Confirmed this morning.

www.theargus.co.uk/news/23699795.eddie-izzard-run-labour-mp-candidate-brighton/

This is my local constituency so I have Tweeted Eddie asking if women in Brighton & Hove can rely on Eddie's support in our bid to secure the option of single sex rape crisis therapy.

Let's see what the response is.

What's he going to campaign on?

My slogan, manifesto and programme is: Middle aged men in lipstick! Unite and chase teenaged girls out of their toilets! ?

Brighton Pavilion is quite a mixture of areas. The parts closer to the centre are more affluent but, once you get further out, there are some far less well off people. In the past there have been some school problems (not enough places, school black holes, a couple of schools that people really want and a few that had to advertise on the local radio). The area around Patcham has New Age travellers who turn the local field into an all day and night rave site.

Brighton Council have had a whole bunch of bin strikes lasting weeks at a time (it drove my Dad crazy). People living in the centre (like my parents) often don’t have cars so they can’t just take bags of rubbish to the dump. The Council also have a policy that they won’t weed the pavements - this sounds great (and green) but is difficult for anyone old, sick or disabled. The pavements look a bit like the set of The Last Of Us.

Brighton really needs politicians who are going to care about this stuff.

You have this very wrong. Some of the most affluent areas of Brighton are on the outskirts, including Patcham. Also there are no travellers having raves. I know the site you mean and I never hear a whisper from them.

It's not down to the greens that the pavements aren't weeded. It's a coalition. We have a green mp but the local council is a coalition.

I would have so much respect for Izzard if he could repeat his 90s line about just being a bloke who sometimes wears different clothes, and then show some interest in bin collections and parking.

SidewaysOtter · 09/08/2023 14:43

I should imagine that went down well. Northerners just love being subservient to London, right?

Yeah - I was just trying to list his positive selling points Grin

But the line about being a lesbian trapped in man's body really ain't funny any more

Haha good article- thanks for the link.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 09/12/2023 18:22

Im convinced the person who runs 'izzard for brighton' twitter accounts hates him. Its probably a local resident.

Holeinamole · 09/12/2023 18:29

Julie Burchill modelling the best way of dealing with special pronouns I’ve seen so far … nicely done.

irishmurdoch · 09/12/2023 21:12

Apparently Tom Gray, the other candidate up for selection against him, has made it known he's GC.

Well that's him fucked then.

irishmurdoch · 10/12/2023 10:09

I don't think he's come out publicly and said it, as, yes - he probably would be fucked. But I attend a feminist group along with several women active in local politics and their tip is that he is probably our best bet.

Tootsweets23 · 10/12/2023 16:38

Anyone know when the election for the Labour candidate will be? Izzard's campaign on social media anyway is a car crash.

Hicc · 10/12/2023 16:57

Hustings are on 17th Dec.
Questions for the hustings must be submitted by 14th Dec.
Postal vote must be applied for by 13th Dec and completed BEFORE the hustings.

You have to have ID to be admitted to the hustings, and be a Labour Party member since May. You have to stay from start to finish to qualify to vote (latecomers may not be able to vote) The vote will be counted at the end of the hustings.

There is a Google form to submit questions that requires a name, so I assume only LP members are allowed to submit questions.

Hicc · 10/12/2023 17:01

PM me if you have any specific questions you want asked. The local selection committee will chose questions to go forwards, so no guarantees.

I will be emailing the candidates directly with questions though, and see what happens.

The process does feel rather rushed.

Will the vote be immediately after the hustings? Otherwise it's cutting it rather fine.

The email states:

'The count will be held immediately following the hustings meeting and the result announced following completion of the count.'

RoyalCorgi · 10/12/2023 18:27

Thanks, Hicc. Something to look forward to! Very curious as to whether Eddie will get the candidacy. If anywhere is likely to select him, it's Brighton.

I think a good question to ask the candidates would be about Sarah Surviving and whether as a rape survivor she has the right to access a single-sex support group.

Chersfrozenface · 14/12/2023 11:26

And as an aside, isn't he a little old to play Hamlet? What role is he going to take? Gertrude? Polonius? Gertrude and Polonius? Ophelia?

TBF, he's not as old as Ian McKellen, who played Hamlet in 2021 at the agd of 82.

Also TBF McKellen is a proper actor

Still, we're all age-fluid now, aren't we?

fedupandstuck · 14/12/2023 11:30

@IcakethereforeIam it's a one-man show, so Izzard is taking on all the roles in Hamlet...

JamSandle · 14/12/2023 11:31

He would be a disastrous choice for women and girls.
