Rishi Sunak - "a man is a man, a woman is a woman"

..and how we shouldn't be bullied into believing somebody can be any sex that they want.

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGJcxUehh/

AIBU to want to give him a round of applause?

I know, it's convenient timing and obviously a strategy move but how good is it to hear that straight from the horses mouth when the country has spent the past god knows how long bowing down to the loud and often disturbed minority.

I still can't stand the Tories and won't be voting for them but cheers for acknowledging the insanity, Rishi.

I have heard of Rosie Duffield @Flickersy and I think she's great, but she's one politician in the Labour party in a sea of 'transwomen are women' colleagues. Politicians on the left who are openly GC (Joanna Cherry of the SNP is another) are rare.

So why say "none of them" when you know that's a lie?

cheezncrackers · 05/10/2023 08:46

I misspoke. None of them is incorrect. I should've said 'the overwhelming majority of them'. Happy?

AdamRyan · 05/10/2023 08:46

We don't, for example, say "Any man who wanted to, could sneak into a school to abuse children so we don't need safeguarding at schools".

Some men are disgusting fetishists who will go to great lengths to indulge in that fetish. I don't want to have to wonder whether the male bodied person in the toilet is 1) trans or 2) a predatory man a dress who's come in to listen to women having a piss because it turns him on.

At the moment people can challenge people who appear male and are being creepy around womens spaces. That social contract makes it harder for predatory men. Let's not get rid of that ability please.

Justifiedcheese · 05/10/2023 08:50

SIGH.
Another...person willing to overlook the utter failure if this govt. because they imagine this sort of thing is a "victory for women ". The Tories don't give a flying fig about women. They're just desperately fishing for votes amongst the gullible.

IhaveanewTVnow · 05/10/2023 08:51

It might not make me vote Tory but I still won’t vote for Labour or Lib Dem’s. You just have to look at Canada to see the mess they are in. Basically I will have to vote for an independent on county issues.

Someone can have a different opinion to you and not be a TRA.

I wasn't referring to you.

I don't know how many times I have to say it.

I know why he's saying it, I'm not overlooking anything.

The tories are deplorable and unelectable at this stage. Rishi Sunak's statement about biology doesn't change that.

But.. it's important that he has said it.

It needed to come from the very top.

We can all see through his reasons for saying it, we we are just glad that he has because it echos the thoughts of the silent majority who don't feel able to say it because of how far down the rabbit hole the country has gone to appease the TRA's.

@lifeturnsonadime Yes, that's exactly how the posters came across.

I've seen them too, it's disgraceful. Such an awful message for women.

Put up and shut up.

Men are who they say they are. I still think it must be some horrible dystopian dream at times. The fact that this is seen as progressive is beyond my comprehension.

Bananasandcorn · 05/10/2023 09:10

cheezncrackers · 05/10/2023 08:40

Yes, I know Keir Starmer has adjusted his position after Labour focus groups realised in a panic that forcing their leader to say in an interview that 'some women have a penis' was a massive own goal and a huge turn-off for women voters @Bananasandcorn, but there are many others in the Labour party who haven't shifted position. Remember David Lammy with his 'women are dinosaurs hoarding rights' comment? Or Lisa Nandy and Rebecca Long-Bailey signing a 'pledge card' on trans rights before the leadership contest? Just last week the Lib Dem membership magazine had an article from a TRA denouncing GC views and calling them wrong-headed and transphobic.

This is the problem, Starmer says what you want him to say (after you said no one,in labour, will say it) but instead of welcoming, we get "only did it because of focus groups & many other Lab MPs have said x or y" Bailey and Nandy aren't even in the shadow cabinet now.

Why do you think Johnson or Sunak have said these things? yep Focus groups!

Lets face it, you and almost any other Sunak tory supporter are never going to praise Labour, let alone vote for them, you ve one aim, probably don't even care about women rights or spaces and thats to ensure Labour lose votes.

If you did care, you'd look at the track record of 13 years of Tory Govt.

AdrianaLaCerva · 05/10/2023 09:13

Bit awkward for Starmer now that Sunak has made his position clear. I wonder what % of women will have penises according to Labour at their conference. Will it be “not-right” to say that only women have a cervix this year. The suspense!

lifeturnsonadime · 05/10/2023 09:14

Bananasandcorn · 05/10/2023 08:35

Starmer did, months ago.

“A woman is an adult female, so let’s clear that one up,” Starmer stated resolutely, in a marked change to his previous statements on the topic

But as i said earlier, it wont change anyone's mind, he isn't allowed to have a new position.

I'm not a conservative voter, never have been never will be.

