Taken out of context, apparently 🙄

I'm looking forward to the reply to my complaint now, I can play FWR bingo.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 16/06/2023 17:46

I can't wait for Wickes to tell us what the context is of calling the majority of your customers bigots who aren't welcome in the stores.

IcakethereforeIam · 16/06/2023 18:05

I think it was said in the context of it not being heard outside of the Pink News echo chamber.

HermioneWeasley · 16/06/2023 18:24

I’d love them to explain what context makes it different

Hepwo · 16/06/2023 18:38

Brewers decorating centres are my favourite for painting jobs.

Helleofabore · 16/06/2023 18:41

I expect that this is going to be another ‘sorry not Sorry’ moment. And that people will not forget.

That their senior executive said this and now they are trying to spin that it is taken out of context is remarkable. What part of calling people who disagree with him ‘bigots‘ and saying they are not welcome in store is not in context.

caringcarer · 16/06/2023 18:43

B&Q for me from now on then for all my property supplies purchases.

I thought they were trade only (assuming you aren't)

I've used Wickes a lot - both click & collect and delivery - as they're very competitive pricewise and their customer service is really great. The product reviews are also often really informative. Highly recommended.

You are joking. Wickes online stock checker is notoriously shit, saying things are in stock when they're not leading to many a wasted journey. The quality of their paint etc is awful along with many other issues

Absolutely, massive range and staff who know what they're talking about. Not just for trade either

From insults to gaslighting.

I'm just here to thank Mishy for that piece of glorious tosh at the start of the thread.

I needed that laugh. Next time, google the company and its market before you try to defend it with an off-the-peg put down. Wickes want your personal home-improvement custom if all you're doing is buying £30 of parts. In fact, they previously happily supplied for an in-law's kitchen renovation, and hers was barely into four-figures.

I see,it turns out it was all a terrible misunderstanding.

Imagine that.

PriamFarrl · 16/06/2023 20:23

As an aside I looked at the website of a friend of mine. He owns a very successful business. He is gay as are a few other member of management. Not a rainbow in sight.

MrsJamin · 16/06/2023 20:23

That memo to staff is unbelievable! The doubling down! The support email just for lgbtalphabet people! The "out of context" excuse when we had the whole context available already! That he's just really passionate! They clearly believe that everyone is not entitled to opinions and beliefs that people cannot change sex- Fraser said just that! Time for a rethink, Wickes PR!

Definitely not, and they don't ask many questions if you register online for a trade account before you go.

They have more professional kit in my (not very experienced) opinion.

miri1985 · 16/06/2023 20:28

If its out of context, what is the context that would make what he said acceptable? If its not what he meant then surely it should be on him to do a full throated denial rather than a letter from corporate.

Anyone else thoroughly pissed off at the misuse of the word bigot, a bigot is
"a person who has very strong, unreasonable beliefs or opinions about race, religion or politics and who will not listen to or accept the opinions of anyone who disagrees". A bigot is a person who believes in #nodebate or that a person holding a view should not be listened to or allowed to shop in a hardware store, whereas a lot of people have taken it to mean person whos beliefs I don't like

Hepwo · 16/06/2023 20:29

Silly man. He's not getting a bonus this year is he?

loislovesstewie · 16/06/2023 20:29

Doesn't that make him a bigot then?

JanesLittleGirl · 16/06/2023 20:50

loislovesstewie · 16/06/2023 20:29

Doesn't that make him a bigot then?

You may say that. I couldn't possibly comment.

An excellent article from the spectator - https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/is-this-wickess-gerald-ratner-moment/
This bit is especially interesting:
"I asked Wickes if Longden was speaking for the company with his remarks, and if Wickes considers ‘most of the population’ to be ‘slightly ignorant’ and gender-critical people ‘bigots’. In particular, was the company really saying that customers who disagree with its stance on trans issues were ‘not welcome in our stores’? A spokeswoman told me:

At Wickes we are proud to be an inclusive home improvement employer and support the LGBTQ+ community in its entirety. We are committed to building a workplace and culture where all colleagues can feel at home.’

That seems like a pretty clear answer."

Loud and clear. They absolutely stand by everything he said.

Is this Wickes's Gerald Ratner moment?

Big businesses are increasingly torn between activist leadership and a customer base that just wants to stump up its cash and be on its way. Customers’ patience is wearing thin. The latest company seemingly eager to pick a fight with its clientele is D...

Why didn't they just sack him?

MrsJamin · 16/06/2023 21:08

Because they all feel the same. Because they've convinced themselves that sometimes doing the right thing feels uncomfortable. However I think it's only a matter of time before someone says...

Thanks for the Brewer's tip - there's a branch even closer to me than Wickes.👍

I need to learn how to post stuff from Twitter, a great tweet saying I know your having a tough day, but I have an idea of how you can turn that around, with a photo of Dylan Mulvaney outside a Wickes store
