What actually happened re this on Twitter though?

nolongersurprised · 04/06/2023 00:59

I will watch to the end in case it improves but so far I am not understanding why people think it is so great

I think it’s great because it covers a wide range of issues:

  • sport
  • the general looniness of the gender therapists, as proven by their own interviews
  • social contagion and vulnerable youth
  • the fragility of the “no debate” crew
  • it argues against “other cultures are more fluid in gender presentations” trope
  • the bullying tactics employed to stop people from questioning gender ideology
  • co morbid mental health issues in those transitioning

And yes, every point he’s made has also been made on here and more thoroughly.

But Matt Walsh is an excellent public speaker and debater. These are skills that most people don’t have and ultimately will be more effective than a 14 page thread on MN debating gender ideology. Many people can come up with brilliant replies in writing, after consideration, but most can’t debate and discuss, off the cuff, like MW can.

And no, he’s clearly not a GC, left-wing feminist 🤷‍♀️

Wiccan · 04/06/2023 01:08

I think it was spot on . The absolute pain and suffering this ideology is causing is beyond disgusting. Qualified doctors and specialists believing in this utter crap scares the shit out of me . These people are insane . A women is an Adult Human Female always has been and always will be !

"Similarly, I was disappointed by the way he answered the question ‘What is a woman’ by showing his feminine looking wife cooking, then asking him, as the strong man, to help open a jar."

Yeah that bit really pissed me off!

I worry that to fight against the trans movement for our kids we will end up more people coming out the other side expecting more traditional roles from people men and women. And as always women will suffer

Appalonia · 04/06/2023 07:47

Babylon Bee have just released a fantastic, thought provoking documentary, "What is a Man?" Well worth watching..!

But the answer.to the question given at the end was not "his wife", but "adult human female" (said by his wife). Which is 100% correct. And how can the fact his wife looks like many a typical women looks be a negative for the film?

The thing about the answer to the question is that it is actually really hard to answer off the cuff not because the answer is not agreed, but because it is so obvious and known instinctly by all that (until recently) it barely ever had to be articulated. The star wars man demonstrated that beautifully.

I am not sure about the opening sequences. Whilst I know Matt Walsh supports a traditional family structure and believes (as do I) that there are there are traits that are more typical of one sex than the other, and it may be that he sees no harm in the pink- and blue-ification of children's lives (which I do), but I would be very surprised if he thought that girls and boys should necessarily have a particular personality or traits because of their sex. Rather, it seems to me that the sequence was intended to set up the traditional perception of sex and gender, which then allows him to show how that idea has been warped by transactivists, before then moving on to reality and truth, what that means and how important it is as a foundation to any discussion.

You are right PaleBlueMoonlight, it’s not as though the question wasn’t answered, and he was trying to illustrate a point, with impact, in a short time, and the target audience wouldn’t be FWR Mumsnet anyway.

I was being picky. This film will do a huge amount to either peak people, or give people the courage to speak up who have been silently confused and wondering if they aren’t being duped. How shocking it is, for example, that those doctors speak complete untruths so glibly: that presumably AGP gender surgeon in a mini skirt, and that silky toned castrator! And how shocking that a University professor is a twisty tongued charlatan who cannot and will not discuss the issue.

At the same time I think the woman who is a psychiatrist, while clearly exposing the false premises on which children are routinely being dreadfully harmed, also retained sympathy for those few people who, even when they reach adulthood, can never come out of their distressing state of gender dysphoria.

ScrollingLeaves · 04/06/2023 09:28

Shouldn’t this film be on AIBU somehow, perhaps under a thread relating to aspects of modern American society, ( so it doesn’t stay hidden in ‘gender’)?

NeedToKnow101 · 04/06/2023 09:36

I dreamt I was friends with Elon Musk last night and he was asking my advice about something 😂. Also watched most of What is a woman? It's simply insane the direction 'we' have taken.

DH told me this morning that the Canadian father’s story in Matt Walsh’s film left him really unsettled and uneasy. For anyone who hasn’t watched it, the 13 year old daughter was started on the medicalised route by the State against the father’s wishes after a legal battle and the father was (at the time of filming) awaiting trial for misgendering his daughter under a charge equivalent to beating your child. DH said he had no idea how far it had gone in Canada. I said Canada isn’t alone and explained California’s sanctuary state proposals. It’s really upset him. He says a parent’s job is to stand between their child and harm. He finds the idea that the state can override the parents’ concerns troubling. He was already gender critical but I think Matt Walsh’s documentary finally, decisively peaked him - and we’ve been talking about this issue since 2016.

MrsJamin · 04/06/2023 11:07

I watched the whole thing, of course to those on FWR MN we have been discussing these issues for far too long (over 7years for me😕) I'm glad this was put into a format where people who are meant to have the answers clearly have no answer to the main question, what is a woman. It makes it so much clearer that they don't know what they are talking about, rather than making it the Matt Walsh show.
My heart surged for Scott though, her arm looked horrendous 😢

There was one in AIBU and MN pulled it because they said it was *unlikely to end well" 🙄

The gender studies professor is so exactly a character out of a 90s comedy skit. The hair. The childish repetition of Walsh's questions. Then the blue haired doctor with the "does a chicken commit suicide" bit...

Yeah Matt Walsh is a conservative sexist who looked at the radical feminists' homework and passed it off as his own, but it's a good watch.

I totally agree with you Backstreeets. I’m sure Kelly Jay Keene (#standingforxx) and many like her are understandably furious about brave women who have been campaigning about this FOR YEARS being given no recognition in this film but I am so relieved the message has reached over 150 million people so far

LabradorLady1 · 04/06/2023 11:15

By the way her film Kelly Jay in the USA is brilliant 🙌

Perhaps the gender critical movement needs to work harder to distance itself from the alt right the likes of Walsh, Peterson, Carlson, and Parker before its too late and the trajectory of the movement is bound to the trajectory of the hyper conservative American right.

And when I say 'work harder' I mean 'do anything at all'.

Or maybe the gender critical movement should realise that such a basic question is not political at all and if it has been made political why? Ideology really does make some people stupid.

EdgeOfACoin · 04/06/2023 11:38

And when I say 'work harder' I mean 'do anything at all'.

Like endorsing puberty blockers for children, with all the health problems that result from such unnecessary medication?

Like supporting the removal of functioning, healthy body parts from under-18s and gender confused adults?

Like signing up to and promoting the theories of Alfred C Kinsey who investigated orgasms on children and babies from the age of 5 months old?

Like that, you mean?

EdgeOfACoin · 04/06/2023 11:43

P.S. on the "other side" you have Jordan Peterson saying that you can have masculine girls and feminine boys and that that is completely normal.

I certainly don't agree with everything Peterson says, but he cares a lot more about children with gender dysphoria than most people who claim to speak for them, that's for sure.

??

I think we know why it's been made "political". Because of trans-activism and the claim that TWAW. So it's tied up with people demanding political rights.

And he's incandescent about the men cheating women out of places / sponsorship etc in women's sport.Such a shame that caring about safeguarding children, the erosion of women's sport and women's rights is not being challenged by those purporting to be "on the left" 🙄Still, when people show you who they really are and all that.....
