Women's rights general conversations - Thread 6

Continuation of Thread 5.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

It does sound very much like the two minute hate.

And people do actually believe they can change their sex.

Not long ago on a thread not far away, a poster claimed that taking cross-sex hormones caused changes in the dna so that people actually … because biology innit.

It is do sad. Lied to, chemically experimented on and carved up whilst paying for it too.

Poor old puffed up Pete, the paedo's pal.

A political party that might fill the 'Who the hell do I vote for?' gap? Skeleton manifesto so far, with only 1 mention of women's rights:
https://www.trueandfairparty.uk/crime_and_safety but at least no mentions of plans to undermine women's rights.

CRIME AND SAFETY

More decent stuff in there than I expected, tbf. Them or the Communists, then!

Gonners · 11/09/2023 18:38

Are there any communists these days? My late not-technically-MIL was a proper commie in 1940s/50s New York, which led to some unfunny fun and games in her children's upbringing. When we first got together, Sir rang her and banged on about this woman he'd met and she said "Yeah yeah yeah ... never mind all that! What are her politics?" He told her "Well, she's basically an anarchist" to which MIL replied "Well that's okay then."

Have just posted this on another thread but thought it might be of interest here too -

It’s led by Gina Miller, who isn’t a TWAW proponent is she? Shame there’s no candidate in my area.

Gonners · 11/09/2023 20:36

Gosh, Bint - jolly good luck to them with their violently revolutionary proposals about women!

I saw that and the sanctimonious message from the Quakers, which led me to a quick perusal of their twitter account. Lots of identikit messages to various people and organisations denying them the use of their rooms because the Quakers deemed them antisemitic, at least one of those people was Jewish. And....I never watched Fleabag, know nothing much about it (something about a hot priest!?), perhaps if I'd seen it I wouldn't have found all the stuff about Quaker meetings being 'erotic' so creepy.

duc748 · 12/09/2023 11:01

Even groups almost universally thought of as 'good people' are no bloody help. Can only hope for the oxygen of publicity to do its best.

IcakethereforeIam · 12/09/2023 13:58

@SqueakyDinosaur that's interesting. It seems the Quakers, as an organisation, have now picked a side.

Kucinghitam · 12/09/2023 15:10

That was an interesting read @SqueakyDinosaur and it seemed to me like the Norwich Quakers tried very hard to be even-handed. I wonder how the same piece would be perceived by TRSOHers...

Meanwhile, here's something that would be greatly applauded by TRSOHers:

I am a Quaker in theory as I am a member of my local Friends Meeting but I have only been to meeting for worship once since the pandemic sent us to Zoom, and in the intervening time atheism has overwhelmed my attachment to it, though in general I think they are a great bunch of lads who do their best to do what they see as the morally right thing. We have a couple of NB people in our meeting, and the sense seems to be "be kind", and nobody has yet challenged the implications of that. I don't feel like taking it on. Any decision takes a really long time in a Quaker meeting when there is any disagreement. DH is on the Buildings and Grounds committee, and has been trying for at least five years to get agreement on whether to replace a very old gas boiler and with what. The decision to pave the parking lot because the drains in the street were getting filled up with gravel washing down from it took four or five years.

Quick explainer: If a woman smiles as masked men surround her in the street shouting "FUCK [insert her name here}", she must have enjoyed it and has no cause to complain. If she cries, she's weaponising her tears. I think that covers it.

Christ, Bragg has made me ashamed to be a man again. That and the BBC cancelling Roisin (all over the twitter) hasn't started my day well.

Binturong, that's absolutely the case for me, I haven't been taken seriously on several occasions.

There was one time some years ago when I had a bad fall at work, landing hard on one knee on a stony drive way, and had a very swollen knee and bruising from my knee to ankle. I limped into the community hospital and was dismissed with 'It'll be better in a couple of weeks' and sent home with no painkillers, despite me saying I worked a very physical job. It took TEN years to get better. Meanwhile, shortly afterwards, a male friend who worked in an office with a hurty knee went to the same hospital and got given powerful painkillers and lots of sympathy. He was fine after a few days.
