Starmer: "trans-inclusive" conversion therapy ban, "modernise" the GRA, all hate crime to be aggravated offences as part of making every child "proud and confident"

Exclusive in Diva, following a reception at a LGBT+ Labour event in Parliament on 29 Jan:

https://diva-magazine.com/2024/01/29/exclusive-keir-starmer-lgbtqia-rights/

"“We’ll strengthen the law, so every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offence,” Starmer said. “We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care. We’ll modernise the Gender Recognition Act. We’ll implement a full, trans-inclusive, ban on all forms of conversion therapy. We fully support the view that conversion therapy is psychologically damaging abuse.”

“We are committed to a decade of national renewal and will work with all the organisations in this room tonight so every child can feel proud and confident in who they are, to stand up for LGBT+ rights at home and abroad and to get Britain’s future back.”

The mention of children is unclear but must have a background to the full speech? LGBT Labour hasn't tweeted about it but others have. Rayner and Dodds also in attendance.

I actually like my Tory MP, so that relieves a bit of the guilt I feel in voting for the party on this issue!

Froodwithatowel · 30/01/2024 13:28

Thanks for coming out with it Starmer. You are the woman-hating nutjob I took you for.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 30/01/2024 13:31

What does ‘modernise the GRA’ even mean?

flyingbuttress43 · 30/01/2024 13:31

Starmer "It's wrong to say only women have a cervix" - September 2021.

He told us who he is then. Why are people surprised now? The question is: is he stupid in which case he's not fit to be PM, is he a hypocrite, in which case he is not fit to be PM or is he cynical and targeting the young in which case he's just being your usual morality-free politician. I'm leaning towards all three.....

What I've never got an evidenced-based answer to is who exactly started this ideology and why? We can postulate anything from big pharma to perverts at the seat of power globally and everything in between, but until we really understand the sinister powers behind the throne, we will struggle to defeat it.

“We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care."

Can someone explain to me why LGB and T(and whatever the plus means) people should take priority over everyone else? Is that even legal? It really shouldn't be. 🙄

Exactly my thought when I read the op. Nevermind the children with cancer no we're going to focus on mutilating healthy genitals for trans. Surely it's discrimination to prioritise someone just because they're LGBT?

Igneococcus · 30/01/2024 13:35

I also think there is a personal reason for him to do this. I'm the sister of a politician (not in the UK), there is no way my brother would ever commit an unforced error like this one unless he really utterly believes it.

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 30/01/2024 13:35

This crap makes it embarrassing to be an L because people think we’re part of this….!!!

God in heaven, how stupid can he be? He’s just handed the Tories a way to talk about the NHS to distract from their own dismal record. Now whenever Labour bring it up the Tories can go, ‘But Labour wants to push you to the back of the queue behind LGBTQ people and spend your hard earned money on sex changes!’

Is this a cunning ploy to have everyone waiting for elective surgery* or useful MH interventions to declare themselves LGBT+?

After all, how could anyone disprove your assertion given that no evidence beyond self-ID is likely to be necessary (see 'simplification' of GRA)?

UK will be the most inclusive cohort of nations in the world.

*Because it's surely not only particular types of surgery? Why would that be in line with the Health and Social Care Act 2022, the NHS Charter, plausibly HRA 1998…

Lantyslee · 30/01/2024 13:47

Starmer has got shit for brains and is a cowardly twat. This has made my decision for me. I'll be voting Tory, not just for women to have the right to define themselves by biological reality but in a desperate attempt to stop my trans identifying mentally ill young adult DC from destroying their life.

If anyone thinks that makes me hateful then they can fuck off.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 30/01/2024 13:49

LGB need to start separating themselves from the T. LGB are not the ones calling women terfs, threatening violence or murder or trying to get into schools to influence children, gay men are not trying to get into women's single spaces, sports categories or obliterate the word woman.

I knew Starmer couldn't be trusted an inch, his ambition is so desperate he is willing to throw women and children under the bus, put us in all kinds of danger, put our kids in danger from severe mental illness and groomers/paedophiles and make the NHS waiting list even longer for people who genuinely need it. He's trying to isolate children from their parents same as the SNP. He's shown he is a disgusting woman hater and lies through his teeth when he feels like it.

