Sorry, my live transcribing fell away because I got 'rate limited' for posting too much. I highly recommend listening on catch-up, that was everything I could have hoped for.

Jodie is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, is she?

I mean she's doing a PhD, she's not stupid.

ArthurbellaScott · 15/11/2023 11:02

WarriorN · 15/11/2023 10:43

Mn locked me out for the last 10 mins, so frustrating!

same. I presume it's an automatic feature, but it makes live transcribing very difficult.

Jodie is technically correct here to be fair. Men can suffer from endometriosis even if it is in very small numbers.

How does that work, exactly? Surely by definition you have to have a uterus to have endometriosis? (Genuine question - not intended to be read as hostile.)

I did find the paper on this. It's a vanishingly small number, but yes, 20 something men IN THE WORLD have suffered from this, in the penis, iirc.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 15/11/2023 11:03

It's a vanity project. I just hope they don't divert funds away from other orgs genuinely trying to help women with endo, or confuse sufferers who need help, not trite, genderist activism.

SamW98 · 15/11/2023 11:05

Look forward to seeing any Twitter updates later - wonder if Steph will claim to have dismantled Emma?

Morred · 15/11/2023 11:05

As a slight aside, this is why you need robust HR/hiring processes. Jodie was persuasive on why she needs a CEO to manage the day-to-day running of the charity. Is there a role profile/job description for that? Was it circulated as part of the recruitment process? Where did you advertise the vacancy? Who was on the shortlisting and interviewing panels? What set Steph apart from the other applicants (relevant experience, passion for the subject, transferable skills, etc.)?

That would at least have given Jodie a leg to stand on rather than saying she asked Steph if she wanted the job, based on having met Steph at an awards ceremony. But everyone who has ever been involved in the charity ever, including service users, all agree it's a brilliant appointment.

mouthgoingsouth · 15/11/2023 11:06

That was epic!

ArthurbellaScott · 15/11/2023 11:06

Jodie said that she offered the role to Steph 'over coffee' and Steph said it came out of the blue.

So doesn't sound like there was any kind of process at all.

I mean she's doing a PhD, she's not stupid.

There are any number of stupid and pointless PhDs. It depend on the topic and the agenda. I would think it is extremely dangerous to be doing a medical based PhD with a political agenda, to include and give equal weight to males in a disease that is almost exclusively centred around the female reproductive system. And then use the evidence of your own (possibly flawed) PhD to seek funding for your own charity.

CriticalCondition · 15/11/2023 11:07

I always assumed you had to have a reasonable level of intellectual ability to do a PhD.
Jodie's performance in that interview has caused me to review that.

Edited

Yes, the fact that the job offer came 'out of the blue, over a cup of coffee', seemingly without any requirement for interview, references, consultation with other trustees or discussion about terms and suitability for the role is a massive stain on ESC's reputation in itself.

Exactly. And while it would still have been an offensively stupid appointment, at least it wouldn't have been all Jodie's fault and would have given her some comeback to Emma's questions other than taking it very personally and getting upset.

CaveMum · 15/11/2023 11:11

@CriticalCondition Sadly it’s pretty common for people who are highly academic to be totally lacking in common sense!

Listening again, great line (abridged)

"With your campaigning history, of which there are records of it online... there is a concern that as a transactivist ... you will not preserve the importance of the word woman."

Dynamite! 🧨

Morred · 15/11/2023 11:12

Also, any sort of rudimentary background check (e.g. googling) on Steph would have warned of some PR concerns at the very least!

ArthurbellaScott · 15/11/2023 11:12

Can't wait to transcribe this later.

WarriorN · 15/11/2023 11:13

Oh if you have the time, it would be marvellous!

I sent a lot by text at 10 am 😄 I'm sure others had got there sooner

mouthgoingsouth · 15/11/2023 11:14

I've just messaged the programme on X to congratulate Emma.

ArenaDavina · 15/11/2023 11:15

I do hope Jane Garvey was listening to this today. I was cringing, hard, as she voiced her unqualified support for Steph yesterday on her Times Radio show yesterday.

I always thought this, till a woman wanted to use my work place for research and demonstrated an insane lack of ability to listen to any advice or information we gave her. Had to say no thank you in the end

CheeseChamp · 15/11/2023 11:20

The interview felt uncomfortable to me. This is a very small charity, set up by small people who are probably challenged in the critical thinking arena. They have been catapulted into the national spotlight when they clearly do not have the communication skills to handle that. I feel sorry for the woman who has clearly been captured by the be kind brigade (or more cynically may have spotted an opportunity for EDI funding by putting so much time and attention into that non issue for this charity's aims). I don't feel sorry for Steph, who has a background that shows she knew exactly what was about to happen, and did it anyway.

It is humiliating for all involved, I think Emma B will be seen as harsh, to be honest - it's not like this charity was ever going to set the narrative on endometriosis issues, surely. Sounds like it's a local charity, for local people. She was asking questions of a level that these people are not qualified or intelligent enough to engage with. Looks like big bully transphobes out to get nice lovely bekind minorities and put upon singlemums who are all sobrave.

Hoping it doesn't go that way and overall useful sunlight and fascinating to see the change of stance in this debate from a BBC show.

Boiledbeetle · 15/11/2023 11:20

Emma did well to keep the rage level at civilised! I couldn't have done that!

Jodie and Steph are bloody Muppets.

I had a conversation once many decades ago with my gynacologist about endometriosis patches being found in strange places, think lungs, other organs, On the surface of your leg etc and he mentioned then that in very rare cases they had also been discovered in men. I remember him saying something about men with cancers and certain types of treatment they had causing it, but that they are so small in number and it's not endometriosis in the way women have endometriosis that statistically they may as well not exist.

I don't imagine Jodies charity is going to cater to anybody but transmen and non binary people by the end of the year. Because any woman with endometriosis if they listen to that interview will walk away and find a charity that has actually got a bloody clue!
