayor's tie and then take over all the offices. In reality they now just dress in fancy dress, storm the building and everyone eats doughnuts and gets wazzocked.

It is my favourite day of the year to go to work on the train because it is EXACTLY the same as always, dark, cold and the usual groups standing around looking tired, grumpy, having a smoke, scrolling on their phones, briefcase by their feet. But there will be groups of people dressed like cows, Sailors, Penguins, doctors... anything. But just behaving totally normally because Altweiber actually starts at 11:11 and not a second before.

After 14 years away, I kind of miss "Weiberfasnet", but the "Cutting ties" symbolism, for me, became more obvious in English as the "Krawatten abschneiden" doesn't quite have the double meaning.

As a complete OT: Will Brexit in eight weeks and will have to check if my new area actually celebrates carneval.

PurpleSparkledPixie The same is true of the GRA: it does not regulate private relationships. It speaks to an individuals relationship with the state. It creates no duty on others to refer to someone with a GRC by their acquired gender. No 'breach' has occurred here either.

This might feel slightly off-topic but wrt the individual relationship to the state, I heartily recommend this if you've not already read James C Scott's Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed IANAL but it's in line with Foran's arguments.

I'm a bit confused. He is blaming the Tories for stealing his phone?

I’m surprised JKR didn’t get the blame.

RethinkingLife · 08/03/2024 16:19

I lost my phone is beginning to sound like the dog ate my homework.

How many tribunal attendees phones have been lost, stolen, dropped overboard...

Not only that, to adapt a phrase, to lose a phone may be regarded as a misfortune, to lose a phone that you somehow never backed up looks like carelessness.

He said him
He said them
Neither she
Nor she
So let's stop the whole debate

WallaceinAnderland · 08/03/2024 17:31

CR was 25 when he was interviewed, so 22 when he binned off the Far Right & 23 when he set up the Future Freedom website with other people who’d left the Far Right. (Worth noting, though, that there’s no trace of that even on the Wayback Machine 🤨) So CR was radicalised online with his real life circumstances serving to exacerbate issues; & he got out before his brain was fully cooked.

And yet TRAs insist that children as young as 12 are old enough to decide their own sex, should be immediately affirmed and given puberty blockers.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 08/03/2024 17:38

It is most unlucky for phones when their owners are involved in litigation, and this phenomenon isn't solely confined to employment tribunals. For example, Rebekah Vardy's agent dropped her own phone over the side of a boat, irretrievably losing it in the North Sea. As a result, it and its messages naturally couldn't be submitted as court evidence in the court case of Rebekah Vardy and Colleen Rooney.

Yes, it's very clear when you're not reading it.

There is a strong psycho-acoustic phenomenon whereby you can hear almost anything in an unclear sound or white noise if you are told in advance (or have written down) what you are supposed to be hearing.
So any subtitles will tend to override your aural judgement.
If it really matters to you exactly what was said, you have to listen without reading.

Some TRAs are accusing JKR of 'wielding wealth' but Caolan's got her back

JKR: There was no wielding of wealth, no threats to sue, no lawyers involved or demands made. @CaolanRob apologised without any pressure from me or anyone connected with me. He took responsibility and made amends, which I consider admirable behaviour.

https://twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1766125134102905016

Caolan's response: This situation was my fault. I wasn’t threatened and genuinly feel terrible for what I said. That’s it. JK has restored my faith in humanity completely and I’m in awe at her response to this.

IW has been very quiet today.

Apart from the obligatory Happy IWD to all (except the bigots).

I expect the ‘bigots’ are the actual intended beneficiaries of IWD.

WallaceinAnderland · 08/03/2024 18:16

Yes, noticeably much less tweeting from IW today.

WallaceinAnderland · 08/03/2024 18:17

Or should that be fewer tweets?

It's been a long week

Joanne's dog ate my homework?

Which one, Brontë or Emma?

@WallaceinAnderland
One of the most egregious contradictions is to be in seen in Scotland - embracing WPATH & pushing for insane measures in the Bill Westminster blocked; while the 2022 sentencing guidelines mean a rapist was given community service (before his conviction was quashed) because of course at 17 the poor wee dote couldn’t have known he wasn’t to rape a 13 year old 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

JKR vs IW

Blimey. That's a turnabout.

I still maintain that calling a woman a putrid cunt would not slip off the tongue of another man quite so easily. But maybe he has mitigating personality flaws

Datun · 08/03/2024 18:39

... on the other hand, I can't help thinking that if you identify as a journalist, JKR being on side is preferable to her not being.

Evening Standard is reporting that Northumberland Police decided that the reporting didn't meet the criminal threshold

Quelle surprise!

SirChenjins · 08/03/2024 19:21

I’m sure it gave Northumberland Police a good laugh - IW is quite the comical character with all his keyboard posturing.

That's a real surprise, given that the police have automatically harassed women in the past on the back of any old complaint from a TRA.

I hope this restraint is repeated with women who don't have the wherewithal to sue them for infringement of human rights.

Rainbowshit · 08/03/2024 19:29

I for one am gutted that they're not going to arrest JKR. I suspect she is too. The court case would have been phenomenal. Boo.
