I really like the thought of this, though:

There’s also Weiberfastnacht, a subversive German festival practice dating back to the Middle Ages in which women are handed control of the community and are free to roam the streets cutting off men’s ties.

Delightfully symbolic! 😂

Yes, totally happens. My sister had a colleague who used to wear his MILs latest Christmas offering to work that day (his wife approved).

But to be quite honest, I never quite got the symbolism until I saw the "cutting off men's ties" written in English.

Had a breakdown means broke down, presumably.

I took it as more of a shit flinging meltdown. I think he got a slap on the wrist from Byline and told to apologise for the personal abuse. I don't buy his contrition particularly.

"But, I'm remembering his previous comments about putting a barbed wire fence in the channel to stop migrants, and how gay people are all deviant."
I think those are the work of the one and only IW?

No, it was this chap, in an interview with someone else I don't know. Saying how gay men spread aids and banging on about migrants.

Although I'm sure Willoughby has said equally awful things.

Oh wait, you're right Bez.

This chap did bang on about gay men, but I think it was Willoughby who talked about the fence.

Frankly they all merge into one, if I'm honest

BezMills · 08/03/2024 12:23

yeah I'm not surprised they blend a bit! since I've been here just a short time I've seen the same same new old posters making the same same new old arguments maybe 20 times, and I sense you've been patiently dealing with this for time.

Mollyollydolly · 08/03/2024 12:26

I'm glad he apologised, I don't want him to lose his career over some twitter meltdown and JK Rowling has of course handled it perfectly.
Bit of background which was apparent on twitter last night, Peter Jukes who's the boss at Byline had his phone stolen in the street, horrible thing to happen to anyone. At the time it appears he was looking at these tweets, it was BEFORE the c**t tweets. Anyway Peter was defending him saying he'd been piled on by Rowling and Elon Musk. When the very offensive tweets appears I tweeted Peter saying it was totally unacceptable behaviour. Lots of tweets deleted this morning and I suspect the lad had a rocket put up his arse.
Anyway, all good, JK Rowling comes out of it looking like what she is, a gracious human being.

IcakethereforeIam · 08/03/2024 12:28

I don't know if he said him or them (fwiw I heard him), what he absolutely did not say was her. He and IW, i think the word was 'bonded', kindred spirits and all that.

I lost my phone is beginning to sound like the dog ate my homework.

How many tribunal attendees phones have been lost, stolen, dropped overboard...

Same here - he's given himself a fright.

He's lucky that JKR isn't vindictive.

Peter's so woke this was his response to having his phone snatched in the street. St Peter, unless it's calling JK Rowling names obviously.

I'm a bit confused. He is blaming the Tories for stealing his phone?

Mollyollydolly · 08/03/2024 12:50

Yes. He feels sorry for the person on a bike who mugged him because it's all the Tories fault, or something.

IcakethereforeIam · 08/03/2024 12:51

Bit of a non sequitur.

I think it's plausible there's at least some discrimination against 'trans' people. There are always arseholes who will bully people they perceive as different.

The stats on 'hate crime' and 'transphobia' are all muddied, however, due to concerted campaigns to get more reported, including misgendring on Twitter, etc. The police themselves commented on this artificial inflation of stats.

have only got this far. But i wonder how on earth anyone can tell that crimes (which i don't doubt happen to trans people, and i don't doubt that sometimes it is about them being trans) when the police don't record sex and gender identity (of perpetrators, in any case)

And since the police seem to say, with alarming regularity, that they record the gender the person says they are at the time of arrest, how the heck can we know that the (maybe) trans victim has been attacked by the member of a specific sex class? Frankly? since these things (sex and gender identity) aren't recorded, crime against trans people can't be recorded. And the temptation, I'm afraid, is to say "hoist by your own petards"

Backlash from calling JKR a c**t, not once but twice, may have been a wake up call for Caolan and one he badly needed. People like IW drag others into their hatred and chaos and bring them down to their own level. He's not worth losing a career over and hopefully Caolan can see the error of his ways a little more clearly. Associating with and supporting nasty, misogynistic males who have threatened to kidnap women will never do anyone good or lift them up.

