Poor Billy he can’t be down with the working classes now can he, as an astute businessman who has earned £5 million trading on his working class roots he’s picked up the new bourgeois trans movement as his way into navigate himself into the middle class arts scene and doesn’t it pay to have the right opinions, keep working and keep the bookings rolling in.

Imagine the disappointment if you were hoping for The Proclaimers. Unless there's something I don't know and it turns out they are twats too

I know! As far as I know they aren’t.
on the fb it’s a mixture of people happy he is there- and others really disappointed.

"Total champagne socialist misogynist twat". While I'll agree he is being mysogynistic and a twat he grew up in East London and his socialism is rooted in his background. "Champagne socialist" is not really appropriate.

He once said “There’s not much ideology in politics any more, and what COVID has done is highlight that the real struggle in society is between individual freedom and the concept of the greater good,” he says. Someone should remind him that the "greater good" means preserving rights for females.

Wonder what his wife, Judith, thinks of this. She should understand the need for safe spaces. for women.

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" doesn't seem like advanced political understanding to me, whether they are champagne or not.

He was on as the support act for Paul Heaton at Bridlington Spa last December. He did exactly the same then. I left to go to the bar until Paul came on.

Bloody hell, the frst gig I ever went to in my teens was Billy Bragg supporting The Housemartins and 36 years later nothing has changed!

MassiveWordSalad · 28/08/2023 16:48

Gender critical people say they're disappointed in Billy, they disagree with Billy and they walked out of Billy's gig and don't want to listen to Billy.

No one is wanting to 'cancel' Billy or thinks that Billy doesn't have the right to his opinions. Observe the huge difference in the way gender critical people and pro-trans rights people react and behave in these situations, it's quite illuminating.

Billy Bragg is exactly the sort of man who ought to realise that trans women are men and help to progress the idea that men's spaces ought to be safe for them to use. He shouldn't be telling women they need to accept men in their spaces.

Yes to this!

Coyoacan · 28/08/2023 18:04

People here being told off for not being enthusiast about seeing BB on stage because "Cancel Culture", ggrrr. Cancel culture is when you write to the organisers and owners of the premises to insist that they cancel the artist in question. We do not have attend every horrible event to prove that we do not subscribe to cancel culture.

As for Billy Bragg, I think I could accept him believing that TWAW more than I can accept the way he filters every signle woman out of every conservation.

ArabeIIaScott · 28/08/2023 18:12

Yes. Anyone who wants to go and get a patronising lecture from Mr Clumsy Polemic in B Flat is very welcome to do so.

Women are also free to tell him he's a sanctimonious twit.

Maybe 'sanctimoanious'.

‘Sanctimoanius’ - was I supposed to hear that in my head to the tune of Sexuality? Cos I did 😂

ArabeIIaScott · 28/08/2023 22:27

I've been condescending and it feels never-ending
I've made patronising sneers at women for years
If you have a cunt I will be arrogant
And if you stick around you're sure to hear that moany sound:

Sanctimoanius, a total bore but still cocky
Sanctimoanius, melody does not apply to me

Thanks. It doesn't quite scan, but I figured that is appropriate given the subject.

IwantToRetire · 28/08/2023 23:14

Would walk 500 miles to escape Billy

Yes!

IwantToRetire · 28/08/2023 23:46

Although there's a perception that folkies are all left wing in fact there's a strong strand of English nationalism and the cult of reclaiming old folk songs was more about that. And some groups celebrated re-establishing Albion (the white lands).

(I don't think there was anything similar in Scotland, Wales and Ireland)

But the sucess of Dylan and his (temporary) political influence meant some people claiming to be folk singers become more overtly political (certainly a better option than following Lonnie Donegan into music hall folk).

Billy Bragg was one of those wannabies who relied of being seen as genuinely working class re gurgitating classic "left" slogans, much as others have said as though he was still a 6th form school boy. He is now forced to be a parody of himself and just seems to be stuck on repeat. Its no wonder he has signed up to the left mantra of women can have penises. I just never understand why anyone thought he was worth listening to. He is like something out of some BBC parody of charicatues and the worse thing is he loves this re-affirmation of this.

But to link in with another theme of this thread, it was dominated by men (not so much now). Let's not forget John Peel who many people respected and his open acknowledgement of sex and marriage to underage girls. https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/john-peel-glastonbury-stage-petition-rename-b2116331.html

kelsaycobbles · 29/08/2023 00:21

I boycotted Bragg as I have come across his rubbish before

If you had gone to see baskery instead you would have seen an awesome 3 piece female punk folk band - they are real role models that I missed having as a child.

If you had kept your eyes skinned - I noted one definitions of woman bag and one tee shirts

Shrewsbury tends to have great workshops and open sessions if you have an instrument

StaplerLover · 03/09/2023 19:51

FFS. Am currently at folk festival, listening. He's just so ILLOGICAL. Makes me doubt all the other stuff he says, too. He just repeats tropes, doesn't he? Disappointment doesn't touch it

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/09/2023 20:01

He's being absolutely roasted on Twitter, or should I say X.

Starts around here. https://twitter.com/ewendj/status/1698039890305290734?s=20

Him not answering the question tells us he either has no clue about what blockers are/do, or he does know but won't speak out against them as he fears being cancelled.

Well thank fuck for that, because all I saw here was a lot of men with beards shouting their support and - far more depressingly - lots of young women enthusiastically cheering all their sex based rights and protections away

ApocalipstickNow · 03/09/2023 20:13

Aren’t beta blockers something different?

Yeah, totally different 🤦🏼‍♀️

ScribblingPixie · 03/09/2023 20:21

Did he ever come back and say he did actually understand that puberty blockers aren't the same as beta blockers, because it honestly seemed that he didn't.

He is at Moseley folk festival in Birmingham next weekend too. He replaced The Proclaimers who had to pull out.
Robin Ince is there too who has also shown himself to be a huge misogynist.
My husband was thinking of going but isn’t now.

It's too late now but we were able to switch our tickets to a different day once the announcement was made about the Proclaimers.
Did you go today?

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 03/09/2023 20:32

I hear you.
When I think back to my youth, it was mainly people like Billy Bragg that went on all the protests, performed and was a solid role model (Glasto when it was a CND fundraiser, Red wedge, miners strike etc). I was gutted when I found his views on trans.
