How many of us would be prepared to go the full JKR or Glinner route, seeing what that entails? Not many, I estimate.

Coward as I am, I won’t even dip a toe. And I have nothing to be “cancelled” about. She’s definitely brave in my eyes. For saying anything, even if she thought it was to a handful of close trusted friends.

Ditto. I have nothing to lose but have family members in Arts & Media. It's bloody hard to make a living even without the stasi on your case.

Ibiza music is not my thing cos I'm ancient but ill try and give her support.

Has Panti Bliss condemned her as a tool of the Vatican yet 😂

PatatiPatatras · 27/08/2023 12:01

Oh I used to go up and down a hill to fetch water... in flip flops... for years. could explain the flat feet 🤔
Crap.
And I thought I was saving my feet by not being in heels all day once i started working🙄. I'd ruined my feet already. Eff. Oh well.

Thanks for the explanation. I honestly didn't know. To me it's like walking bare foot which I thought was the best/ most natural anyone could do!

Walking is a hugely complex activity. Unfortunately flip flops do not emulate barefoot walking, they create a kind of "laziness" in the action, warped further with unnatural use of toes.

Good thing I didn't mention knock on to bunions, ankle, knee, hip, back, neck, sciatica, headache...

I wouldn't recommend going back to high heels, but supported arches are critical...at very least well fitting trainers.

Sorry for the bad news.

Hopping on to this thread late to say she played the Connect festival in Edinburgh yesterday and was in great fettle. I’ve thought she’s great since I was a teenager and thought I was the coolest thing in the common room with my copy of Things To Make And Do. No palpable bad feeling in the crowd (the crowd were a bit of a cringe at the festival but for different reasons).

DangerFrog · 27/08/2023 13:02

Thank you @RealityFan - that's really helpful. I know I need to increase the amount of exercise I do and eat better/lose weight. Never been a fan of flip flops but never really been able to explain why - now I do 😘.

Living in Scotland, sunshine is in very short supply so I'm looking at Vitamin D supplements. Lack of VitD seems to be a big thing, especially here in Scotland. I think I'm right in saying there's a suggested link between low VitD and MS, which increases in prevalence as you go further North (and find less sunshine). Thanks to JKR, there is an increase in funding for support and research but there's still but enough known about it. So is Vitamin D deficiency another female issue that we need to be aware of?

I believe now is the time to come out and at least show what side of the fence you're comfortable on.

No need to go full fat Glinner or thorn in the side JKR.

You can just say how you feel, what makes you uncomfortable. People will respect you for frankness and humility.

Yes, it all remains a risk. But I contend 2023 is the first year where it's possible to put your head over the parapet and not have it knocked off by TRAs.

I do believe if she sticks to her guns, her words will be pivotal as time passes. At the very least to encourage the next female (or even male) GC artist to make their views known.

Glad to help. I think there is a big cohort of women who don't see much sunlight. Work in an office all day, exercise in a gym or at home. Rely on home deliveries etc. Could apply to men too.

Particularly an issue with Asian women who are very housebound, often fully covered up for cultural and religious reason.

Vit D is the catalyst to absorb Calcium, you cannot rely on supplements alone, indeed Calcium is badly absorbed this way.

My point is that these patterns are getting worse, nutrition may be going backwards, Instagram Fit seems faddish, and being thin with a six pack is idolised.

Throw in really bad footwear, it's a toxic brew.

And now I'm seeing the first fallout from the trans mania to medicalise.

CampervanKween · 27/08/2023 13:30

What an amazing woman. Fell in love with her when she played Glastonbury last year. If you can find her set, it was amazing. Saw her at a festival this year, she was my highlight. Delighted she feels this way and behind her 100%.

RealityFan · 27/08/2023 16:33

I've just Googled "Roisin Murphy trans" and been taken to a queer/music forum called Popjustice.com

Page after page of tearful and rageful (often both which I find makes you cry thru your nose) invective.

I'm now certain she left the comment, anyone else would have PR back tracking like a mad reverse somersaulter on acid.

She's taking some risk here. Alienating a large swathe (the majority?) of her fanbase quite possibly.

I suspect her radio silence since the FB post is to just see the lay of the land, and assess collateral damage.

The truth? She may have been a gay and queer ally. That was fine up to a decade ago, when LGB organisations pretty much didn't (at) all sign up to the TQ+ agenda.

But as someone growing older as her success has mounted, she will have seen all the things we see, and pulled back.

In the modern age, it's extremely easy to lie, obfuscate or plausibly deny.

In the modern age, it's very hard indeed to be truthful to yourself and then be truthful to the world.

She's made a very brave step indeed.

