I had never heard of this guy before today (I am not a fan of stand up comedy) but I do listen to the political podcast The Newsagents, and they had him on as a guest. He sounded like a sensible person until he suddenly started talking complete faux-naïve bollocks about the trans issue. Something about how how boring it would be if everyone in society was expected to be the same, or some such stuff, and therefore anyone who opposes trans rights is being "boring" as well as wrong. Anyone else hear that? Is this guy in general a TRA or just stupid?

He can do serious when he wants to. He is a consumer champion on something, can't remember what, and he has done programmes on other scandals like the sewage discharge one. He was a good sport on the Michael Mackintire programme a couple of weeks ago, but I suppose that's career-boosting. I liked his wit on Sewing Bee, although it always felt as if he could easily spill over into insults,e.g when he said that Sewing Bee was 'all poofs and old people".

Almahart · 25/02/2024 11:58

I hate the way he calls himself 'mummy. I agree with pps, he's a gay misogynist.

FrancescaContini · 25/02/2024 12:01

That’s one of the reasons I don’t like him. His “pansexual” personality seems to make it okay to bandy around lines such as the one above about “poofs”; if a boring “old” heterosexual used this slur, he / she would soon be cancelled by Generation Pansexual.

I took dd to see him live (dd was 18 at the time and thinks she’s trans), I found a few parts of his show funny but it was all about LGBTQ+ stuff which got a bit boring after a while. Some of his stuff is funny but I find him pretty annoying.

We went to see him last year (the David Beckham TV show). And it did all get a bit much by the end. He can be very funny at times, but not all the time!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/02/2024 12:43

Lots of "but that's different" crap from Lycett, but I don't see how.

Of course. These types never appreciate their hypocrisy being called out.

Betweenthe2 · 25/02/2024 12:51

Now tell me: do you genuinely believe TRAs and their supporters listen to GC arguments in good faith and are prepared to consider they may be wrong?
**
Of course not. Why is that relevant though?

It's possible to disagree with some behaviour / views exhibited by some GC and TRA people. It's not a football match where you pick a side to support.

'Pansexual' eh?

I wouldn't let him anywhere near my kitchen.

I wonder what ones he likes? Le Creuset?

theDudesmummy · 25/02/2024 13:46

Pansexual?

He isn't evil. Just:

  • Attention seeking (like most comedians TBF)
  • Massive tunnel vision and tendency to get obsessed with things
  • Spiky/bitchy persona (persona as I have no idea what his personality is)
  • Good at very nasty insults/saying outrageous things for a reaction
  • Probably quite insecure about being liked underneath it all

Many of those traits have very postive aspects (e.g. the tunnel vision and his various campaigns) They all help make him a very talented comedian, but also make his takes on this issue extremely predictable.

MrsJamin · 25/02/2024 14:38

I thought his gardening stories were funny until he used really misogynistic slang sluts / slags / bitches. Why were they all female slurs? Pathetic. White gay men seem to often not see anything from a female point of view... How are they not aware of their massive blind spot when they tell themselves they are so leftie and "for" everyone? It's just pathetic.

That's pretty much all I knew of him before today and I found him bland and mildly humorous. I've changed my opinion of him and think that he's a reprehensible shit, after ready his rubbish about rape being hilarious. How's he still working?

@OneMoreTime23 "He's the guy that said he would shred £10k if David Beckham became ambassador for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

But then he went back on it and just shredded"

He didn t "go back on it". He never intended to shred the money in the first place- because, whatever else he is, he isnMt a psychopath! It was a publicity stunt-he gave it to charity.

I don't think the K Foundation are psychopaths and they burnt £1M thirty years ago - K Foundation burn a million quid.

Hedjwitch · 25/02/2024 14:47

I find him quite creepy tbh. Rather smug

PaperWalkAndTalk · 25/02/2024 14:49

He's someone who has to keep resorting to publicity stunts to get any attention, and if he wasn't "pansexual" he wouldn't have a career.

theDudesmummy · 25/02/2024 15:00

I guess if his attention-seeking leads to focus on important issues such as the sewerage one then it has a positive aspect. But I thought the throw-away comment on The Newsagents was damaging. It would lead the casual listener to think "why are people so mean to trans people, why can't they just live and let live? Why are some people so parochial and reactionary that they have the vapours if a bloke wears a skirt?"

He'll say anything for attention and a job. He's the least funny comedian I know of.

Surely for slightly dirty gardening jokes “look at this prick” is low hanging fruit.

The KLF are true artists, punks, revolutionaries. They are also hilarious and have no fucks to give. JL is the OPPOSITE of them.

ChaoticCrumble · 25/02/2024 18:26

His book was very funny but he's another male comedian who will never know what it's like to be female and have to accept (ok, be asked to accept) men as women.

I find most comedians never criticise one another. Gervais is easy pickings for them. Not their panel show mate, doing well so they probably think he can take it. But it comes across as cheap shots to me when all comedians do edgy comedy at one point or another. They've all said something offensive. At least Gervais is in the real world.

spookehtooth · 25/02/2024 18:39

The thing is @theDudesmummy there are many different views out there, and one of them is definitely very well described by what he said. Not everyone who takes a critical view like you cares about women's rights. Some are actively hostile, despite their critical views on the subject

Talking about one of the views is not the same as denying or disrespecting the other views. I would hazard a guess that he's targeted that particular views because it's the easiest target. I think perhaps you are reading too much into his views from what he said. Unless of course there's evidence that suggests otherwise, as in explicit statements on the other perspectives people hold that require consideration

WhereYouLeftIt · 25/02/2024 18:43

I used to like Lycett, until he did one standup routine that just gave me the ick.

Yes, I'm sure it never happened, or at most there was a tiny grain of substance that he exaggerated until unrecognisability. But - this wasn't like his Hugo Boss schtick, or the sewerage stuff, where he is the little guy taking on the big corporate entities. This was him revelling in the idea of him making an office manager, a woman, essentially a 'little guy' (as he presents himself to be) bloody miserable through behaving like a fucking arse. By the end of the routine, I just had the ick, and I never found him funny again.

@JaninaDuszejko Anyone who destroys a million quid is a psychopath in my opinion.

OnceinaMinion · 26/02/2024 16:18

i think there are a lot of comedians who change when they get a bit of fame. They get famous and then think it’s a platform for all their personal views and forget they have to be funny and work at the comedy.

AttaThat · 26/02/2024 16:24

I’ve found some of his publicity stunts - like the Hugo boss thing - quite amusing. But frankly the “bitchy” persona is one I can’t stand.

Whoever said they were disappointed that Lewis Goodall didn’t pull him up on the dismissal - is there any history of considered debate on trans issues on The News Agents? Most of the time I’ve heard them refer to it it’s been pretty dismissive.
