Your generation gave us raves and I thank you for it.

Perhaps there's a confidence that comes from not feeling I have to compensate, but I'm 40s & I describe myself as middle aged sometimes for a laugh and sometimes with utmost seriousness because my lovely mum died at much less than twice my age.

But I bet people who are into stereotypes, like a PP, couldn't guess much about my actual personality and life from that.

Honestly the discovery of house music and raving changed my life. Its been 35 years now on and off - and the fact I’ve been doing it 35 years means I can’t be in denial about my age 😀

DialSquare · 22/02/2024 15:01

We probably went to the same warehouse do's (as they were called before raves) Sam.

MorningSunshineSparkles · 22/02/2024 15:04

The comments she made were horrible, and tbh I would consider someone calling another person “a faggot with tits” as a hate crime. You can state biological facts that there are only two sexes but the kind of hate that it takes to say something like she did about another person does deserve a punishment, even if it’s only a suspended sentence and fine.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/02/2024 15:08

Life stage isn’t about age though. It’s about what you are doing at any given time. Even that can be wooly.
Who was middle aged, the 45 yr old on the school run with her first child? The 45yr old on the school run with her grandchild?
The 55yr old retired and going on holiday three times a year, mountaineering and skiing? The 55yr old working on the checkout at Tesco?

Middle aged is number related, not lifestyle related.

An extremely offensive and indefensible comment but I'm certain I agree being rude should be categorised as a crime and I definitely don't agree with imprisonment for being rude

They were horrible, and made by one transwoman to another, which muddies the hate crime water a bit.
What about women, which nasty words about women would attract a punishment, do you think? I suggested, ‘Saggy old hag with droopy tits.’ I doubt any judge would sentence for that though.

Agree. It was hurtful, unkind and unpleasant, but calling it a crime is an overreaction.

And jailing someone for calling somebody else a rude name? Nah. There needs to be some onus on individuals to develop a modicum of resilience. People don’t agree with us. They sometimes don’t like us. That’s life. It can’t be legislated away.

"she" in this case is in fact he.

It's basically a spat between men who "identify as" women, one of whom thinks men only turn into women if they have genital surgery* and one who thinks saying "I'm a woman" plus some clothing, make up and fake breasts is enough.

*He is right about sex being binary but has missed out immutable - men can never turn into women.

So it seems like some on here are SO keen to be free to abuse trans people, that they want to do away with hate crime laws altogether. And you wonder why people associate you with the far right?

ATerrorofLeftovers · 22/02/2024 15:16

A healthy level of self -respect and the ability to self-validate is really important. It has to be balanced with being able to take on feedback about our actions (aka a conscience), but if we’re so fragile we can’t maintain our sense of ourself in the face of disagreement, criticism or name-calling, that is a problem in us, and it’s on us to solve it. Get therapy to develop a stronger sense of self and self-esteem and compassion. It’s doable.

That's coming from a place of extreme privilege. And WE'RE the ones with 'luxury beliefs?'

Well that’s a bit of a reach! Nice try 😉 👌

I think it’s more we need to have a think across the board and have a level playing field on it. If we decide we’re going to criminalise any calling of rude names to anybody who might be vulnerable, that needs to operate across the board, as Puzzled says. So calling women ‘slapper’, ‘tart’, ‘old bag’ etc needs to be criminalised too. There can’t be fear or favour under the law. Though clearly, there currently is. It’s not acceptable though.

I believe sending such communications via social media is a criminal offence in the UK. Rarely prosecuted or even investigated sure, but criminal nonetheless.

You have no idea of what level of privilege, if any, I have! So don’t be silly.

Surely you want robust mental health for all?

What do you think is better - a) going through life like a straw in the wind, victim to anybody’s partial opinion of us, reacting to it and becoming upset and disempowered, or b) having a strong sense of self and enough resilience to withstand criticism or not being liked and emerging still in a health place?

(Hint: a) is the state that will help you through life.

Not if it’s directed against biological women, merely for being biological women, it isn’t.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/02/2024 15:26

I think it’s actually really hard. Some people’s threatening abusive behaviour doesn’t seem to matter. Other people’s attracts prosecution.

Some people’s ’hate crime’ is another person’s Robust insult, and another’s Literal violence.

Not everyone has the resilience to cope with daily prejudice, discrimination and harassment, nor should they have to have. And not everyone has access to therapy.

What other forms of prejudice should people 'just be more resilient' about? You sound like a GB News pundit. (I assume, have never watched obviously.)

Exactly. We’re theoretically policed by consent in the UK (ok, this is arguably moot at the moment, but…). People need to be clear on what is and isn’t ok and at the moment it feels there is no consensus on this. Also that changes have been imposed that many don’t agree with or consent to.

I can't speak for other countries but so far there are no hate crime laws in the UK. An actual crime can be aggravated by hate (unless it's against a woman), like if the word faggot was used while beating someone up
