I've just lost my job due to needing time off for IVF.

You've lost your job for being a woman and wanting to do a thing that women do. That's terrible. And in Spain which I thought was much more progressive than the U.K.

I worked for two women, neither of whom are Spanish. But Spanish labour law is allowing me redress. Much more accessible, affordable redress with much higher compensation than would be the case in the UK.

My husband has so far kept quiet about all this with his employers, but won't be able to for much longer. As paternity leave rights are the same as maternity leave rights here, we fear he may have similar problems. But if he does, he too will have legal redress.

I hope you win, for essentially being oppressed on the grounds of your sex.

Using preferred pronouns isn't gaslighting. Compelled speech is such a bullshit concept too. Every time you are expected to be polite to someone you don't like at work, do you refuse, call them an arsehole and then cry 'compelled speech!' if reprimanded?

If my sexual abuser announced that I was to refer to them as ‘she’ from then on, I would assume that it was a fucked up bit of power play. And I would tell them to fuck off. I’m guessing you would think that was rude?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 18:33

It's all power play, IMO.

I mean, it is a sex discrimination case. But I didn't choose the language. Some thing could have happened if I wasn't a woman. My husband will need the same amount of time off as me, both for the treatment and in the case that it is successful and we have a baby. It is actually discrimination on the basis of trying to become a parent.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 18:37

Which indirectly discriminates more against women. Most men just have sex or wank into a cup to conceive a baby. It's all much more invasive for women, from conception to birth, and beyond.

I mean they may actually be trans, or it may be a power play, but no one is obliged to be polite to someone who has sexually abused them. If you punched them repeatedly it would be justified, but not legal.

Sure but he has to be there at the same time as me to wank into the cup, and will take exactly the same amount of time off for paternity leave, so from a work point of view it's exactly the same. Only difference is he won't get the extra hours for breastfeeding.

PP82 · 22/02/2024 18:53

It isn't actually true that sex plays no role. Pregnancy and IVF related medical issues and the time off needed due to them is part of the case, and obviously were never going to be an issue for him. Nevertheless we are still nervous about when he does have to tell his employers.

There's a lot to respond to there.

I have experienced a lot of sexual violence. I don't have the same trauma response as you. I'm fine in the presence of men who are unknown to me. I do have a trauma response to banging on a door. I don't expect no one to ever bang on a door. Trauma responses need medical intervention, not society to be organised around them.

If my child was trans I would support them 100% in their medical transition, if that's what they chose.

If any of my rapists asked me to refer to them as a woman, I wouldn't give a shit. Fuckers raped me. Their gender is irrelevant. I have also been sexually exploited by women. It was no better. I was raped by men because I was vulnerable. In almost all cases I could probably have fought them off had I mentally been able to summon the resources. Last time I was a victim of sexual violence (kidnap and attempted rape) I'd had enough and I did fight and I did get away. Physical strength is only part of the picture. Having a penis is only part of the picture. Sexual violence is a product of social relationships, not biology.

You've been through all this and still don't understand why sex matters.

I really hope you get the help you need. You sound very troubled.

Sooo... It turns out there was a twist to the original reported story of a woman being accused of transphobia...

It turns out both the "women" involved were trans. The individual being sent down sees themselves as a proper woman, and the other individual as not hence the "you are not a proper woman like me" comment.

For what its worth, while I don't agree with the accused's logic, I do still think it is outrageous that they faced criminal charges for speaking what they saw as the truth. And it still has horrible wider free speech implications.

But good god what a tangled web.

@anothernamitynamenamechange I appreciate you updating the thread on the Reduxx article being fixed! It was quite jarring reading the original piece knowing what we know now.
