Mn locked me out for the last 10 mins, so frustrating!

WarriorN · 15/11/2023 10:43

I'm rewinding to listen again

Jodie is technically correct here to be fair. Men can suffer from endometriosis even if it is in very small numbers. I thought Emma wasn't being careful enough on that point but otherwise she was fantastic.

Yes, technically correct but a very poor reason to erase women, and indeed uteruses, from the definition of endometriosis.

I wonder if the 29 men diagnosed with the condition suffered 7-10 years of pain and misery before their symptoms were taken seriously?

RoyalCorgi · 15/11/2023 10:45

How does that work, exactly? Surely by definition you have to have a uterus to have endometriosis? (Genuine question - not intended to be read as hostile.)

LilyRed · 15/11/2023 10:45

Thank you wholeheartedly Emma Barnett and Woman's Hour for this interview. Showed Endometriosis South Coast up for what they are...

NellieEllie · 15/11/2023 10:46

Did Jodie say that maybe it’s because it’s been classed as a gynaecological condition that it’s been ignored for 200 yrs? And that it ISN’T one?
I mean I get that there are v rare cases of men with it, but it’s overwhelmingly a gynae condition and MAYBE gynae stuff SHOULD JUST BE TAKEN MORE SERIOUSLY!
Emma got it right - “so we have to rebrand it to include men to be taken seriously?”

Honestly I don't know, I believe it affects the reproductive ducts in (a very small) number of men as an inflammatory disease.

I only mention it as it meant Emma had to backtrack slightly and it was a small weak spot in the interview.

I'm still baffled by that, too.

But Emma's point was that, so we have to take it seriously NOW because 29 men have it so we??

WinterTrees · 15/11/2023 10:47

That was a fantastic bit of radio.

I bet Anita Rani doesn't include it on Weekend Woman's Hour though.

FMLWTF · 15/11/2023 10:48

By chance I caught this absolute balls-up (pun intended) of an interview as I was dashing out in the car. Pulled in to listen properly. Wow. Emma Barnett I have newfound respect for you.

Who are these trustees so keen to push trans issues they will throw women under the bus to save the TWENTY-NINE trans-men (women) with endo? Who is pulling the strings here? What is going on? I think anyone who heard that nonsense will have been peak-transed this morning, if they weren’t already.

Well done Woman’s Hour.

WarriorN · 15/11/2023 10:48

No it has to be nice and fluffy or soulful.

No angry uppity women

I'm so glad she was robust.

Well done Woman’s Hour.

You've mis-heard, it was 29 cases in males and about 5,500 cases (I think) in trans men.

FMLWTF · 15/11/2023 10:50

Even if a teeny tiny number of men can get this, why is that even being mentioned? Would a prostate cancer charity suddenly hire a load of women and wang on about the women with poorly prostates and expect to be taken seriously?

nauticant · 15/11/2023 10:52

That was an amazing interview by Emma Barnett conducted impeccably. I think she'd planned in advance to trigger Richards to say "but what about the men?", ie the vanishingly small component of men who suffer from endometriosis so she could then respond with "you've just proved the point of the critics right, who say that it's not good to have a trans activist leading a charity for women".

I am really going to miss her when she leaves Woman's Hour.

CheeseChamp · 15/11/2023 10:53

Treatment for prostate cancer... isn't that also used as a puberty blocker? So another lovely disease to look forward to if you're an indoctrinated kid 👍

WinterTrees · 15/11/2023 10:55

I would have no objection to a man taking a forward-facing role in the Endometriosis charity in order to promote the fact that Endometriosis has recently been discovered to affect males too, and publicising that particular niche patient demographic in order to speed up diagnosis and support the small (but potentially growing) number of sufferers. I would also have no objection at all in seeing a trans-man appointed to represent the trans and non-binary sufferers of the disease.

Steph's appointment is blatant trolling. Especially given that Steph doesn't appear to give much of a fuck about the job itself.

Editing to add: IF FUNDS ALLOW and can be allocated in proportion to demand.

fedupandstuck · 15/11/2023 10:55

Scientifically, it's interesting to look into the reasons why endo like growths appear in men, in extremely rare cases. It may well help researchers understand more about how endo happens and how to treat it. But, that interesting scientific research area does not mean that endo charities need to mention or even centre the vanishingly few men who it affects. At all.

That's the question. I've seen people insist that men should be included in support groups etc about PCOS because there may be a vaguely similar condition suffered by a tiny number of males. And when I say vaguely, I mean vaguely. And I think...and? Set up support groups etc for that tiny group of men. What the hell has it got to do the women who have PCOS, a condition suffered by 1 in 5 women, which is criminally under-researched and poorly understood.

WarriorN · 15/11/2023 10:59

Listening again, great line (abridged)

"With your campaigning history, of which there are records of it online... there is a concern that as a transactivist ... you will not preserve the importance of the word woman."

Zeugma · 15/11/2023 10:59

Jellycats4life · 15/11/2023 10:42

Jodie sounded like she was close to tears of rage over the idea that endo is primarily a gynaecological disease.

iiuc Jodie rejects womanhood despite suffering from endometriosis so it will be important for Jodie to deny biology and insist that the condition isn’t gynaecological and it doesn’t overwhelmingly affect women who have wombs. Hence the tears on being confronted with reality. Awkward things, facts.

That PhD will be…..interesting.

SelfPortraitWithHagstone · 15/11/2023 10:59

Also that discussion proves the whole bloody point about clear language, because it was impossible to tell for sure whether Jodie genuinely meant men. FFS. 🙄

RoyalCorgi · 15/11/2023 11:00

Jodie is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, is she?
