Continuation of Thread 5.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I went to see a recording of the News Quiz last night. My fella told me a while ago he'd got tickets, and I, under the impression it was the Now Show, agreed to go. I stopped listening to it when Corbyn stopped being flavour of the week and I properly realised how insincere and fickle the panellists were. It didn't help it was Tory Conference week and a guy with a very loud, performative laugh was sat just behind me and he found everything funny. My takeaways were Art Garfunkle has let himself go, the correct pronunciation of 'Bravermann' and four blokes and Susan McCabe tell everyone it's only pronouns. They dismissed 'luxury beliefs' as a synonym for 'morals', then I read this article in the Times, which has been archived, on the same subject

Because of the stupid early time you have to check in I wasn't even treated to a meal out 😐

dunBle · 06/10/2023 13:07

And amazingly, three days later it still hasn't been moved over here. I wonder why that might be? 🤔

Britinme · 07/10/2023 13:37

Well done the Roanoke women's swimming team standing in solidarity with each other. www.telegraph.co.uk/swimming/2023/10/06/roanoke-college-fury-trans-swimmer-squad-lia-thomas/

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 07/10/2023 14:10

Oh, well done! That took courage.

DameMaud · 07/10/2023 14:40

Didn't know where best to post this.
Haven't heard much about Anna Loutfi (bad law project)- but from this interview, she strikes me as an under-heard, incredibly powerful and articulate voice. Right up there with Helen Joyce. I don't know why we haven't heard her more publicly? Especially stirring final 20 mins about the need for society to hear the wise and strident voices of older women . I also noted how quiet Julian Vigo was- compared to the usual dialogues. She just let Anna speak- as her thoughts and words just flow so powerfully.
Anyway, I for one, would like to hear more from her!

I was suitably amused by this "scholarly" article wordcloud mantle of pseudo-intellectual linguistic masturbation which does a poor job of disguising the underlying juvenile Good vs Bad emoting*. No, correction, I was suitably amused by the razor-sharp FWRs cutting it to shreds.

*My opening sentence there reminds me of a poster I used to know in Another Place Wink

‘Philosophical problems with the GC feminist argument against trans inclusion’ | Mumsnet

A friend pointed me in the direction of this journal and I don’t really understand what it is trying to say. Can anyone paraphrase and/or critique it...

only one of 'em?

duc748 · 09/10/2023 11:11

I read the first paragraph, and then I thought... life's too fucking short.

Britinme · 09/10/2023 11:26

Me too @duc748

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 09/10/2023 11:27

Same here. I do this more and more lately.

angelico53 · 09/10/2023 11:37

It's old hat. He is denying that women are at risk; that men are not women and that transvestites are not at risk in mens areas. it's incoherent rubbish and incredibly condescending. Perhaps it is someone we know.

MouseMinge · 09/10/2023 21:03

I started reading it and stopped because it was total and utter balderdash. My head can only take on so much bullshit in one day. I reached my limit this afternoon, so a big no thank you to that idiot.

Gonners · 09/10/2023 21:30

The only interesting thing about it is that it's on sagepub, so he paid to have it published.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/10/2023 15:13

I have written a very carefully considered, reasonable, taking-no-sides, 'need to be aware contentious issue should probably get advice before taking position' post in our Union executive chat.

Am having wobble about pressing 'post'.

It shouldn't be this hard!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/10/2023 15:27

Can't decide whether to include 'probably fine to say X/might get us into legal hot water to say Y' example or not.

Winterborne74 · 10/10/2023 15:32

It shouldn't be hard but it often is - sympathies.

It depends what the subject is, and what the examples are. Not much help - but there is not much to go on!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/10/2023 15:41

Guilty of vagueposting, as charged.

Part of the problem is that we've been asked to comment on something almost as vague. Whether to sign/ask members to sign an open letter saying certain Tory conference speeches are harmful and we disagree.

No text of letter available, or explicit reference to which bits of the speeches (but strong hints it's about the 'men are men' stuff).

Think I've decided I won't add examples of what might be OK/not OK to say.

StephanieSuperpowers · 10/10/2023 16:09

We had a bit of a discussion along related lines in our union committee. We've largely decided to only comment if it becomes unavoidable (so far there's no mention of any of this kind of thing) and with an emphasis on respecting the rights of people of all opinions.

Oddly though, once the subject was casually broached, all of the committee are of exactly the same opinion with regard to the substantive issue. You may find the same...

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/10/2023 16:25

Indications so far are decidedly the other way.

StephanieSuperpowers · 10/10/2023 16:28

Oh that's a shame.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 10/10/2023 17:25

No doubt they'll soon announce that 'comments were opened in error' and they'll disappear.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 10/10/2023 17:39

Hm, the deletions have begun...

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/10/2023 17:50

Sod it. I'm pushing the button.

MavisMcMinty · 10/10/2023 17:51

I was deleted in one minute flat.
