Women's rights general conversations - Thread 6

Continuation of Thread 5.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Ah - I wondered if that was you.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/10/2023 17:52

What outrageous things did you say?

MavisMcMinty · 10/10/2023 17:57

Said I couldn’t read a book by anyone who thinks trans women are women, they’re not, sorry for the LITERAL VIOLENCE but no amount of wishing can make that particular dream come true.

Too harsh?

IcakethereforeIam · 10/10/2023 18:01

😃

MavisMcMinty · 10/10/2023 17:51

I was deleted in one minute flat.

Shame, I'd just recommended your comment!

Ah - I wondered if that was you.

Thought the same! 😁Are Guardian readers such delicate flowers these days that they need to be shielded from adult conversation?

IcakethereforeIam · 10/10/2023 18:13

Have you read the 'look it up' comment? 🤡

MavisMcMinty · 10/10/2023 18:14

Yes! “Do your own research!”

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 10/10/2023 18:21

I did, cake. Lady brains! Didn't know those were still about.

IcakethereforeIam · 10/10/2023 18:25

I seriously thought about making an account just to post a reply to that, which would be insta-killed. But I couldn't be arsed. I think I might have covid, between that, hot flushes and disturbed sleep....I'm tired.

Britinme · 10/10/2023 18:38

I wondered whether to try and reply to that 'lady brains' comment, but my existing comment is still there and I don't want to post twice. I wish somebody else would put Mr "Look it up" right though.

I would but I can't. I'm not commenting as you'd all find out the name of my other internet persona!!

I'd totally forgotten I used to comment on the Guardian back when it was a sensible newspaper and I'm too lazy to make a new account!

CrossPurposes · 10/10/2023 19:40

I naively used to imagine that deleted comments on the Guardian were probably outrageous or crude or abusive (etc) but this was deleted.

I'm amazed mine is still there. Obviously I'm not offensive enough.

Winterborne74 · 12/10/2023 09:37

The opposition is so dim you almost feel sorry for them. Surely the could have found a better spokesperson than Johnny here? Well done to the young journalist for letting both sides speak for themselves: the contrast couldn’t be clearer. Were it not for the bullying and intimidation it would be funny.

ColinTheGenderMinotaur · 12/10/2023 10:02

Johnny seems clueless to what he’s actually protesting about.

Winterborne74 · 12/10/2023 10:22

Disobedient women. It’s provocation enough, isn’t it?

IcakethereforeIam · 12/10/2023 10:28

I can only see the first post! Has it been unrolled?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 12/10/2023 10:34

Thank you @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn weren't those women lovely?

As for Johnny, he seems well meaning but he may just as well have said 'I'm a flying monkey'.

I'm struggling to believe that there were threats being made by supporters of the book and the launch event. I'd like to see evidence of that.

If the objectors were mistreated by security, I wonder if the context was them being removed from blocking the access to the room where the launch was?

Winterborne74 · 12/10/2023 11:01

Surely threats is code for having opinions that make someone uncomfortable? Just as unsafe is code for uncomfortable.

The protest organisers accused Kathleen Stock and Shereen Benjamin of being violent transphobes. These people invert the meaning of words.

IcakethereforeIam · 12/10/2023 11:15

He said 'threats made by the event organisers and supporters of the event'. As it's not prefixed by 'transphobic' I assumed he meant actual threats. I bet he means legal. Which would explain the University actually facilitating the event, instead of doing the bare minimum and letting the activists stop it.

Of course, as a flying monkey, he may have just been told threats and been left to make the worst interpretation. I wish he'd been asked about the threats.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 12/10/2023 11:36

Speaking of 'people not having any idea what they're doing': for those not following the Jo Phoenix tribunal thread, it has just been revealed that the (at the time) head of HR for the OU (and current tribunal witness) has never actually read her grievance.

MouseMinge · 12/10/2023 13:22

Given that Johnny hasn't read the book and doesn't know what's in it but has been told it's transphobic it's likely that he hasn't seen or heard any threats but been told about them, so, you know, it must be true.

Fair play to him though, he isn't wearing a mask. He's just an earnest boy who's currently (and unknowingly) identifying as a lemming.

StephanieSuperpowers · 12/10/2023 13:46

What an extremely damaging and humiliating admission in court. Well, in theory, if not a gender thing, in which case she wasn't sullying her pure mind with transphobia, I imagine.

Trust me, bro.
