Wow. Equating it with anti semitism. Loved the thoughtful “whatever”. There says the privileged man.

Archbishop of Canterbury: Cut university funding if students insulted

The Archbishop of Canterbury has said that universities should face funding cuts if they allow minorities such as transgender or Jewish students to be insulted

What does he have to say about the epidemic of sexual assault and harassment towards 50% of the student population which is actually happening?

Nothing? It's just men's right's activism.

redfacebigdisgrace · 07/07/2023 09:16

To add, of course no one should be bullied or insulted. However by saying I think a trans woman is a man am I insulting them? I bet they would say so. So therefore to state biological reality I am insulting them and University funding should be cut. Chilling.

Men's rights activism sort of describes a lot of religions, including Christianity, so we shouldn't really be surprised. The problem is men like this having any platform at all in a society where women are supposed to have human rights.

Reality is offensive. How's this meant to work exactly?

Welby makes me ashamed of having been a member of the Anglican Church.

Same

It's none of Welby's business - he needs to stick to religion.

Sadly, as Archbishop, he is the Chancellor of Canterbury Christchurch University.

Tbf, with regards to gender ideology, he kind of is. However, it's not his church. Perhaps, like Stonewall, he's looking at his aging and dwindling congregations and sees this as a way of being relevant again.

It seems that Christian (and Jewish?) denominations which have opened up the priesthood to women have all also decided that men can be women if they say so. It makes me wonder if it is backlash, a way of putting us back in our place by a different means.

Or perhaps it is simply that if only men can be priests allowing women to identify as men and then become priests would make a nonsense of that rule.

It seems like a reflection of wider society. As is often noted, men haven’t wanted to claim womanhood in times or places when/where women couldn’t vote, own property, have paid employment, run businesses, be in the professions or the military, leave the house unchaperoned, drive a car, present in public in highly sexualised clothing (not sure actual women get away with this anywhere even now), etc

Being Chancellor is an honorary position. He should not be meddling in the policies of universities.

Sure. However, he has that position

I agree that what he is saying seems to be ill thought through or just wrong in equating anti semitism with gender identity ideology. The two are not symmetrical at all.

Kevinscousin · 07/07/2023 09:46

Wow these marginalised souls have got it all sewn up haven't they? The State, The Army, The Schools and now the Church. Bless their frilly knickers.

Kevinscousin · 07/07/2023 09:48

And comparing criticism of gender ideology with antisemitism is disgusting

YetAnotherSpartacus · 07/07/2023 09:50

The Archbishop of Canterbury has said that universities should face funding cuts if they allow minorities such as transgender or Jewish students to be insulted.

So, women who are insulted by being called non-men,chestfeeders and so on then?

The Most Rev Justin Welby’s intervention comes after a series of disputes over free speech on campus, including protests against a talk at the Oxford Union by Kathleen Stock, the gender-critical philosopher.

What did KS say that was insulting, exactly? The insinuation here is that she was insulting.

Welby was speaking at an event hosted by the Board of Deputies of British Jews at the Bevis Marks Synagogue in London. He was responding to Simon Sebag Montefiore, the historian, on a question of what more could be done to protect Jewish students targeted with antisemitic abuse on campus.
Welby said: “You can’t stop things happening once or twice. You can stop them becoming a habit. Universities that allow it to be tolerated if there is systemic, ‘anti’ any category, whether it’s Jewish people, Jewish societies, whether it’s trans people — whatever it is, whether you agree with them or not — should have really quite serious consequences in terms of the recognition of their authority, their position. And their funding.”

So let's scour for misogynistic deeds, words and acts then...

Or don't women count?

Would they be stolen frilly knickers from a washing line by chance?

RedToothBrush · 07/07/2023 09:56

Did this guy just buy into the transwomen had to steal knickers bullshit too?

Honestly having read that tweet this week and now seeing Welby advocating this, all I can think of is the priest in the department store scene.

medianewbie · 07/07/2023 10:01

Welby is a Fool. But, as Archbishop of Canterbury & Rector of Christchurch College, he should keep his vague I'll thought out ramblings to himself.

medianewbie · 07/07/2023 10:02

Apologies: Chancellor not Rector.
(still A Fool though!)

Even harder to stomach is that the college is in fact a uni.
