He starts off with a loads of sexist bullshit his son only needing a BB gun for emotional support

I got this far and realised that unless it was a joke it is actually a pile of sexist and misogynist bullshit.

This sure is getting a lot of sunlight. DH and I watched it last night, now it's trending across the world with 145m tweets.

Sure it wasn't an in depth feminist exploration but let's not criticise it for not being pure enough. It brings the basics to the masses and those who are interested can look into it further

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/06/2023 10:43

Agree, Nutella.

ZiriForEver · 03/06/2023 11:11

The movie isn't a feminist take on the topic, it is a general (center) parent's point of view.

Just the subject is so wrong it can be taken apart from different sides.

Mrs Walsh needs to try levering a spoon under the rim of the jar to break the vacuum. I hope Matt has other redeeming qualities when she masters that skill.

Or you can just give the lid a firm tap against a countertop. Seal breaks, jar opens easily. When I was married I was chief jar opener because I always tapped it just right to break the seal. I remember chatting on the phone with my mum once, when XH asked me to open a jar he was struggling with. My mum couldn't stop laughing when she overheard.

Ooh, going to give this a try, I've always used the hot water method and while it works this seems a lot more brisk and elegant.

Cross referencing the Matthew Parris thread. I think men do need to take an interest in the issue. If they need a regular-guy type character to take them along, then so be it.

Louis Theroux has made numerous documentaries about crackpot yanks. Why won't he and the BBC explore this topic? So much for BBC impartiality.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/06/2023 12:00

That way makes me nervous Grin

Louis Theroux made a documentary about so-called 'trans kids' back in 2015.

Louis Theroux Specials - Transgender Kids

Louis meets pioneering medical professionals who help children with gender dysphoria.

I watched a hooky upload of this when it first came out and ‘Can a Chicken Cry?’ ‘Can a Chicken have a Gender Identity’ has become part of my family’s everyday lexicon.

I doubt my family would fit in at Matt’s kids’ pink and blue gender stereotype party but nonetheless, I am delighted that the Blue-Haired-Gender-Chicken-Lady scene exists.

I am wading through the documentary.

It is striking how many people will not say what is a woman without resorting to the circular a woman is a woman if they say they are.

AmbleInAnnBoleyn · 03/06/2023 17:15

Trigger warning: about 45 minutes, a snippet of a goat being butchered, you might find it upsetting but it is very brief.

Yes it starts with that joke, and ends with another one from his wife asking him to open a jar. They are just laughing at the right wing cliches.

He should have asked her if her arguments are always so poultry.

It's okay, I'm currently identifying as a coat.

Bump.

Leafstamp · 03/06/2023 18:04

Bumping in the hope just one person who wants to know more sees it in active convos.

Thanks for the link, brilliant documentary, so pleased I've finally seen it.

FullOfBiscuit · 03/06/2023 19:45

I’m pretty new to all this stuff but I saw it earlier and cannot believe so many professionals cannot define what a woman is and are pushing this shit onto our kids. It seems to be everywhere at the moment, why is that?

The uni professor came across as an absolute idiot, ‘a woman is anyone who identifies as a woman’, yes but what does the word WOMAN mean? What is this thing they want to identify as? He had no answer, he couldn’t define what a woman was without using the word woman, wth? As for the women on the women’s march, what is wrong with them? 😡

I didn’t mind the jar bit at the end, meh I often get my DH or teen DSs to open a jar for me.

booksandbrooks · 03/06/2023 21:41

It was peculiar to see someone struggle with the idea that you can't define a word using that word.

Imagine taking on loads of debt to be taught by him?

It’s been flying under the radar for years, and those who tried to speak up were often howled down for being bigots, transphobes and fascists. So this ideology has had plenty of time to take root, together with lots of institutions such as charities and schools buying into it in the name of being kind and inclusive and certain other organisations putting a lot of effort into propagating the ideology (e.g. the Denton’s Playbook). But it’s reached a point where it doesn’t lurk in the shadows any more; there’s men in women’s sporting categories, detransitioners highlighting what’s been done to them, and women finally - after the Maya Forstater ruling which stated that gender critical views are protected under the Equality Act - being able to speak out. There is sunlight pouring into what’s gone on, the media are picking it up and it’s bloody brilliant.

BettyFilous · 03/06/2023 23:01

Currently at 2.1m views. Just watched again with DH. He enjoyed it, said the therapist at the beginning was terrifying. We loved the gender studies professor - you couldn’t parody that vacuous waffle any better.

There is a clip of Ibram X Kendi at atalk being asked to define racism, he basically says, it's things that lead to a racist outcome - this guy is an academic.

It seems like this is a problem in what sometimes get called grievance studies areas. I have started to think it's something to do with the methodology.

ScrollingLeaves · 03/06/2023 23:35

I think it shows how entrenched gender ideology in the US and Canada is, to the extent that it is socially unacceptable to question it at all to a far greater extent than is true here. It also shows that children there really are in danger.

Like another poster, I too didn’t like the beginning showing the girl in pink and the boy in blue with a gun. I thought at first he was going to use those images to mock the stereotypes but he did not comment that this was not at all necessarily typical of boys and girls. To be fair, though, he later let Jordan Petersen say there can be feminine boys and masculine girls without that meaning you need to cut them up.

Similarly, I was disappointed by the way he answered the question ‘What is a woman’ by showing his feminine looking wife cooking, then asking him, as the strong man, to help open a jar.

The Masai by contrast came out well with their answer, even though they are not chickens and they do have feelings. This begged the question what is going on with us?

I didn’t know before about children identifying as animals in school and having to be accepted according to their identities.
