COO of Wickes insulting 90% of its potential and actual customer base? thanks for the headsup. Doing an expensive (five figure) flat refurb and that's one off the list for supplies.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/06/2023 13:34

Christ.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/06/2023 13:35

ISTR Wickes have been prominent on this idiocy before. Who gives a shiny shit what a DIY store opines about gender identity ideology?

Fenlandia · 15/06/2023 13:37

I've only got as far as the "non binary pharaoh" and I've got a headache already.

Not really a job they would be interested in. They prefer bigger jobs.

This reminds me of when Natwest made a submission to the GRA consultation about the spousal consent clause in the GRA recommending its removal. WTF does it have to do with them?

Wickes are awesome allies to LGBT people. Really happy to support them. They stand up, and don't allow bigotry which is leading light in the building and construction and DIY industry.

Most just want to buy stuff when they go. The support they give to minorities and the community is an added bonus.

Go them!

Paint and fittings and flooring and the like all add up. If they can afford to turn down someone using them to buy that amount of supplies then no skin off mine. Are you telling me that they don't want customers who just buy something like a showerhead or a set of taps?

FTR I've always found ridiculous 'we don't want these sort of customers in our stores' - because unless they interrogate you at the door they've no idea what opinions you hold. Still, it does support my contention that there are some very stupid people around and unfortunately, they have a lot of power.

5 figure jobs are exactly the sort of jobs wickes would supply, anything much larger would be going through a larger construction supplier.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 15/06/2023 13:49

I have no idea why that person was mocking an imaginary woman who didn't want to share a public toilet with 'Colin' which she wouldn't have to anyway, when the entire manufactured moral panic is because some males don't want to share with 'Colin'.

Trans conferences are well beyond the remit of Wickes. If the company wants to do something useful then it should work on improving disability access and selling tools and aids suitable for people with reduced mobility. This may be relatively low cost but given the bigoted and offensive content of the conference it is far outweighed by the damage done by its links.

Not in my case 😄

RS components, a well known electrical company that supplies tradies, have jumped on this bandwagon although I don't think they went to that summit. They have actually changed their logo from red to rainbow this month and all their social media is trans activist bollocks from people with (she/her) on their names at the moment instead of posts about electrical components. I've lost all respect for them and now hate having to deal with them. What the purple FUCK has this bollocks got to do with trade suppliers like Wickes and RS? What idiot has been given their social media and why isn't anyone with half a brain actually checking what's being posted and stopping them all from making such prats of themselves?

Has anyone told RS their catalogue is transphobic? A search for "female" gives 33, 392 results for various items, designed to use with their male counterparts.

I've used Wickes a lot - both click & collect and delivery - as they're very competitive pricewise and their customer service is really great. The product reviews are also often really informative. Highly recommended.

Florissante · 15/06/2023 14:28

Why is a home improvement store getting involved in politics? The CEO saying "anyone who disagrees with him on this topic [are] “bigots” before saying that they are “not welcome in our stores anymore”.

I'm planning on doing some renovation work on my house but won't be buying any supplies from Wickes.

Thingybob · 15/06/2023 14:29

Another good article by James Esses although I think he maybe mistaken calling Dr Jack Doyle a medical professional. According to LinkedIn his doctorate is in 1st World War history!

Feckedupbundle · 15/06/2023 14:45

I've worked in the construction industry. Big builders are not going to use Wickes, that's laughable.Wickes are a retail company, for the DIY market.
They have previous form for this. I built a house and didn't use Wickes for anything.

littleripper · 15/06/2023 14:47

I'd imagine straight white men form the majority of their customer base - why are they so bigoted against their own customers?

zibzibara · 15/06/2023 14:56

The panel also featured the Chief Operating Office of Wickes, the large home improvement retailer, Fraser Longden. Longden shockingly called anyone who disagrees with him on this topic "bigots" before saying that they are "not welcome in our stores anymore".

There's a Wickes right nearby where I live. I was planning to buy some paint this weekend to spruce up the bathroom, good to know in advance that I'll have to plan a trip to B&Q or Homebase instead. Thanks Fraser!

StephanieSuperpowers · 15/06/2023 15:06

Well, they aren't obliged to accept money from anyone who they find morally reprehensible. Which is fine. Not the typical retail business model, but these are exciting times.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 15/06/2023 15:12

Another one perplexed why a big company like Wickes would get involved in insulting customers / extreme trans activism? The Bud Lite & Target disasters demonstrate that customers really don't like it .
I was very pleased to see that the last few years a certain bank has remained Pride free after an unfortunate year when they promoted it online, including allowing a male activist to write about his views on the GRA. A number of customers complained, pointing out that they didn't want lectures in sexual politics from the bank, especially when they were so anti women.
Result - complete pride silence since then.

Again you show how little you seem to know about anything you comment on. What a fucking joke! A 'five figure' flat refurb could mean ANYTHING really 10K to 99K. And you just ride right in to attempt to discredit a poster.

Do you ever think before you post? Ever?

Do you honestly think that Wickes caters to the SIX figure flat refurb market? Do you Mishy?

Fuck that for a joke. If I had six figures to spend on a flat refurb, I doubt very much I would go to Wickes! And yes, Mishy, I have renovated before, quite a number of times and quite often as an owner builder. I am sure from this post you have no fucking clue about renovating at all.

Helleofabore · 15/06/2023 15:54

“you know you’re being an ally when you’re doing things that make you feel uncomfortable”.

It really is in plain sight isn't it. They say the quiet parts out loud.

No. If you feel uncomfortable about doing something that is supposed to make you an ally, you are ignoring your compass that guides your decisions about which ones are right for you. If your intuition is telling you something isn't right in your eyes, then fucking go and find out more, and work out if there is something about what you are doing that you know is poor safeguarding, or leads people to harm.

You should never just tamp it down because some consultant tells you that this is way to be being a 'good' person.

Don't be so daft. Wickes make their money from people like MrsDanvers and Mr and Mrs knittingaddict.

I'd be very surprised if major builders popped down to Wickes for all their supplies.

Even if they did, it's the general public I see in there on a day to day basis.

Florissante · 15/06/2023 16:03

IME, builders use trade suppliers where they get trade discounts, not local DIY chain stores.
