Not if it’s directed against biological women, merely for being biological women, it isn’t.

Would be covered under malicious communications.

Not everyone has the resilience to cope with daily prejudice, discrimination and harassment, nor should they have to have. And not everyone has access to therapy.

What other forms of prejudice should people 'just be more resilient' about? You sound like a GB News pundit. (I assume, have never watched obviously.)

Agree. Provision of therapy is abysmal and nothing short of a national disgrace.

Nice bit of prejudice from you there. Did you realise? Or was it unconscious bias?

I’m actually a lefty, but don’t let that stop you trotting out that tired old trope that anyone who’s vaguely GC must be a right-wing nutter, and therefore is to be simultaneously feared and dismissed.

What the fuck are you going on about?

You may self define as a lefty if you wish. That is your right.

So it seems like some on here are SO keen to be free to abuse trans people, that they want to do away with hate crime laws altogether. And you wonder why people associate you with the far right?

No. What is worrying is that someone can be found guilty by a court for saying that there are only two sexes.
I wouldn’t ever want abuse of any group of people to be acceptable but I equally don’t want to see people imprisoned for wrongthink

I'm not about to defend the UK justice system. I just said it was technically criminal.

Chersfrozenface · 22/02/2024 15:37

pickledandpuzzled · 22/02/2024 15:26

I think it’s actually really hard. Some people’s threatening abusive behaviour doesn’t seem to matter. Other people’s attracts prosecution.

Some people’s ’hate crime’ is another person’s Robust insult, and another’s Literal violence.

For instance, the word 'faggot'.

And ignoring that in this case it's probably a translation of the original term used.

It's a North American slang word for a gay man, considered more or less unacceptable or, judging by some posts on this thread, a word inciting violence and constituting a hate crime.

Yet everyone seems to praise and admire the song "Fairytale of New York", which is partly in the form of a dialogue where the female character calls the male character a "cheap lousy faggot".

So, vile violence inciting hate crime or courageous boundary-busting punk lyric?

Context matters. The context in this case is clear.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/02/2024 15:40

Must admit can’t sing that bit out loud, @Chersfrozenface !

pickledandpuzzled · 22/02/2024 15:40

In fact most of that song- the woman gets some pretty foul abuse too.

Is it though?

What about the bloke a few years ago who made a comment on Twitter that if the airport he was due to fly from wasn’t open tomorrow, as it had been shut for reasons I don’t recall, that he was going to blow it up. The context was clear to most people but it didn’t stop the anti terrorist police from bashing his door down.

That lyric is usually omitted now and Shane McGowan and Kirsty MacColl have discussed the use of the word in quite a nuanced way, and agreed it should be omitted where it caused offence. I believe Kirsty used alternative lyrics in the end. The word slut is also usually omitted.

I don't really think these are comparable cases.

Oh, I know.

But we'll ignore whether Shane MacGowan's lyrics in that case constitute a hate crime, since misogyny isn't one.

I still want to know about the word 'faggot'.

Billy Bragg, that paragon of the progressive left, was a fan of SMacG - called him "one of the greatest songwriters of my generation".

A healthy level of self -respect and the ability to self-validate is really important. It has to be balanced with being able to take on feedback about our actions (aka a conscience), but if we’re so fragile we can’t maintain our sense of ourself in the face of disagreement, criticism or name-calling, that is a problem in us, and it’s on us to solve it. Get therapy to develop a stronger sense of self and self-esteem and compassion. It’s doable.

Couldn't agree more. We have self responsibility and autonomy. Some like to avoid that because its painful as it involves honest self reflection and work.

Those screaming "privilege" seem to have placed, somewhat unwisely, their locus of control entirely outside of themselves. They'd do well to read some Viktor Frankl. Or The Road Less Travelled. And perhaps grow up a bit.

Well, Glen Hansard and Lisa O'Neill sang the full original lyrics at Shane MacGowan's funeral (in a church).

Are you Laurence Fox?

It's the translator's interpretation for a Spanish slur referring to a gay man.