WarriorN · 27/08/2023 17:45

Oh that's interesting. She's always been v quirky so I can see why they think she's one of them.

Here's her recent woman's hour stint

x.com/bbcwomanshour/status/1681944532298899456?s=46&t=A2fpFNgDRyXF2d6ye97wEA

She's a new album coming out in the autumn; what you can listen to online is varied and fabulous.

She's released a collab with Jessie Ware which certainly 6 music are all over.

She may not get the pride bookings (did Manchester pride and only stuck and rainbow flag emoji in) but I think she's probably going to be going back to more mainstream pop and dance going forward.

I saw a video interview on her fb where when her children ask if she's famous, she said "no, I'm just well known."

I miss goldfrapp; going to revisit some of those too!

One of them? But...isn't she?

I mean isn't that the whole Queer schtick?

That heteros who are a bit rebellious, a bit outré, a bit down'n'dirty celebrating their kinks and faux gay side, can strut alongside the non heteros, the non cis?

But it's a multi destination/journey season bus ticket that comes with some rigorous rules.

And one is that you don't criticise Queer Theory, primarily how it applies to Trans and NB.

Full acceptance of, no Q's asked, no framing things in anything other than pure celebrating, meaning transbians who can go to any lesbian speed dating venue in Central London, protesting to free Sarah Jane Baker, and critically zero dissent on teens medicalising.

She's not sticking to the script. Does she hand back any Queer ID, and the idolising of Queer youth everywhere?

NitroNine · 27/08/2023 18:00

@DangerFrog
Definitely get on those supplements: Scotland only gets the right sunshine April-September 1100-1500; so the NHS recommends taking 10mcg vitamin D/day during Autumn & Winter at least. Given how common it is to be deficient in the UK, year-round supplementation is advisable. Women are more prone than men to becoming vitamin D deficient - including women not in high-risk groups.

Do you mean “I believe the time is now…” waaaaay, I’ll get me coat.
I agree with your post in all seriousness, I think enough sunlight has been poured on the subject that even some quite serious TRAs have started back-pedalling on some of the more outre demands. It’s also such an “online” thing- in the 6 years I’ve been aware of the issue, almost all of my friends have gone from fairly “be kind” to utterly appalled - almost all independently and usually a complete volte- face as soon as they hear about Vancouver Women’s Aid/ puberty blockers for children/ that NZ weightlifter. The peg is becoming well and truly shoogly.

Ugg boots? Known in my line as Ugh! boots, lol.
Now you're all wearing those fluffy slippers that my gran couldn't wait to throw in the bin back in the 50s.
So many choices...all bad.

Until I got to about 13 I only had school shoes and shoes to wear for ‘good’. I too wore either thongs or bare feet, even on gravel- well it was mostly dirt and gravel as there was very little grass to walk on. You are not alone.

My obscure post up thread where she wrote a song about being pregnant that everyone interpreted as super kinky illustrates how she's always just put work out and who likes it likes it.

They've assumed she's 'one of them.' She's just always liked dressing up in the way they did at art school in the 90s. The raver types.

One should put the art out there. And let people find it.

Enough PR and second guessing people.

As Rush said "art as expression, not as market campaigns".

To make it work, I would have loved uggies, but we couldn’t afford them. I had to wear thongs or bare feet through frost. But hey, you quickly learned to run everywhere or you developed tough feet.

Never heard of her before:just given her a follow on Spotify and look forward to listening to her music (good so far👍)

Oh, wow, start with the first Moloko album and go from there. She’s a goddess.

WarriorN · 27/08/2023 18:49

I've been biting my tongue not to start waxing lyrical about feet; another random women's hour thing recently said there were 5 distinct phases for women's feet through their life time! I certainly couldn't do ballet flats anymore after having children.

Lots of barefoot martial arts in my 20s- 30s definitely helped my feet. I do dread my bone density scan though (I'm having one soon) for a range of less bone positive reasons. Been regularly taking vit d for the last 8 years.

Re art; I had the experience of a work of art being interpreted as sexual in a crit when it really wasn't supposed to and was completely flummoxed. They were all a bit disappointed when I said it was actually just xyz. Sex sells.

MavisMcMinty · 27/08/2023 18:53

Very interested in the foot discussion, and would definitely join in a thread about them!

I’d like to add Crocs to the shit-for-feet list, for me at least, always got achey ankles after wearing them and I wore them to work (nursing) for several years.

And I wear wellies a LOT, and get the same awful pain in my ankles afterwards - “welly ankle” I call it, or “wankle” for short.

WarriorN · 27/08/2023 19:04

That word is legally inappropriate for women's ankles now.
