You are safe with me

I saw this on Twitter as David Tennent was wearing one. I’m sure his intention is good but it gave me weird vibes. Can he guarantee that everyone who is wearing one is ‘safe’ to be around? Am I overthinking this?

You are safe with me

That kind of 'safe' is really 'I won't challenge your views ever' isn't it?

EmpressaurusOfCats · 09/08/2023 18:52

No, you’re not overthinking it. I’m sure Tennant means well but it’s creepy and I’d question the motives of anyone who wore one around kids.

JanesLittleGirl · 09/08/2023 18:52

That's like Wayne Couzens saying "Trust me, I'm a policeman".

HagoftheNorth · 09/08/2023 18:52

I’m with you OP, really creepy vibes.

Redshoeblueshoe · 09/08/2023 18:53

Sounds dodgy AF

lady69 · 09/08/2023 18:53

No doubt Jimmy Saville would have DELIGHTED in wearing one of these back in the day, had it existed then.

oviraptor21 · 09/08/2023 18:54

I'd run a mile from that.

FrancescaContini · 09/08/2023 18:55

Really very creepy

Baldieheid · 09/08/2023 18:57

That would make me walk away from him VERY quickly. I read it as a bit "all the better to eat you with, my dear", I'm afraid.

PomegranateOfPersephone · 09/08/2023 19:00

Creepy.

Makes me think of the snake 🐍 in Disney Jungle Book “Trust in meeeeee 🎶”

I should add I don’t find Tennant creepy, just that badge.

Then again I was taught as a child never trust that strangers are who they say they are, always reserve judgement. I think that badge is promoting the opposite and very dangerous philosophy.

RealityFan · 09/08/2023 19:05

It's yet another deliberate ploy on conflating "acceptance" ie your gender ID is accepted, with "safety" ie your chosen gender will never be in danger from person wearing the badge, because they've accepted you for who you are.

Of course, no thought given to the ramifications of this.

Boiledbeetle · 09/08/2023 19:14

what a very strange message to stick on a badge. I get what it's trying to say but it's so open to abuse by bad faith actors.

Good people don't tell you they are good people.

Only bad people tell you they are good people.

That badge gives off bad person vibes.

Helleofabore · 09/08/2023 19:15

That is a very irresponsible badge.

PermanentTemporary · 09/08/2023 19:18

I am certain that anyone would be safe around David Tennant.

But it doesn't feel very thought through. Reminds me of You Can Pee Next To Me t-shirts. What, literally anyone? Anywhere?

FrancescaContini · 09/08/2023 19:18

It reminds me of how I feel if a man says he’s honest. I then assume that he isn’t, and am very wary of him.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 09/08/2023 19:19

It’s a groomer’s dream.

What would be of actual practical use IMO would be a campaign to make it safe for everyone to use the correct toilets for their sex without fear of being beaten up or whatever. Men like David Tennant & Owen Jones using the ‘You can pee with me’ hashtag & offering their services as company / support if needed.

Sorry, crosspost! I do think there’s something in my idea though.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 09/08/2023 19:22

Was the shop out of Child Catcher badges, David?

I very much doubt DT himself is a threat to any child. But he is working quite hard to enable those who are.

rabbitwoman · 09/08/2023 19:25

Who gives these away, and what criteria do you need to meet to get one? Is there an exam, a check?

Otherwise, anyone could get one, much like a Jim'll Fix It badge.....

LakeTiticaca · 09/08/2023 19:29

Safe with me as long as you agree with my opinions?
Ugh creepy and weird I would be running very fast in the opposite direction

Bellablahhole · 09/08/2023 19:31

This 👆is what first hit me too. I'd tell my gc's to run a mile if they saw someone wearing that badge 🤨

AmaListening · 09/08/2023 19:31

I don't think David is guaranteeing anything about others who wear a similar badge.

By wearing it, he's simply saying: I am a safe place if you're LGBTQ+ because I accept you.

Which is a much needed message for many people, and if my child identified as gay, bi, trans, non-binary etc, I'd feel greatly supported by other adults around them wearing such badges.

EddieMunsen · 09/08/2023 19:33

Safeguarding nightmare.
