Women's rights general conversations - Thread 5

Continuation of Thread 4.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

I'm boggling slightly here... you mean if I am raped I'm not allowed to be upset about it or insist that the perpetrator is arrested?

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 27/06/2023 12:22

Now now girls, don't bleed on the nice carpets.

IcakethereforeIam · 27/06/2023 12:41

That article is very thorough, blows a hole in some of the claims made by Oxfam in the standard response they've been making to the recent complaints.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 27/06/2023 12:46

I find this revival of the nastiest attitudes from the past very discouraging. I remember my shock ca 1979 hearing a (late middle aged) woman advise a teenager 'remember, whatever happens, it's always the girl's fault'. That was re inappropriate sexual behavior up to and including assault.

I had hoped we'd moved into a better world.

btw, the woman was a Church of Ireland clergy widow - I never heard any nun say anything so misogynist, despite their negative reputation, and our (lay) religion teacher at convent school gave us a few talks about recognising and avoiding abuse, and getting ourselves out of bad situations, that would still be helpful today.

Interesting - maybe she was giving the same warning as Maryam’s mother in 1000 Splendid Suns?

I see that Denise Fahmy has won her case against Arts Council England. Great news!

My sprog was watching YouTube and an ad break came on to promote Queer families, some sort of Queer..?..org. bunch of talking heads I wouldn't trust a dog to!

Thought this was an interesting Twitter thread - non binary in particular is just getting eye rolls from teenagers now. It's a fad which is dying out -

twitter.com/3ScotchEggs/status/1673422434492379155?s=20

I did like the 'don't be such a they/them' comment.

MavisMcMinty · 27/06/2023 14:56

Ha ha, yes!

Exactly. They even use “they/them” as an insult, even if it’s nothing to do with gender.

eg

“Me and the girls are going to a party on Saturday at Jade’s house. You coming?”

”Actually I think I’ll leave this one”

“Oh come on, don’t be such a they/them, get to the party!”

DEFINITELY nicking that one!

Tricyrtis2022 · 27/06/2023 16:50

That thread is so heartening! I saw what looked like the beginning of the end earlier this year but it's getting under way properly now. Such a relief, I hope this continues.

duc748 · 27/06/2023 16:56

It is heartening, Tric, but I worry about the institutions, quangos, charities, political parties...

Tricyrtis2022 · 27/06/2023 17:06

Agreed, duc, that ugly tangle is going to take a while to sort out, but it will have to be done.

Thanks for linking, a really uplifting read, good to know the kids aren't having any of this nonsense. I thought this comment about teaching was interesting too:

My youngest son & his friends laugh about gender bs. They’re fast running out of tolerance for “pronouners”. They all laughed at their teacher in sex ed when she told them “sex is a spectrum” & there’s “many genders”. She apologised & told them she HAD to teach it!

@IcakethereforeIam you got the last post! So I'll have to say it here... do not type "just one cornetto" into the gif box! You do not get the wholesome image i have attached. I'm shocked at the depravity of mnhq at times. Truly shocked!

ScrollingLeaves · 27/06/2023 21:13

“Oh come on, don’t be such a they/them, get to the party!”

That is brilliant.

Waitwhat23 · 27/06/2023 21:16

I can't unsee the banana one.

MY EYES!

ScrollingLeaves · 27/06/2023 21:17

Thank goodness for that. She was horribly treated.

ScrollingLeaves · 27/06/2023 21:19

Wrong thread. I meant the victory against Arts Counil thread.

She deserved to win. I can't believe things have got so bad that the other staff felt it OK to say and write what they did!

I notice no one is brave enough to post the banana nutella gif.

Cake... Who knows!

Waitwhat23 · 27/06/2023 21:24

Oh man, I love Nutella!
