I had never heard of this guy before today (I am not a fan of stand up comedy) but I do listen to the political podcast The Newsagents, and they had him on as a guest. He sounded like a sensible person until he suddenly started talking complete faux-naïve bollocks about the trans issue. Something about how how boring it would be if everyone in society was expected to be the same, or some such stuff, and therefore anyone who opposes trans rights is being "boring" as well as wrong. Anyone else hear that? Is this guy in general a TRA or just stupid?

I hadn't noticed any discussion of trans on The Newsagents up to now (but I don't listen religiously every day, just most days). I don't know where the presenters stand on this, if anywhere. I'm quite a fan of Emily Maitliss, I would really disappointed if she is captured.

Can’t stand him since he was on Alan Davies’ ‘As Yet Untitled’ saying that women didn’t seem to realise that he is bisexual which is a shame as he loves ‘smashing puss’

Meowandthen · 26/02/2024 20:32

Lysett is a bitch. I know the people who employed him for the Qatar gig and he had zero issues working in the ME then. Didn’t question anything. Was just snarky and less than polite.

He couldn’t give a flying fuck about the rights of women either.

ThisHonestQuail · 24/02/2024 18:49

Stupid because he has a different opinion to you? Why don’t you just Google him to see what he’s about?

He’s very very switched on actually. I listened to the podcast earlier and whilst I don’t agree with his political opinions, I fully respect what he does. He’s openly pansexual and pro LGBT, hence his comments.

Edited

Well, calling people boring because they reject gender ideology is pretty stupid though, wouldn't you agree?

delphi13 · 26/02/2024 21:41

Alchemistress · 24/02/2024 19:06

I think he's very smart, very switched on and I like a lot of his comedy. I really enjoyed the Travel Man series he did when he took over from Richard Ayoade.

I always raise an eyebrow at him defining as Pansexual as from what I can see he is almost exclusively into guys - he flirts outrageously with men but the energy with women is virtually non existent. I'm only going by what I see on TV but his humour is quite camp and Carry On- ish. No problem with that if you like a certain amount of oo-err missus type innuendo.

I sigh inwardly at Gay men getting behind the trans bandwagon because it generally affects them not one jot.
A/ they're Men and
B/ Trans Men are just not accepted into male spaces

So it's very easy to go Yay Trans! when your day to day isn't changed in any meaningful way.

He has talked recently about falling in love and having a girlfriend.

delphi13 · 26/02/2024 21:46

aquarimum · 25/02/2024 08:23

I think he’s your stereotypical gay man who hates women and hides it under a veneer of civility and “I’m so cool”.

He's not gay though. He has a girlfriend.

FrancescaContini · 26/02/2024 22:37

I love Emily. I wonder if she’s here somewhere? I think she did an excellent report a while ago on the Tavistock 🤔

dunBle · 27/02/2024 02:19

I get the impression that Emily is TERF adjacent but not a hardliner.

Alchemistress · 27/02/2024 06:52

@delphi13

Could you link me to where he's talked about a girlfriend? I'd be interested to read/ listen to that.

Thanks.

theDudesmummy · 27/02/2024 07:23

Good news about Emily it seems

He's not gay though. He has a girlfriend.

Where's the evidence of that?

Really?

SheilaFentiman · 27/02/2024 07:41

Why shouldn’t Joe Lycett be pansexual, why do you think he’s just saying this to be on a bandwagon? If he is attracted to people who identify as male, female or non-binary, then he is pansexual.

Leaving aside that this board doesn’t typically believe in NB as a concept - fine - millions of people sincerely do, and so why do you doubt Joe L is one of them?

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2024 07:51

Pansexual is bisexual with the arrogance to believe that everyone else is attracted to others in the same way as you and if they aren't they should be.

I don't have a lot of time for it. It's unattractive as a personality trait funnily enough. It pretends to be open minded but in practice is really closed minded.

Sex matters to a lot of people for lots of different reasons. The ability to have children, the mutuality of the same sex. Liking the physicality in a particular way. And so many more. The inability to see and understand this, is tone deaf.

FrancescaContini · 27/02/2024 07:56

dunBle · 27/02/2024 02:19

I get the impression that Emily is TERF adjacent but not a hardliner.

She wouldn’t be allowed to be too openly hard line in her NN role but she’s doing a good job. Her thoughts as shown above are quite clear.

CaramelMac · 27/02/2024 08:00

I’ve found the Newsagents to be really one sided on the trans subject, whenever it comes up it’s the ‘most vulnerable’ shtick. Listening to Lycet and Goodall it struck me that it’s just a way for middle class white people to class themselves as a ‘minority’ when he said he’s amplifying trans and non -binary voices in his show, god forbid he helps genuinely vulnerable people, much easier to find a man who is non-binary and stick him in to tick the diversity box!

BezMills · 27/02/2024 08:02

Being attracted to personality traits is fine, none of my beeswax, we probably all have traits we find attractive and less attractive in a partner.
Pansexual seems like considerably spicier than youw bisexual. Also fine, shrug.

The confidence to believe that women aren't interested because they think hes gay!

This is really grim. I wonder how any woman who’s ever had the pleasure (or not…) of going to bed with him feels about his use of such dehumanising and violent language? SMASHING??

FrancescaContini · 27/02/2024 12:50

I picture a Grant Mitchell-esque thug shouting, “I’m gonna SMASH your face in!” Nasty.

WitchyWitcherson · 27/02/2024 15:29

I've enjoyed Joe Lycett's comedy in the past and am disappointed to see some of the things he's said...growing paedos and "smashing puss" being two of the worst examples above 😡.

His comedy is "progressive and edgy" and, since it's currently "progressive and edgy" to say horribly misogynistic things, I'm sadly not surprised that he's said them.

It's convenient for him to close his eyes and ears to the debate surrounding gender ideology and pretend it's all about people not liking other people who are different to them. As pp's have said, it doesn't affect him in any way so why should he care - in fact, if he did start to care then it WOULD affect him due to 'getting cancelled'.

Additionally, as with many of the progressive edgy "leftist" men these days, listening to the boring "old type" of woman (you know, the ones with a vagina) is really uncool. Joe Lycett has an image to protect.

I stopped listening to the Newsagents podcast when I got fed up with hearing their own views on subjects. I'm really not interested in what they personally think.

theDudesmummy · 28/02/2024 11:04

Now you see, that's what I actually like about The Newsagents. You can get just news from lots of places but I like hearing people's personal takes and ideas/responses. I hadn't heard them touch on the trans issue before though. (As I said, I listen often, but not every day).

The few times I've listened I've found them self satisfied and tedious. I can't imagine having a misogynist twat like Joe Lycett on would have improved that.