Unfortunately attention on social media has become such an addiction young people are easily swayed into spouting whatever rubbish will give them the biggest boost. Hatred of women is the topic of the moment so I can see why he may have fallen under India's influence so much.

Hopefully he can see how a genuine and gracious woman actually behaves and learn from it.

NitroNine · 08/03/2024 14:04

<weeps in lost carefully-crafted post>

So Caolan did indeed say some truly heinous things about gay people - but his objections seem to have been rooted in concerns shared by posters here about eg fetish wear at Pride. You can almost hear where he’s been radicalised from that rational point:
In an another video – this time an interview with radical right vlogger, Millennial Woes – Robertson cites an unknown report alleging that "60 percent of gays in the UK admit to having over 500 partners", adding, "[Gays] have literally shit all over all of the people who fought for their rights to be able to exist by behaving like this." The only record which correlates to this is a 1978 sociological study regularly shared on Christian websites.
If his personal experience of the dating scene also made him feel the above number was true when he just wanted to settle down & be seen as “normal”? (I know I’m failing to express my point well/properly & it is very frustrating but hopefully someone understands enough of what I mean to pick it up…)
Certainly it would be really interesting to hear him talk about what he was trying to express there; if he did experience any homophobia within the Far Right movement; & whether he feels some of it came from not having fully accepted his own sexuality (knowing you’re gay from a young age ≠ being ok with it).

He talks about his online radicalisation in this Jewish Chronicle article. Obviously one must consider whether the focus on antisemitism might be him playing to audience or a journalistic/editorial decision, but it is interesting reading.

The NYT article^ JKR tweeted at him (& I think a PP mentioned?) is also interesting & makes me think chucking him in same bucket with IW is a mistake. CR was 25 when he was interviewed, so 22 when he binned off the Far Right & 23 when he set up the Future Freedom website with other people who’d left the Far Right. (Worth noting, though, that there’s no trace of that even on the Wayback Machine 🤨) So CR was radicalised online with his real life circumstances serving to exacerbate issues; & he got out before his brain was fully cooked. IW is late fifties & apparently resolutely committed to fascism (ample evidence of racism, antisemitism, authoritarianism, [a particular brand of] misogyny & an absolute lust for compelled speech already provided ITT).

The language he used towards JKR was, without question, utterly unacceptable - & 28 is far too old for such a teenage-style tantrum. (Not that it would be ok for a teenager to tweet what CR did either!) I’m just disinclined to write him off: I think he has the potential to Get It.

Right, but why do women have to work so bloody hard to 'understand' these men, who jump at the first chance they get to call them putrid cunts.

All she did was offer him a mildly sarcastic comment.

Michael Foran has put together a good thread on why Windy doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

And why JKR, on the other hand, may well have a case for criminal harassment.

https://x.com/michaelpforan/status/1765824427978108999?s=46&t=fMjCB4vFfh_N6mYE72mhHw

The same is true of the GRA: it does not regulate private relationships. It speaks to an individuals relationship with the state. It creates no duty on others to refer to someone with a GRC by their acquired gender. No 'breach' has occurred here either.

I can only see this bit, but is this true? Does this mean we have been conned into saying she instead of he? Apologies for going slightly off topic.

WinterTrees · 08/03/2024 14:29

The comments below his apology and JK's generous response are mostly really supportive, acknowledging the courage it takes to apologise properly and the positives, for both sides, of being able to both give and accept apologies.

Katy Montgomerie is the exception. Their contribution: 'FML this is so pathetic.'

(I amended that pronoun in the light of current hairtrigger reporting.)

In most of the places that celebrate, the idea is that women take over everything for the day. So usually in those places, at 11.11am on the Thursday before Shrove Tuesday (it is all related to Easter and Karneval) women dressed as old crones, storm the town hall, cut off the Mayor's tie and then take over all the offices. In reality they now just dress in fancy dress, storm the building and everyone eats doughnuts and gets wazzocked.

It is my favourite day of the year to go to work on the train because it is EXACTLY the same as always, dark, cold and the usual groups standing around looking tired, grumpy, having a smoke, scrolling on their phones, briefcase by their feet. But there will be groups of people dressed like cows, Sailors, Penguins, doctors... anything. But just behaving totally normally because Altweiber actually starts at 11:11 and not a second before.
