Women's rights general conversations - Thread 5

Continuation of Thread 4.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Justice never eats.

Boiledbeetle · 03/07/2023 17:32

I'm awaiting the responses to my latest post. Should be interesting!

funnelfan · 03/07/2023 18:01

That thread will be full soon anyway.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 03/07/2023 18:12

roll on the hour.

TRAs; This awful thing happened

GCs: Yes, it does sound awful, where was it?

TRAs: Another awful thing happened

GCs: Shocking, show us where?

TRAs: GCs are all massively right wing, thrown off the telegraph forum for being too extreme, they have a constant thread in FWR that they renew when in gets to 1000 posts

GCs: Gosh, amazing, we never saw them, what is their thread called?

TRAs: Look! a racist squirrel!

Boiledbeetle · 03/07/2023 18:16

That about sums up the entire thread😂

MavisMcMinty · 03/07/2023 18:23

Ha ha! Excellent précis.

MouseMinge · 03/07/2023 21:19

Are we the racist thread? Good grief that's desperate!

The breastfeeding article was interesting and I went to the link as well. Whenever I see or hear about men breastfeeding I always imagine that their "milk" is coloured water which is better than imagining pus which is what my brain automatically wants to do. The linked article makes it clear that in the experiment, which was lacking in so many details, that the breastfeeding man wasn't producing sufficient milk at any point and yet kept the experiment going, pretending that 6oz was the same as the required 8oz. It's shocking and has absolutely nothing to do with the needs of the child and everything to do with pandering to male desires, either just plain narcissistic or totally ag. It makes me so sad that we've come to this.

MouseMinge · 03/07/2023 21:21

I was reading Telegraph articles for a while. It started because I just wanted to get an idea of what the right wing were thinking, then they were at least discussing GC views. I stopped for no other reason than cost. I read fewer and fewer Guardian articles and if they ever start charging for them I'll read precisely none.

who knows considering last the Disney one no thread links are forthcoming!

But so far today the only racist post I've had to report was actually on the thread scolding the whole of FWR. Go figure!

MavisMcMinty · 03/07/2023 21:25

“You do seem to spend your time hanging out with a load of white middle class Tories and assume that they're typical of the wider population..”

Someone posted that at me today on the, er, Telegraph talkboard we are too right-wing for. Could… could… could you all be white middle class Tories and I never knew it?

On the pus issue i always have a image of the lung cancer advert where they squeezed the cigarette and it turns into an lung tube thingy with loads of crap oozing out.

Boiledbeetle · 03/07/2023 21:29

@MavisMcMinty Sorry to disappoint I for one am not middle class. Fairly sure i can't be a Tory if Im a member of the Labour party either! On

(And why yes the photo of my labour membership card is a handy excuse to remind you to buy a book of poems or to write a poem!)

Dang, I need new Tory friends to replace the ones I lost over Brexit and Boris Johnson.

I once slept with a Tory if that counts.

To be fair i also accidentally slept with a member of the national front but I had consumed much alcohol and didn't discover the tattoos until after the event.

MouseMinge · 03/07/2023 21:45

I'm working class or possibly, given benefits, the residuum which is what the Victorians used to call the "feckless" poor. Unfortunately for those who would like to define me that way, I'm highly educated and probably more intelligent than them, so ah, think on thick poshos!

It amuses me, and I'm sure we've spoken about this before, that they think we're right-wing and they are all lovely progressive left-wingers when there is nothing more right-wing than the individualism of the whole gender identity movement.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 03/07/2023 21:48

They’ve got bored on that thread & wondered over here to do some more scolding

I had noticed that as well. But I'm 50 years old i will not be scolded like a naughty 5 year old!

funnelfan · 03/07/2023 21:52

I generally share Aneurin Bevan's opinion of Tories, especially the bunch that make up the current government, but I found in real life I can actually get on quite well with conservatives (small c). It's usually possible to have a sensible conversation and agree to disagree. Generally the Shire types who are motivated by doing their duty and "the right thing", who I can credit for having a good instinct and contributing to the community, even while privately finding their approach a bit patriarchal and patronising. I think there are still some back-bench MPs who could fall into this category, but alas they lost control of their party a long time ago.

May I offer my appreciation for @Ereshkigalangcleg for putting in the night shift and filling up the thread in Site Stuff. Hopefully that’s the end of that for now.

Merry Go Round Dog GIF

I've just caught up with the last page of comments. Until the next merry go round let's enjoy a gif.

Boiledbeetle · 04/07/2023 02:44

And why didn't they just state the posts they had an issue with On the first page of comments and not after 900.

funnelfan · 04/07/2023 02:57

Because if it really was about those comments they’d either have reported them, or addressed them in the thread itself and that thread would have been redundant.

Shame really, I am genuinely interested in topics like unconscious bias. A good faith discussion can be very illuminating. Eg I’ve stopped using the word “paddy” to describe a tantrum after some Irish posters on MN explained how offensive it was to them. I had no idea up to then as it was a very commonly used word when I was growing up. It’s one person and one word but surely a better world is built by each one of us doing what we can to be better?

and on that philosophical note, time to take this insomnia in hand…
