Really insightful post on X the platform formally known as Twitter I feel it's worth sharing on here:

It was the first time I'd met KJW but he told me he supports single sex spaces for women, particularly survivors.

So has he stopped using them since his tweet from last year that was posted earlier on this thread?

pickledandpuzzled · 12/01/2024 16:54

I’m shocked about that deletion.

It was about how some people seem to be really good at getting into photos that then get shared- particularly egotistical people.

It suggested the patriarchal centering of certain kinds of people could be subconscious.

And it used an acronym for men with trans identities.

And you believed him?

Hepwo · 12/01/2024 16:57

She esteemed him, Tinsel. So much so that she decided to tell the whole of Twitter.

tackytriceratops · 12/01/2024 16:58

Was there any push back to Helen's suggest to speak to Went and the "trans kids group" from anyone?

Off topic slightly but this was from a year ago with Went on the panel. With Esse, Joyce and someone else (not sure who she is.)

tackytriceratops · 12/01/2024 16:59

*helen's suggestion, that should say.

If that had happened to me, I'd have waited until he moved on and then taken another picture for Twitter, without him in it. Photos don't automatically post themselves to Twitter just because you've taken them.

That can be tricksy though. Sometimes they support single sex spaces for women, which includes themselves, since they regard themselves as women. Not sure about "especially survivors" either. You support single sex spaces or you don't, in my opinion. No qualifiers.

This was in the context of rape crisis counselling. Singles sex, born female groups and groups just for trans survivors. This was something we agreed on.

Did Helen Lewis refer a parent to go and talk to Went at the event for advice on that parent's trans identifying child?

If this did happen, has anyone from the event addressed this? Do this Brighton group endorse Went as a person to give a parent guidance on this issue?

Also interested to hear the answer to this.

While we're waiting, I earnestly recommend readers visit twitter to read this thread on the pitfalls of asking trans-identifying adults for advice on how to handle teenagers' issues.

I particularly liked her final post in the thread.

Well yes. How many times have we seen this exact thing happen on these threads? Male people 'fully support' single sex spaces as long as they are allowed to continue to use them!

Therefore, it amounts to a lie. But what would you expect from someone who declares that they are something that they are not?

Went has shown that Went uses female single sex spaces because Went is scared to use male single sex spaces. Went uses female people as a shield. Either it is a very common story, or someone just like Went, has posted this on FWR over the past year or so. The exact sentiment was I try to use gender neutral where I can, but if I cannot, I will always use the female single sex spaces because I am scared of the male single sex spaces. Sound familiar?

So, the event organisers allow a male to speak at their event because why? All attendees are welcome to do so.

Gosh.... How very very strange that other women's events that are actually premised on allowing any woman to speak is regarded as 'aligning with people who are harming women'. Yet, THIS event, allows a male who actively harms women to speak and out goes a huge effort to shame any woman who points out the absolutely clear hypocrisy.

All while that group still hosts a sin page that actively harms another woman's efforts.

Fuck that hypocrisy! If that is not a mind fuck, I don't know what is.

tackytriceratops · 12/01/2024 17:04

Was there any push back to Helen's suggest to speak to Went and the "trans kids group" from anyone?

As in, other audience members, organisers or even Barnes?

I know, and the poor judgement continues with a thread started to remind us all that without the Brighton seal of approval we are MAGA adjacent.

TinselAngel · 12/01/2024 17:08

If you're speaking on a panel at such an event but are unaware of the arguments around the invention of the concept of the trans child, by AGP men to justify their fetish, that's a serious gap in your knowledge.

Helleofabore · 12/01/2024 17:10

To be clear this :

The exact sentiment was I try to use gender neutral where I can, but if I cannot, I will always use the female single sex spaces because I am scared of the male single sex spaces.

Had been preceded by : 'I fully support single sex spaces' in posts before.

If I was not as clear as I shouldv'e been. But I believe that many of us were on those thread so will remember them well.

What is the ‘gentry left’?

The ruling left wing class, Labour Party, trades union leadership, left wing feminists, journalists etc.

They identify as the leaders of the working class without actually having to listen to the working class, and never ever admit when they are wrong.

It was Lang who first started talking about them on here.

I think we have realised early on that there is a serious and significant gap in Helen Lewis' knowledge on this topic.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 12/01/2024 17:12

I dont think JCJ is insightful in the slightest.

A man with gender was invited to an event, the panel recommended his sevices to the audience, and he was tagged as esteemed or some such in the photo published after the event.

JCJ rambling tweet didnt seem to have space to tackle all of that, just something about other womens unsubstantiated links to right wing american money.

The Deptford Women's Project letter is a useful piece of background too here.

TinselAngel · 12/01/2024 17:14

I think Helen Lewis tries to have a foot in both camps to protect her career, which is understandable in many ways.

I forgot to add academia to the list.

BonfireLady · 12/01/2024 17:15

Urgh, it's depressing to see that Helen Lewis used the phrase "trans kids" and specifically recommended a transwoman as a valuable person to talk to. Whilst I do support debate over no debate (i.e. listening to different voices), the result shouldn't be that this becomes a recommended pathway for any parent at this kind of event 🤦‍♀️ It's perhaps indicative of just how many layers it takes to get through to really see all of the different harms that are currently being done in relation to gender identity.

Related to the main thread, I watched it all play out on Twitter with a similar feeling of sadness as I had with the "GC infighting" after Genspect. Thank you for reaching out on here and adding all the context and clarification @IamSarah That all makes sense.

RandySavage · 12/01/2024 17:19

TinselAngel

Thank you

I thought this was going to be a call for help - Clare, having found herself lost at the bottom of a spiral, and needing a hand out.

I get that, and I like HL's work, but to refer to KJW's group for trans kids is inexcusable given the context of the book.
