The comments she made were horrible, and tbh I would consider someone calling another person “a faggot with tits” as a hate crime. You can state biological facts that there are only two sexes but the kind of hate that it takes to say something like she did about another person does deserve a punishment, even if it’s only a suspended sentence and fine.

Horrible, horrible thing to say.

Still shouldn't be in prison for it (I don't know if ther was more, have read most but not all thread). Prison should simply be for people (usually men) who are violent and those people should be in there a lot longer.

And, fuck, I have been called much worse! For my (incorrectly) perceived sexiality, for my (incorrectly) perceived race, for being on a bicycle, for pushing a pram. Always by a man, mind you and probably all because I'm a woman. If they made misogyny a hate crime I'm not sure how they'd cope with the influx of reports. Although I guess you'd still have to get the police to care, so maybe not.

Dear @PP82

You appear very angry. Maybe get outside or step away from the screen because you are so busy accusing others of terrible things, you don't appear to realise how dehumanising you're being. Dehumanising and, frankly, a bit silly - Laurence Fox? If you say so.

However, you don't know my story, or anyone else's on this thread, so maybe stop acting like you're the only person to have faced bigotry and injustices. Sadly, you are not alone.

Let me be clear here: disagreement is not hate. And, if you continue to frame people so unfavourably, I really fear for your mental health. Go well, I won't be responding to you again unless you can drop the disrespectful discourse.

It was quite the ordeal for the guy.

Yes, but he wasn't clearly and maliciously abusing anyone.

Also, I frequently joke about committing terrorist acts, as I come from a political tradition with a proud history of carrying them out. I don't make such jokes on social media, as I'm not a total idiot.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 16:14

And ignoring that in this case it's probably a translation of the original term used

It is. The actual term was "maricón".

I've faced some bigotry and injustice, but not an overwhelming amount. I'm angry at the rise of the populist and far right, of which I consider the 'gender critical ' to be a part, and on behalf of people who have it much worse than me. It's not personal. I have a lovely life and am generally very happy. But I've always fought bigotry and prejudice and I'm not going to stop now. You are the ones who are always aggrieved and feel perpetually persecuted.

But the context should have been clear. The point I was making is that comments on platforms like Twitter can be taken out of context, even when we think it’s clear.

Exactly. So what is to stop the police knocking on my door if I state the scientific fact that there are only two sexes? The precedent has been set.

Couldn't agree more. We have self responsibility and autonomy. Some like to avoid that because its painful as it involves honest self reflection and work.

Those screaming "privilege" seem to have placed, somewhat unwisely, their locus of control entirely outside of themselves. They'd do well to read some Viktor Frankl. Or The Road Less Travelled. And perhaps grow up a bit.

💯
To place the locus of control outside of yourself is incredibly disempowering. Both texts you mention are incredibly helpful in understanding this.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/02/2024 16:25

I’m not far right. Dyed in the wool wishy washy liberal, me.

I just happen to know people can’t change sex, like most of the world including people who are also really nasty and bigoted and people who are paragons of virtue.

I can't speak for other countries but so far there are no hate crime laws in the UK. An actual crime can be aggravated by hate (unless it's against a woman), like if the word faggot was used while beating someone up

NLP may be discredited, but it’s excellent at helping people recognise where their strength is. Don’t let other people’s nasty words drive your life. Work around the obstacles rather than banging your head on them.

People can't change their biological sex but if you were actually a liberal you'd realise that doesn't matter.

ArabellaScott · 22/02/2024 16:38

Well, I think it's time for a cuppa. Ciao, all.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/02/2024 16:38

I know nothing about the road less traveled. I do know a couple of NLP principles that are quite handy for resilience. You’re getting a bit reactive. Are you reading in things which aren’t actually there?

There’s a conversation about external locus of control that my NLP reference was in response to. There’s a couple of similar principles in NLP- nothing magical about just a bit of old fashioned wisdom.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 16:38

No, being deluded about the importance of biological sex in many circumstances isn't the definition of "a liberal".

Yep. I expect that Nigel Farage, Billy Bragg and myself all agree on what is an apple and what is an orange. It doesn’t mean we all agree politically.

PP82 · 22/02/2024 16:35

It does not matter if they dress up how they like; it does matter but it is their business if they harm their body in trying to look like the other biological type they cannot be.

What does matter is for a society to lie and say they are women and may be treated as though they are, alongside women, in all situations.

That is repressive and regressive not liberal.

PP82 · 22/02/2024 16:35

I agree it’s doesn’t matter. We’re stuck with our biology but can wear what we like. We can go into whatever career we like. Being female no longer stops us being a doctor. Being make no longer stops us looking after our kids.

Gender is bollocks that tries to force us to behave differently according to our sex.
