IamSarah · 04/08/2023 09:15

Confirmed this morning.

www.theargus.co.uk/news/23699795.eddie-izzard-run-labour-mp-candidate-brighton/

This is my local constituency so I have Tweeted Eddie asking if women in Brighton & Hove can rely on Eddie's support in our bid to secure the option of single sex rape crisis therapy.

Let's see what the response is.

What are the odds of the Tories taking Brighton Pavilion? Must be worth a punt if the Izzard of Was splits the luxury opinion vote. Could be spit 3 ways with the Lib Dims.

Get yer money on !

ThisIsMyGCname · 05/08/2023 16:02

I’ve young friends living in Brighton who hate the Greens as they are so inept at local government. Would they vote for Izzard as Labour though?

@BernardBlacksMolluscs - here’s the screenshot I say on Twitter but the user didn’t quote the source.

Good lord. That's so tone deaf as to almost need a different term to describe it.

Starmer must be bricking it.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 06/08/2023 07:42

I think even if he did get selected and elected there’s no way he’d last the full term. Being an MP is actually quite a mundane and difficult job. Even the attention seekers (yes Jess Phillips were looking at you) actually do quite a lot of hard graft which attracts little notice. it’s not a job for a showbiz look at me type.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 06/08/2023 07:44

Also, local party members really do have a strong preference for local candidates. Occasionally central office parachutes someone in but they are usually pretty good people. I don’t see little Keir doing this for Eddie

This quote is so over the top but also quite good at putting Starmer in spotlight

Is he going to stop that ott thing, but Eddie believes it, happening or do it. Either way it’s got blowback written on it

CloudyMcCloud · 06/08/2023 09:02

And are they going to have a song and dance about Eddie changing pronouns / clothes when they haven’t had a female leader at all

It may not be a bad thing, in terms of making people think what is going on

nzborn · 07/08/2023 15:30

So he's on a bottle with Edinburg Gin promoting the festival, I unsubscribed and told them why via email.

Tanith · 07/08/2023 16:41

He's gone for Brighton because it's one of the very few places that might vote him in just because he's trans.
He's failed to get elected to a number of positions within the party, and a few as Labour's representative, the latest being Sheffield, where his campaign seems to have consisted of "Look at me: I'm trans!", "Oh yeah, and I went to uni here, too." and very little else.

He still has to be selected to stand in the General Election and I think he'll still have a tremendous battle on his hands. He's actually not that popular with Labour party members and he's done very little to change that.

RavingStone · 04/08/2023 14:26

You know where you are with a right wing misogynist. And wherever you are they probably want you in the kitchen dressed up like a trad wife. At least you can still have private life away from them and form a resistance while they're busy running the world.

Left wing misogynists want you at work, in the kitchen, and also in the kitchen at work. Moreover, they've identified as your spokesperson and now run the resistance as well as running the world.

😂

Nice.

CruCru · 09/08/2023 09:27

This is really annoying. I grew up in Brighton. It is quite different from most of the rest of the country but it still has some fairly serious social problems. It needs a serious politician to be its MP, not someone there to put on a show - it gets enough of that.

Beowulfa · 09/08/2023 10:16

To be fair, his campaign also included telling locals that he could use his London celebrity and general fabulous London-ness to help put Sheffield on the map.

that's what I mean. he should definitely be allowed to be a very public proponent of operation let them speak

I should imagine that went down well. Northerners just love being subservient to London, right?

Menopausehaver · 09/08/2023 16:08

Oh yes I can imagine Yorkshire people just loving hearing about how much better Londoners are

Heliotroper · 09/08/2023 16:51

Didn't he call the other candidates "supercharged councillors "

Menopausehaver · 09/08/2023 18:24

Supercharged councillors isn’t the insult Eddie thinks it is. If you do it well it’s a lot of work for expenses but no pay and it involves looking at potholes and grass cutting

GrabbyGabby · 09/08/2023 18:50

So, he used to be a man in a frock. Now he is one of us, because reasons (and this stunning and brave transformation coincides with him getting serious about getting into parliament.

No man in a frock would be voted in, as he well knows, but riding the coatails of the trans express might just do the trick.

I would have had so much respect had he run as a gender non confirming man. He could have broken so many taboos. Now he is just the latest on the TRA bandwagon.

HRTQueen · 09/08/2023 18:54

So shall be running as Eddie I thought he was now mainly Suzie

I guess he needs financial backing

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 10/08/2023 06:25

GolgafrinchamB · 04/08/2023 12:21

Did you see the bit where he compared himself to Obama? The sheer arrogance.

Don't think Izzard stopped at London either. Didn't he/she/they prattle on about his/her/thems Hollywood connections and how he could put little old Sheffield on the global map. What am absolute plank.

Yes there were a lot of unbelievable moments in that campaign the thread following it has some amazing stuff: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4653015-sheffield-central-labour-candidate-abtisam-mohamed-vs-eddie-izzard

The Brighton campaign if anything is going to be even more messy as Labour in Brighton Pavilion are aiming to defeat the Greens. Going to be an interesting contest. What Eddie will come up with this time one wonders.

Sheffield Central Labour Candidate - Abtisam Mohamed vs Eddie Izzard | Mumsnet

If you are based in Sheffield please lend your support to Abtisam Mohamed a strong local woman candidate, a solicitor of Yemeni descent and longstandi...

I have to admit I'll lol a bit if top TRA ally and Challenor champion Sian Berry loses Brighton to Izzard.

mrshoho · 10/08/2023 16:56

We can all sit back with our 🍿

CruCru · 10/08/2023 19:24

Brighton Pavilion is quite a mixture of areas. The parts closer to the centre are more affluent but, once you get further out, there are some far less well off people. In the past there have been some school problems (not enough places, school black holes, a couple of schools that people really want and a few that had to advertise on the local radio). The area around Patcham has New Age travellers who turn the local field into an all day and night rave site.

Brighton Council have had a whole bunch of bin strikes lasting weeks at a time (it drove my Dad crazy). People living in the centre (like my parents) often don’t have cars so they can’t just take bags of rubbish to the dump. The Council also have a policy that they won’t weed the pavements - this sounds great (and green) but is difficult for anyone old, sick or disabled. The pavements look a bit like the set of The Last Of Us.

Brighton really needs politicians who are going to care about this stuff.