But are you suggesting that if Labour can raise finances (how? ) that with good infrastructure and security trans women should be allowed in single sex spaces?

Because that's just not good enough. Women are fully human we should not have to pander to a subset of men who have made it crystal clear that they dgaf about the feelings of women or the fact that their very presence excludes some women.

I am aware that Labour have done some rowing back on this and whilst i know that Sunak is 'just policitiking' he has, as someone said upthread, thrown the gauntlet. These are valid conversations whether you are a Tory or not. This affects ALL women and by that i obviously mean (adult human females).

We are not a subset of males, are needs are not sub par to a group of males who are demanding we move over.

This is what current laws enable. I am well aware that this has happened under Tory watch. Forget the blame, forget the entrenched political views, all women should be interested in this issue, it's a cross party issue. Women make up 51% of the population. All politicians need to do better.

At the moment there is no party I can vote for because of this issue. It should not be this way.

Starmer said this many months ago, long before Sunaks change of heart.

Ask Moudant what she thinks or T.May ?

Both parties have their share!

I’d say they do. It’s a well worn attack but misplaced

I get you’re very pro Starmer and Labour but not everyone is

Starmer has also made his position clear. Woman = adult human female and trans women with a GRC. This is the status quo.
No to self ID and he's also indicated that he will strengthen sex based protections.

I am very happy he's clarified this after Corbyns craziness. I don't think we should be using the penis as a way to distinguish men and women. SRS is invasive surgery with varying quality of outcomes it doesn't create a vagina and we shouldn't be creating pressure on trans people to go through that to "prove" their status.

LadyWithLapdog · 05/10/2023 09:18

The Tories are allowed to U-turn and claim they “misspoke”. It’s the opposition who are held to higher standards. The Tories can literally do whatever they want in government and the die-hard supporters will continue to turn a blind eye.

Bananasandcorn · 05/10/2023 09:18

No i am not at all.

I just judge a book by its cover & everything we all complain about has happened under the Tories, yet for some reason, they are put up as our saviour.

Labour are the only realistic party to replace the Conservatives, so any anti tory posting looks like pro Labour but its a lot more than that.

Slippery words. He still thinks a sub-set of women have a penis. He hasn’t changed his position, he’s just working harder to hide it.

You can read or listen what he said in the Nicky Cambell interview, doesn't appear to want to hide anything.

but as i said earlier, some posters will ignore and keep coming out with same tired rhetoric, maybe take a leaf out of Sunaks book.... change?

AdrianaLaCerva · 05/10/2023 09:25

I’ll change my opinion when he is asked the same 2 questions this year and gives a straight answer - that there are zero % of bepenised women and zero men with a cervix.

Starmer wont give this response though because it’s not what he believes (or not what he pretends to believe)

jacksonspring · 05/10/2023 09:25

Has anyone actually said you can be any sex you want?

Haven’t people said you can be any gender you want?

You may or may not agree with that either, but the fact that Rishi Sunak doesn’t seem to realise there is a difference doesn’t make me think highly of his intelligence.

Honestly I’m ambivalent/sceptical about some aspects of trans ideology, but the sight of one of the most powerful and privileged people in the country throwing what is objectively a marginal and vulnerable community under the bus for the sake of winning votes is also really repulsive.

BIossomtoes · 05/10/2023 09:28

Who’s “we”? It’s not a silent majority, it’s a vanishingly small minority. Most people don’t care.

AdamRyan · 05/10/2023 09:35

Exactly. I think most people accept that some people are trans and their lives are drastically improved by transitioning. And most people are happy to support them.

Forcing this black and white view that trans women are men, and deliberately focusing on genitalia is transphobic in my opinion. And I'm gender critical and have lots of concerns about predatory men, men in sports etc.

For me, Starmers perspective that women are adult human females, and trans women with a GRC are legally women, is the right one. It enables legislation to protect sex based rights and single sex spaces, but prevents discrimination against trans people in social and work settings.

If a man followed me into the women’s toilets I think (if he were with me) that I’d ask my husband to deal with it. He’s as aware of the difference between men and women as I am, and as unhappy at men invading female single-sex spaces.

I thought this, until we got a new bloke at our gym who is at least 6 ft 5 with massive fake boobs and long hair. He has already had a go at one of the PTs for misgendering him. He is bigger than almost all of the male PTs and extremely intimidating. I have stopped using the changing rooms, use only the disabled toilet if I have to go (sorry to the actual wheelchair users that come to the gym), and have left classes more than once due to his behaviour- getting up very close behind me, loud grunting noises, etc.

It's very very scary, and that it is in a public place with others around. I feel pure terror for those female prisoners and hospital patients who don't have the option to leave.