When is this sheer madness of entertaining a minority of misogynistic fantasists and bullies ever going to stop?

flyingbuttress43 · 30/01/2024 13:50

Yes Winnadin: I read that too going as far back as 2016 but I'm not sure how evidenced based it was and as far as I recall it didn't really get to the bottom of why.

Chersfrozenface · 30/01/2024 13:51

Depends whether he and Labour mean LGBT+ or just T.

The more we enter hung parliament territory the better, and interviews like this make that more likely. Starmer having a thumping great majority is as bad for this country as the Tories having one. Power goes to their heads, they can ram rod all sorts of policy through and the country is reliant on brave backbenchers voting with their consciences to stop bad policy from being enacted, and that rarely works in practice.

My feeling is that this election will be seismic for reasons the two big parties are clueless about. Reform and the Greens are going to do real damage this time. They might not win many MPs, but if they win enough to stop the two big beasts from having it all their own way, power to their elbows I say. This country deserves so much better than the shit on offer from both the blues and the current reds.

Much of the entrenchment of gender bollocks slid on by, virtue signalled through during the Con/Lib coalition and not Lib flagship 'proportional representation' policy, and in Scotland Scottish Greens are the driving force behind GRR and Conversion Therapy bills, whilst cocking up their Deposit Return Scheme.

LWSnow · 30/01/2024 13:53

Looks like Starmer thinks a woman is anything a man thinks he is

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 30/01/2024 13:53

And are they telling us there's nobody desperate enough to coach their struggling, mentally unwell child "Tell them you might be the opposite sex and you'll get help quicker"

But Surely That Would Never Happen?

PronounssheRa · 30/01/2024 13:56

We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care.

I didn't spot this initially so grateful to those who did.

What does he mean. Is he talking about gender affirming treatment if so its unwise to make these commitments ahead of the Cass review reporting. Or is he talking generally about prioritising LGBT+ for health care, which would breach the EA

Or, and more likely l think, was he just spouting soundbites that hadn't been thought through, just to keep the audience happy.

Chersfrozenface · 30/01/2024 13:57

But Surely That Would Never Happen?

If the "help" is affirmation only and the inexorable path to cross-sex hormones and surgery, how much help would that actually be?

Nabooh · 30/01/2024 13:59

I hate the tories as much as the next struggling person but there is no denying that they are paving the way for all this bullshit to be contained whilst Labour insist on doubling down and promoting it.

Probs the same thing I read.

It likely isnt true then.
This whole movement has been going on since the *80s. They've had some luck, and got people into great positions in the civil service, service user places, big companies, IT/tech etc, where they are useful. But its definitely been ongoing since the 80s.
What was Soros doing in the 80s?
He might have some input more recently, and maybe threw cash at the whole concept, but I'm no longer sure he was the master.

  • maybe before the 80s. A historian might benefit us now.
Farmhouse1234 · 30/01/2024 14:08

If I identify as a man, do I get my nhs appointment quicker then (assuming Labour get in)? Could be interesting …

Kucinghitam · 30/01/2024 14:10

Any Labour people who might be monitoring this thread:

Please convey my genuine heartfelt thanks to Starmer for so clearly and unambiguously informing the electorate of the priorities of a potential Labour government; it is rare these days to have such straightforward clarity from any politician.

risefromyourgrave · 30/01/2024 14:22

I wouldn’t trust Keir Starmer to put the bins out on the right day, let alone run the country. He twists and turns more often than a weather vane in a storm and has the personality of a wet wipe. I have voted Labour in every single GE, (with the exception of when Jeremy Corbyn was in charge) even when my vote was lost in a sea of blue, but I’ll be fucked if I would ever vote for that duplicitous nonentity of a man.

HooverIsAlwaysBroken · 30/01/2024 14:28

I am genuinely upset by the statement of healthcare. I mourn our dead family member. Cancer treatment was delayed until too late. Our friend (suicide) had a family and I am desperately upset for the children. To prioritise trans treatment is not right, just because you aren’t LBGTQ+ doesn’t make you worth less.

separately, I have read so many tragic stories of de transitioning and so many countries are stepping away from affirmative care.

if Starmer has any personal reasons to be supportive of trans, he should handle that privately. On a societal level, this is madness.
