I looked for an explanation of the new V shape and circle.
im surprised that the V has black and brown stripes which represent ‘people of colour’, but no white stripe.
to me this suggests that the flag is designed by white people..who are graciously including ‘people of colour’ as being allowed in the gang.

apologies for the bad explanation! But isn’t this a bit batshit/ awful?

Here, maybe I’ve got it wrong.

Someone with a good eye for marketing? If there is a minor change each year, then you have to buy a new flag. Simple

IncomingTraffic · 04/06/2023 08:34

Why are they trying to colonise race/ethnicity under the flag (literally a flag!) of LBGTQ and all the many letters?

social justice imperialism is hideous.

VeryUninspired · 04/06/2023 08:35

I’m confused my the inclusion of intersex unless like the rest it’s for intersex lgb people Only?

MagpiePi · 04/06/2023 08:36

I thought ‘intersex’ people didn’t want to be included in all this nonsense.

MagpiePi · 04/06/2023 08:40

I also thought:

Red = Richard
orange = of
Yellow = York
Green = gave
Blue = battle
Indigo = in
Violet = vain

Did they ask people of colour if they wanted to be co-opted by and subsumed within the many letters project?

i bet they didn’t. They just decided to claim them with a bloody flag.

CouldIHaveThatInEnglishPlease · 04/06/2023 08:41

What has being a person of colour got to do with non-heterosexual love?
is pride not about embracing non-heterosexual relationships? Have I got that wrong all these years?

Cashycashy · 04/06/2023 08:41

Why is there a new flag?

MagpiePi · 04/06/2023 08:42

I also thought there was a flag that had a big red umbrella over most of it that was to include sex workers?

ApocalipstickNow · 04/06/2023 08:44

MOMA put some stuff on insta about the Pride flag (I’m using them as a source on this as it was recently posted and easy to find) they state this (see attached screenshot, hopefully).

So if correct, it’s used for its “universality” - which surely includes everyone.

I can see why the gay community has historically see as being a white community with the representation of anyone else ignored. I get why there is a need to address that. And I get why transpeople want representation too, but it’s a simple and memorable image, easy to reproduce and the more it’s adapted the more it will look like Homer Simpson’s web page.

This nails it.

The black and brown stripes were introduced in the Philadelphia "More Colour More Pride" as a result of protests from Black and Latine activists about racism within the local LGBTQ+ community.

Maybe the expansion of letters committee has been watching Eddie Izzard’s ‘we still countries with cunning use of a flag’ and realised they can lay claim to the whole social justice landscape with a flag too.

NutellaEllaElla · 04/06/2023 08:57

Isn't it interesting that the black and brown colours apparently came around in response to racism within the LGBT community (a much easier target), rather than the increased prejudice against gay people in black and brown communities.

The problem is that the insisting that each colour represents one of the elements of many letters community (so we must add a colour for asexual people etc) is that it misses the point that people of all races and ethnicities can be LBG.

And that making superficial changes to a flag is a tokenistic response to issues of racism in the LBG community. Well you have a couple of stripes now, what are you complaining about?

Are they going to stick on a disability stripe/chevron next? After all, I’m sure disability discrimination is also an issue they’d like to pretend to address.

I would put money on that being next year's adaptation.

One day I fear it will have an age stripe ushered in for older people but applied for the younger end

It’ll be neuro diversity first.

Cherryblossoms85 · 04/06/2023 09:27

The old flag was nice. This just seems like victim top trumps.

PurpleBugz · 04/06/2023 09:29

I did a flag discussion not too long ago on here asking what the gender critical LGBTQ flag was/would be.

Someone shared a photo of the flag with the pink blue brown black triangle cut off. I like this idea, accept it will likely be seen as offensive, but I have a right to express my beliefs too.

Trans is not a sexual orientation unless it's autogeniphilia. Even the I would argue it's a fetish not an orientation.

Race is not a sexual orientation

Pride is for LGB.

To me it looks like one of the arrows on WW2 invasion maps.

Each year a new colour will be added to the flag and finally the old horizontal striped flag will be obliterated.

nilsmousehammer · 04/06/2023 10:35

Yes, the march across taking over the rainbow is a bit of a giveaway.

As a grownup homosexual I've just got to the point of thinking flags are horrifically naff and its just yet another way of recreating self in avatar. Like making endless bloody mood boards and then inflicting them on others.
