I take the point that women shouldn't have conceded the term 'feminist', but at the time, the arguments that the rest of us were harming women's interests by using it were very persuasive. I know I took them at their word when the Brighton Collective said behind-the-scenes negotiations were being affected by their inability to distance themselves from unaffiliated women, just because the women called themselves feminists.
My main reason for calling myself a feminist was in order to spite a particular kind of right-wing man, and I was certainly prepared to give up that satisfaction for the sake of women everywhere and our rights to single-sex prisons, hospital wards, changing rooms and so on!
These days, it's more about wanting to distance myself from the Brighton collective... But I'm fucked if any of them are going to chase me off FWR. It's women on AIBU and FWR who educated me on what was going on, long before I'd heard of any of the Brighton collective, so why should I stop using this forum for them?
